NITED STATES PATENT Orrica JOHN G. THOMAS, OF LITTLE FALLS, NEW YORK.
CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,890, dated November 1E83.
Application filed September 13, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may cancer-n:
Be it known that I, J onN G. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Falls, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cellars for Engine or Car Trucks and I. do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in an oil-cellar for engine or car trucks; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a sectional side view of the lower part of an oil-cellar for trucks, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4: is a transverse section. Fig. 5
- is a sectional side view of the lower part of an oil-cellar for an engine-truck, illustrating a modified form of my invention. Fig. 6 is a top view of the same, partly broken away. Fig. 7 is a transverse section of the same.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in the several views.
The letter A indicates a receptacle or cellar designed to hold the tow or cotton waste that is supplied withv oil for lubricating the axle-journals.
The ends of the receptacle A are concaved, as shown at c, for the reception of the. axle journal, and on each side of the box or receptacle A, extending from end to end, are arranged the concavedor inclined wings or projections b I), that overhang the space occupied by the cotton waste and prevent it from winding around the journal.
The lower part of the receptacle A may be provided, if desired, with a horizontal parti tion or false bottom, B, as shown in Figs. 5' and 7, said partition being formed with a longitudinal slot, 0, through which the oil that is admitted beneath the partition or false bottom can pass into and saturate the cotton waste lying above said partition. The lubrieating-oil is passbd into the receptacle through a pipe, 0, that enters the side, end, or bottom of the same, the inner end of the pipe being open.
lVhen the slotted partition or false bottom B is employed, 'the pipe G will only enter the receptacle or cellar a short distance, and a guard, D, Figs. 5, G, and 7, will be arranged above the slot 0, to prevent the cotton waste from working down into the slot and obstructing the passage of oil.
Instead of forming the receptacle A with a slotted false bottom, however, I prefer to dispense with said false bottom or partition and extend the pipe G into the receptacle for nearly its entire length, thus obtaining increased space for cotton waste without enlarging the receptacle. The pipe 0, when thus extended into the receptacle, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, is provided with a longitudinal slot, d, for
affording free access of oil to the cotton waste,
the slot (2 being preferably arranged in the lower side of the pipe, so as to prevent it from becoming closed by said cotton waste.
To the outer end of the oil-pipe C is connected a pipe, E, having a suitable bend or connection at its lower end, and extending upward a sufficient distance to form a reservoir for oil. This pipe E may be provided, if desired, with a cock for controlling the flow of oil.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the receptacle A, having concaved ends a a and internal wings or projections, 12 b, of the pipes O E, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the receptacle A, of the slotted oil-pipe G, substantially as de= scribed.
3. The combination, with the receptacle A, having slotted partition or false bottom B, of the oil-pipe C- and guard D, substantially as described.
4;. The combination, with the receptacle A, of the slotted pipe 0, arranged therein, andthe pipe E, connected to the outer end of said slotted pipe, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN G. THOMAS. Witnesses:
WA'rrs T. Looms, J. W. FITZGERALD.
