Description

I (No Model.)
A.. WEST.
ROUNDABUT. No. 288,898. Patente Nov. 20, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT Ormeaj ANDREV VVES'I,l OF BIRMINGHAM, IOVA.
ROUNDABOUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,898, dated November 20, 1883,
\ Application filed September 4, 1883. (No mmlchl To all whom t mfaly concern,.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW WEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Van Buren and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Itoundabouts, of which the following is a speciiieation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
rllhis invention relates to an improved roundabout or merry-go-round; and it has for its objects to provide for more conveniently operating and controlling the same, as more fully hereinafter speciiied.
These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my invention; and Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional view taken on the line fc m of Fig. l, and showing aportion of my improved device.
The letter A indicates a platform, which Jis mounted upon standards B, or otherwise supported. The said platform is provided with a circular opening at the center, in which is adapted to rotate a circular stage, C.
The letter D indicates a collar forming part of a disk, E,which is secured to the lower side of the circular stage, and which is arranged to rotate on a shouldered sleeve, F, secured to the upper end of a vertical shaft, G, which is supported in a suitable base, H, below. The said shaft, near its lower end, is also provided with a similar sleeve, I, upon which is tted a rotating collar, K, which is provided with a pulley, L, having a horizontal rim, M, and to which are secured the lower ends .of the braces N, the upper ends of which are secured to the circular stage before mentioned, in order to firmly support it.
The letter P indicates a vertical shaft journaled in suitable bearings in the platform and base of the machine, and provided with a pnlley, It, from which extends a band to the pulley L, to impart motion to the circular stage. The said shaft P is also provided with a driving-pulley, S, by means of which the apparatos may be put in motion by a band connected to the driving-wheel of a suitable motor.
The letter T indicates a recess in the platform, near one side, and U a vertical brakeshaft suit-ably journaled in the platform, and having a shoe at its lower end located in said recess. The said shaft is provided with a vwheel or lever, W. The circular stage is provided with seats X, and the surrounding plat,- form with guard-railsY, having suitable openings for ingress and egress to and from the circular stage. The platform is surrounded by a suitable wall, Z, having an opening for ingress and egress.
The operation of my invention will be understood from the above description without further explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, in a roundabout or merrygo-ronnd, of the stationary platform, the circular rotating stage mounted upon a vertical shaft, as described, the driving mechanism,
'the brake-shaft, and shoe, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW WEST.
