My invention will be best understood by explanation of the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a portion of a portable engine, showing the application of my improved attachment thereto, said attachment hanging pendent from the axle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the attachment swung up in working position, and Fig. 8 a front view of the attachment in the position shown in Fig. 2.

A represents the furnace end of a portable engine, and D the rear'axle thereof.
The draft attachment consists of angular bars F F, composing a yoke or frame, which is hung upon a collar upon the axle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to be capable of being swung up in front of the furnace, or allowed to hang pendent below the furnace and out of the way, as shown in Fig. 1. In a guide, H, at the middle of the outer portion of this frame, is mounted a draw-bar, G, in such manner as to have a. considerable back-and-forth movement in said guides. To the inner end of the draw-bar G two sets of levers, I I, are articulated, the opposite ends of said levers be ing in turn articulated to shorter; levers or links J J, which are jointed to opposite sides of the frame at 3 j.
K K are holders or sockets secured to 0p posite sides of the frame, between the bars thereof, and each containing a stout spiral spring, L, through which and through the, holders also extend rods or bars M M, that are connected at their outer ends to levers I I, and at their opposite ends are provided with nuts N N, which bear, through interposed washers O 0, upon the inner ends of the springs, all as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The described construction and arrangement of devices is such that when the draft is applied to the draw-bar the latter will slide forward in its guide and gradually transfer the strain to the frame, through the instrumentality of the levers I I J J, rods M M, and springs O 0, thus preventing shock to the machine and-obviating breakage of parts. By thus applying the draft indirectly through the several described instrumentalities, the strain is exerted much more gradually than were the draw-bar to act directly upon the frame, or even through a spring interposed between its inner end and the frame. When the frameis swung up horizontally inthe position occupied by it when the draft is applied, it extends out in front of the furnace and constitutes a sort of platform. \Vhen, however, it is not in use, it can beswung down and under the furnace, leaving the whole front of the furnace unobstructed and the openings to the fire and to the ash-pit readily accessible.
The invention is applicable to portable engines and other like machines.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new- 1. A draft attachment for portable engines and other machines, consisting, essentially, of a frame or yoke carrying a draw-bar at its outer middle portion, and hung upon the axle of the machine, so as to be swung out horizontally in front of the furnace, or allowed to hang beneaththefurnaceoutofthe way,substantially as described.
2. The comb nation of the draft-frame with the draw-bar, the levers connected to said draw-bar, the short levers or links to which the first-mentioned lovers are connected, the springs and their holders, and the rods connected to the springs and-to the levers, as described, for the purpose specified.
3. The frame or yoke hung upon the axle so as to swing thereon, as described, in combination with the sliding draw-bar, the long and short levers, the spring -holders and their springs, and the connecting-rods, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
