Description

May 26, 1959 E. w. CHINN FOUNDATION SUPPORT Filed Dec. 5, 1952 INVENTOR- ERLE w.cH//v- ATTORNEY nited States This invention relates to new and useful improvements in foundation supports for structures and being of such construction and having means to prevent termites and other insects from reaching the structure above the foundation supports.
An object of the invention is to provide foundation supports made of permeable materials such as concrete and the like, however said supports may be made of any material or construction which may be of a permeable character as a mass to permit a liquid or insecticide solution to permeate from the chamber or cavity in said supports to the exterior surfaces of said supports to act as an insect repellant to prevent insects from ascending to the building or structure thereabove and from damaging the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide foundation supports of the character described either in separate piers or in chain wall constructions.
A further object of the invention is to provide foundation supports of the character described which are of very simple and cheap construction and can be used safely in building construction to avoid fire hazards and yet maintain symmetry in the foundation for buildings and structures.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a method of coating the exterior surfaces of a mass, for example, a permeable foundation support of concrete or the like, whereby liquids may be introduced into said mass and causing the same to permeate constantly through the mass to keep the exterior surfaces of the mass coated with the liquids at all times.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be more fully disclosed in the specification, the drawings of which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention, in which The figure is a view in elevation of a foundation support with wood sill thereabove covering the chamber or cavity therein.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals denote like parts in the various views, the foundation support or block 1 is shown to be made of concrete in the present embodiment of the invention, however, it is understood that it may be made of any material, mass or construction which permits of permeability suitable for the use here intended. A chamber or cavity 2 is formed in the support or block 1, preferably with a slight taper extending downwardly from the top of said support to within approximately the same distance from the bottom of the support as the distance from the sides of said chamber or cavity is from the side walls exteriorly of said support or block. The top 3 of said chamber Patented May 26, 1959 or cavity is capped and/ or sealed off with a sill or other cross support used in building construction or the like as shown in the drawing. A port or trough such as indicated at 4 leads from the exterior of said support 1 and communicates with the chamber or cavity 2 near its upper end through which liquids such as common known insecticides may be introduced therethrough to said chamber or cavity 2, a liquid fluid being shown at 5. A plug 7 is provided of the same configuration as the port or trough to prevent debris from stopping up the port, and particularly, for sealing off the liquids in the cavity 2 which may be introduced therein under pressure or otherwise.
The foundation support may be treated under pressure with fluids or painted or soaked to insure initial coating on its exterior surfaces before installing as the foundation for a building or structure. Thereafter the chamber or cavity is filled with the liquids or insecticide which will insure constant coating on the exterior surfaces of the foundation support or block by permeating through the same and may be replenished when needed in convenient manner through the port or trough which communicates with the chamber or cavity of the support. Crawling insects, such as the well known termites, will be discouraged from ascending the support as treated to the upper structure of the building which has been found not only invading wood structures but from masonry and thence to the wood structure thereabove in buildings which have done untold damage. The simple support as treated in this invention will positively and effectively eradicate this menace in a safe and economical way. I would prefer to use well known high penetrating liquids which are non-inflammable to eliminate fire hazards, many of which are well known, thus providing fire proof foundation supports for all buildings or structures where used.
It is obvious that many changes in detail of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A concrete foundation support for structures having a central chamber formed therein for storage of an insect repellant liquid, insect repellant liquid in said chamber, said support being of a permeable mass whereby the liquid from said chamber will permeate through said support to the exterior surfaces thereof, liquid from said chamber constantly permeating through said support to constantly coat the exterior surfaces thereof, a port communicating with said chamber whereby an insect repellant liquid may be introduced into said chamber, and means for sealing the upper portion of said chamber.
