Description
June 9, 1959 K. T. BUTTERY DxsPENsING AR'roN Filed June 30, 1958 United States Patent DISPENSING CARTON Kenneth T. Buttery, Kalamazoo, Mich., 'assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazo'o, Mich.
Application June 30, 1958, Serial No. 745,457
8 Claims. (Cl. 229-17) This invention relates to a carton of the dispensing type which may be quickly opened and permits removal of packaged contents by grasping as distinguish'ed from bulk contents pouring therefrom although usable for packaging material in bulk form.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a carton which is particularly adapted for use in the packaging units of packaged material, for example, such as butter, laId, oleomargarine or the like and permits the ready removal therefrom.
Second, to provide a carton having these 'advantages which may be repeatedly opened and reclosed and when reclosed efectively houses 'and retains the contents.
Third, to provide a carton having these several advantages which is relatively simple and economical in structure.
Further objects relating to details and economies of the invention Will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is 'a perspective view of a closed carton embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in Vertical section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is 'a fragmentary rear perspective view.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view with the carton open for removal of the contents.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view partially in Vertical section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Pig. 6 is 'a fragmentary view corresponding to that of Fig. 2 illustrating parts in reclosed position.
Pig. 7 is a plan view of the blank in extended form.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated is especially designed to receive pachaged products such as` conventionally illustrated at 1 in Fig. 4, for example, butter, lard, oleomargarine and the like.
The carton is properly proportioned to receive a desired quantity of the packaged material and comprises front Wall 2, rear wall 3 and side walls 4 and 5.
In this embodiment the sealing fiap 6 is dimensioned to substantially correspond to the dimensions of the side wall 5 and is disposed upon the inner side thereof and fixedly secured thereto to stifien the carton for grasping. The front walls 2, rear walls 3 and side walls 4 and 5 are provided with bottom closure members 7, 8, 9 and 1G respectively and the sealing fiap is also provided With a bottom member 11.
When the carton is erected these parts are arranged in proper lapping relation and secured together, as by adhesive.
The front wall 2 is provided with lan inner top member 12, while the rear wall 3 is provided with an outer top member 13. The side wall 5 has 'an 'inner top member 14 'while the sealing fiap 6 has an inner top member 15. The side member 4 is provided with a top fiap 16. These several parts are connected by hinging scores 17. As this is common practice in cartons the severalv scores are notspecifically described or design'ated.
ICC
The end edge 18 of` the inner top member 12 terminates in spaced relation to the side Wall 4 having the top fiap 16. When the carton 'is erectedz the outer top member 13 is disposed in overlapping relation to the top member 12 and secured thereto, commonly by adhesive. The top members 14 and 15 are disposed on the inner side of these top members- 12 and 13.
The outer top member 13 has a severing score or fracturing. score 19 disposed in alignment or in substantial alignment with the edge 18 of the inner top member 12. This severing score 19 extends a substantial distanceinto the rear wall, the extension being designated 20, see Figs. 3 and 7. The hinging. score 21 extends from the bottom of this Severin-g score to the adjacent connection for the rear wall to the side Wall 4-, the connection between these walls above the hinging score being weakened to facilitate fracturing along the line 30. This provides a severable portion 22 which, when severed, provides an opening for the removal of contents and a closure for the opening, as is clearly illustrated.
The partially severable portion 23 of the rear wall provides a finger opening facilitati'ng the grasping of material 'as 1 in the carton and to further such grasping the front Wall has a notch like recess 24 opposed to the opening or recess in the rear Wall.
The top or closure member 22 is provided with a combined seal and tucking fiap 25 which is hinged to its. swinging edge at 26 and adapted yto be positioned in overlapping relation to the front wall as illustrated in Fig. 1, and secured thereto, desirably by adhesive indicated at 27 (Fig. 2) or when released may be tucked into the carton between the front wall and the top flap 16, see Fig. 6.
The sealing and tucking fiap 25 is desirably provided With a finger tab 28 which facilitates grasping to release the fi'ap 25 from its sealed engagement with the front wall. The carton is reclosed after having been opened the removable closure parts are unchanged in unclosed position so that the reclosed carton may be handled without the likelihood of accidental opening and dischar-ging the contents. V
The particular carton illustrated is proportioned for packaged products of a w'idely known type and it Will be understood that the terms fron "rear and side walls are used as a matter of convenience and not in relation to size or to adaptation to any particular product.
I have illustrated my invention in a highly practical commercial embodiment. It is believed that this disclosure wil'l enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the invention as may be desired.
