JOSEPH MEIER, OF PLAINFIELD, lSlEi'T JERSEY.
SPARK-ARREsTl-:a
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,832, dated November 20, 1883, Application filed March 8, 1883. (No model.)
To a/Z whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH METER, ofPlainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved vSpark-Arrester, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide new and improved devices for lpreventing sparks and cinders from being ejected out of a locomotive smokestaek.
The invention consists in a smoke-stack constructed with two concentric tubes and two screens, and with apertures in the inner tube, above and below the lower screen, and with an annular partition directly below the apertures below the lower screen and within the space between the two tubes, whereby the sparks will be arrested and will drop down through the middle tube into the smoke-box again.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in `all the figures.
Figure l is aiongitudinalsectional elevation of the upper part of a locomotive smokestack provided with my improved spark-arrester. Fig. 2 is an inverted sectional plan view of the same on the line fr x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an inverted sectional plan view of the same on the line y y, Fig. l.
The smoke-stack is constructed with two concentric tubes, A B, between which an annular space, C, is formed.4 A short distance from the upper end ofthe inner tube, B, a convex screen, D, is secured in the same, which screen is preferablyr provided with a series of short parallel slots. The tube B is provided with two series of openings, E and F, directly below and above the edge, respectively, ofthe screen D.
On the upper end of the inner tube, B, a convex screen, G, is secured, which is preferably provided with a series of parallel slots, which, however, are to be at right angles to the slots of the screen D. The edges of the screen G are extended to the outer tube, A. An annular partition, H, is arranged in the space between the two tubes A B, and below the apertures E, which partition is inclined downward from the outer to the inner tube.
If desired, the smoke-stack can be provided with a hood, J, as shown.
The sparks and cinders carried upward in the pipe B, which is connected with the line from the smoke-box, strike against the screen D and Iare thrown down, the smoke rising through the slots or aperturesof the screen D, and some passing through the apertures E into the chamber or space O, and, with the other smoke, through the slots or apertures of the screen G into the hood, and then off. If any sparks or cinders pass through the screen D, they strike against the bottom of the screen G and are thrown down upon the screen D and slide down the saine and through the apertures F into the chamber C, and upon the partition H, down which they slide, and thenpass through the apertures H into the tube B and drop to the bottom of the same. The cinders are thus prevented from accumlating in the space O. The screensD G can be made straight, but are preferably made convex or conical, as a larger surface is obtained, and the sparks and cinders slide off much more readily.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a smoke-stack, the combination, with the concentric tubes A B, of the screen D in the inner tube, B, and the screen G onthe upper end of the inner tube, B, and covering the annular space between the two tubes, substantiallyas herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
. 2. In a smoke-stack, the combination, with the outer tube, A, of the inner tube, B, and the screen D, the tube B having an annular row of apertures, E F, below and above the said screen, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a smoke-stack, the combination, with the outer tube, A, of the inner tube, B, and the screens D and G, the tuheB beingprovided with annular rows of apertures E and F below and above the screen D, and of the annular partition H and space O between the tubes A B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH MEIER.
