ACE YARNALL, OF VILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
BINDING-ROLLER FOR GANG-SAW MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,910, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed June 2, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Acn YARXALL, of Williamsport, in the county ofLycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Binding-Rollers for GangSaw Mills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The invention involved in the subject-matter of this application relates to an improvement in binding-rollers for gang-saw mills, and has for its purpose to provide such mills with rollers that shall at all times be self-adjusting, to thereby accommodate themselves to the various thicknesses of stocks passing under them to the action of the saws.
It is the purpose, further, of this invention to compel the rollers, in adjusting themselves to the thicknesses of the stocks, to tightly bind thesame, without the aid of any power other than that attached to the weight of said rollers, and, further, to provide rollers whose arrangement in the mill shall economize both in the number of parts employed and in the cost of the same.
To the accomplishment of the above the invention consists of a pair of rollers mounted upon a shaft eccentrically journaled in a frame adapted to vertical movement when the stocks are passed under the rollers; and it further consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts employed in thus mounting the shaft and rollers, all as more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
For the better understanding of the invention, and to enable those skilled in its relative art to know how to construct and use the same, reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device with the binding-rollers removed, and illustrating in dotted lines the position of the rollersupporting frame when the logs or stocks are introduced, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section through the shaft, binding-rollers, and frame supporting the same.
Like letters of reference denote correspond ingpart-s in both figures.
The main frame-work of this device consists, preferably, of four uprights, A, joined lengthwise at their upper and lower ends by crossbeams A and transversely by beams A. In the lower cross-beams A are transversely mounted the feed-rollers B B, one at the feed 4 end of the'machine and the other at the discharge end thereof.
The frame carrying the binding-rollers consists, preferably, of two uprights, O 0, arranged upon the main frame-work at points diametrically opposite, and connected together by means of a transverse beam, D. The ends of these uprights, which are tenoned, each have vertical bearing in a rectangular slot, a, centrally located in each of the upper and lower cross-beams, A. The inner terminus of each tenon forms a seat, as shown, to limit the movement of this roller-carrying frame when the logs or stocks a1 e passed under the rollers, In each of the uprights O C, and at points diametrically opposite and beneath the beam D, connecting said uprights, is firmly em bedded a cylindrical casing, E, in which loosely fits a disk, F, of the same axial diameter as said casings. In these disks are eccentrically and rigidly fixed the onterrends of a shaft, G, the inner ends of which are likewise fixed in a disk, H, vas shown in Fig. 2, corresponding in every respect with those to which the outer ends of said shaft are affixed. Upon this shaft G, and between the center and outer disks, are centrally mounted the binding-rollers I I, whose weight should be as heavy as the strength of the shaft will permit. In in troducing to the action of the saws two stocks of different thicknesses, the upward pressure upon the rollers compels the same to rise and simultaneously and automatically adjust themselves with an even pressure upon their respect ive stocks. Should circumstances need to feed two stocks of an equal thickness, the two rollers will readily adjust themselves and bear with an even pressure thereon. These rol1- ers maintain a steady bind, and are at all times sufficiently near the saws to resist any liftingpower that might ensue by the contact of the saw-teeth with the stocks.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that by the arrangement of these binding-rollers it will be impossible for any vibration to occur,
either at the front or rear end of the frame, and that if more weight is desired or requisite any suitable means will prove effective by attaching the same to the side of each of the up rights carrying the binding-rollers. I am aware of the existence of Patent No. 250,928, of December 18, 1881, and therefore disclaim anything therein described or shown, but
VVhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pair of bindingrollers mounted upon a shaft eccentrically journaled at each end in a circular disk, having loose bearings within a cylindrical casing embedded in a frame adapted to automatically rise upon introduction of the logs to the rollers, and to likewise fall when they are discharged therefrom substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a machine of the character described,
. the frame for carrying the bindingrollers,
consisting of two connected uprights arranged at points diametrically opposite upon the main frame, and provided each with tenoned ends, which have vertical and loose bearings 2 5 in rectangular slots located one in a crossbeam above each of said uprights, and in a cross-beam under the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination, with the two uprights O 0, arranged at points diametrically opposite upon the main frame, and having loose end bearings in slots in said frame, of the bindingrollers I I, mounted upon shaft G, eccentri- 5 cally journaled at its centerin the disk H, and likewise journaled at its outer ends in the disks F F, the latter having loose bearings in two cylindrical casings, E E, embedded in the uprights O C, at points diametrically opposite, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
ACE YARNAIJL.
