Description

June 16, 1959 e. c. RAINWATER, JR 2,890,507
POCKET WRITING INSTRUMENT HOLDER Filed Sept. l7, 1956 Fig.5"

United States Patent POCKET WRITING EISTRUMENT HOLDER Grover 'C. Rainwater, Jrn, Amarillo, Tex.
Application September 17, 1956, Serial No. 610,230
2 'Claims. (Cl. 24-3) The present invention relates generally to new and useful improvements in pocket inserts and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for preventing the loss of pocket pens and pencils.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a holder of the character described which may be readily inserted in the usual pocket, which will be concealed from view when inserted and which, further, includes novel anchoring or securing means.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a pocket writing instrument holder of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a holder embodying the present invention in use in a pocket, a portion of the pocket being broken away;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the holder per se;
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4- is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a horizontally elongated plate 5 of suitable material, preferably a plastic. The plate 5, which may be of any desired dimensions, includes a longitudinally ribbed outer or front face 6. Depending from one end portion of the plate 5 is an integral leg 7 comprising a gripping outer edge 8.
Aflixed in any suitable manner to the other end of the plate 5 and depending therefrom is a substantially U- shaped leg 9 of suitable resilient wire. It will be noted that one end portion only of the U-shaped leg 9 is afiixed to the plate 5. The other or free end portion 10 of the leg 9 is provided with a cover 11 of rubber or other suitable gripping material.
It is thought that the use of the device will be readily 2,890,507 Patented June 16, 1959 apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the holder is slipped downwardly in an obvious manner in the usual pocket 12 of a garment 13. The dimensions of the device are such that when it is thus inserted in the pocket the substantially U-shaped resilient leg 9 is compressed and tensioned. In this manner the holder is frictionally anchored in the pocket. The writing instnument, such as a fountain pen 14, for instance, is then inserted downwardly in the pocket 12 behind the plate 5 and the usual clip 15 of said pen is engaged over the plate 5 with the ribbed front face 6 thereof for securing the pen thereon. Of course, the holder may be readily removed from the pocket to permit the garment to be laundered or for other purposes by simply compressing the substantially U-shaped leg 9. The legs 7 and 9 support the plate 5 at the desired elevation in the pocket. Of course, the plate 5 may be attractively colored. Also, the plate 5 may carry any desired advertising or other matter.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A pocket writing instrument holder of the character described comprising: a horizontally elongated plate insertable in a pocket, said plate including a longitudinally ribbed face, a supporting leg depending from one side portion of the plate and engageable with the corresponding side wall of the pocket, and a substantially U-shaped resilient leg depending from the other side portion of the plate and engageable under tension with the other side wall of the pocket for securing said plate in position therein.
2. A pocket writing instrument holder of the character described comprising: a horizontally elongated, longitudinally ribbed plate insertable in a pocket, a supporting leg depending from one side portion of the plate and including a non-slipping edge engageable with the corresponding side wall of the pocket, and a substantially U-shaped resilient leg mounted on the other side portion of the plate and having one end portion affixed vertically thereto, the other end portion of the second named leg being engageable under tension with the corresponding side wall of the pocket for securing said plate in position therein.
