My invention relates to improvements in grinding wheels.
My invention relates more particularly to grinding wheels of the type which may include a band or ring of abrasive such as standpaper or the like mounted on the periphery or tread portion of the grinding wheel, the tread portion being comparatively hard rubber so constructed that a certain amount of resiliency is given to the sanding surface of the wheel, and due to the rpm. of the grinding wheel, it will expand within limits as required by the work for which it is intended.
Grinding wheels of the type to which I refer are constructed for use at dilferent rates of speed or revolutions per minute, and these grinding wheels are also constructed in different sizes, ranging from comparatively small grinding wheels such as three or four inches in diameterto comparatively large wheels from 14 inches to 30 inches in diameter.
Each of the grinding wheels, regardless of its size, has a tread portion capable of guided movement during expansion, said movement being limited according to the construction of the wheel. The present invention is directed to improvements in grinding wheels of the general type described and has as an object the addition thereto of expansion control means generally associated with the hubs of the grinding wheels.
A further object of the invention is to provide in combination with grinding wheels of the type described expansion control means just below the expanding flange for controlling generally the extent to which the flange may be expanded during use. y For a more comprehensive understanding of the details of construction and the manner in which the expansion control is constructed and secured, reference is had to the following description and accompanying drawings, upon which: 1

, showing a further modified form of combined side plate Patented May 26, 1959 In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, I have shown a grinding wheel 10 which may include a cylindrically shaped hub member 12, disc-shaped side plates 14 and 16, and atread member 18. The hub member 12 is provided with an axial bore 20 to receive the drive shaft 22 of a motor 24, the side plates 14 and 16 having the openings 26 and 28 respectively for the shaft 22, the same being fastened to the wheel by means of a lock nut 30 fastened on the end threaded portion 32 of the shaft 22. 1
The tread member 18 may include a peripheral ring member 34 having an outer surface 36 to receive an abrasive band 38, the ring member 34 being connected by a medial web 40 with a hub portion 42 of the tread member that has a bore 44 to receive the metal hub 12.
The hub of the tread member may be fastened by means of a plurality of pin members 46 to the side plates 14 and 16, each of the pin members 46 having a spacer 48 thereabout, the ends of the pins 46 being riveted over to securely lock together the side plates 14 and 16 and the hub portion 42 of the tread member 18. The hub portion 42 may also have a peripheral ridge 50 through which the 1 when the grinding wheel is rotated the ring portion will fly outwardly by centrifugal force with the pins moving outwardly in the elongated slots 64. Thus when pressure is applied to the abrasive band, as by grinding a casting or other work piece, there is no tendency to compress the expanded tread for the reason that the pin member in efiect is backed up against a side wall of the elongated opening, the side wall forming a solid bracing for the expanding tread member at a comparatively high rate of speed.
The construction as thus far described may be generally similar to that shown in Figs. 9 and 10 of my copending application, Serial No. 710,904, filed January 24, 1958, and the additions which have been made herein will now be described.
I have found from extensive experiment that by using I a harder or softer rubber in the tread member, the expension of the periphery by centrifugal force is greater or less. I have further found that with the construction shown in Fig. 9 of the aforementioned copending application, the medial web 106 thereof generally absorbs the stretch or expansion of the tread member, and in order to effect a more stringent control, I provide expansion control rings 70 on the peripheral flanges 72 of the hub portion 18., The expansion ring 70, while preferably made of metaland of a size to fit tightly on the flanges 72, may be made of other material if desired, and may also be made with a looser fit, depending upon the limits within which expansion control is desired. With the rings in the position shown, the expansion or stretching of any portion of the hub 42 is thus prevented and the 3 the ring portion 82 and the hub 90 of the tread member, the hub 90 being mounted upon a metal collar 92 that is fastened on the shaft 94 of a motor 96 by a lock nut 98, as shown. The grinding wheel may also be provided with side plates 100 and 102 that are fastened between the hub of the motor and a washer 104 on the shaft 94, and may have elongated slots 106 in which the pins 108 may ride. The pin members are for the same purpose described in connection with Figs. 1 to 3.
In the construction of the grinding wheel shown in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive, I have mounted an expansion control ring 110 on each side of the medial web 88 on the peripheral flanges 112 of the hub portion of the tread member 80. Each of the rings 110 may be provided with a lateral flange 114 that bears against a side of the medial web 88 of the tread member.
With this construction, expansion again is confined to the area of the web 83, and in addition, the lateral flanges 114 of the ring members guide the grinding wheel so that no sideways wobble or movement can be effected to the tread portion of the same.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a modified expansion control ring which may be used with the grinding wheel shown in Fig. 4, the control ring 120 being formed integral with the side plate 122, the same being secured together by welding or otherwise. In this structure the ring member 120 would of course embrace the flange 112 of the hub 90 of the grinding wheel in the same manner as the expansion control ring 110.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 8, which is generally a fragmentary cross-sectional view of a comparatively large grinding wheel, the structure may include a peripheral ring portion 130, the outer surface 132 receiving an abrasive band 134, the ring portion being connected by a medial web 136 to a hub portion 138.
Combination side plates and expansion control rings 140 are provided, each member including a disc portion 142 having an axial opening 144 for a motor shaft 146. The outer periphery of each disc portion 142 is formed with an inwardly turned lateral flange 148 which encompasses the circular edge 150 of the hub portion 138 of the tread member. The combined side plate and ring member also has an outwardly tapered disc portion 152 extending from a point adjacent the edges of the medial web 136 to the side edges 154 of the ring portion 130 where it has a disc-like extension 156 parallel to the portion 142 of the same. Elongated openings 158 are provided in the portions 156 for the ends of the retaining pins 160 that operate in a manner similar to that previously described herein.
The assembly may be secured together by means of pin members 162 that extend through the hub 138 of the tread member and through suitable openings 164 in the disc portions 142 of the members 140, the pin 162 carrying a spacer 163 positioned between the members 140. A plurality of the pin members 162 may thus be provided for holding the assembly together, the same being pro vided in a circular row about the hub in a number as needed or desired.
With the construction shown in Fig. 8, it can be seen that I have provided a combined side plate and expansion control ring so constructed that the expansion will only take place in the web 136. Side play of the peripheral ring portion is further avoided through the bracing of the tapered flange portions 152 of the combined unit, thus insuring rigid, efiectively operating construction.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred form and some modifications of a structure including an expansion control ring, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes and modifications may be made in the exact details shown. What I desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A circular abrasive wheel of the class described comprising a rubber tread member having a circular hub portion adapted to be mounted on a motor shaft, a web extending outwardly from said hub portion, a peripheral ring on the outer edge of said web portion, a pair of side plates, said side plates positioned on opposite sides of said tread member having facing circular cups to receive opposite sides of said hub portions, a peripheral row of rivets having spacers thereon positioned in the hub of said tread member and connecting said side plates together about said hub portion, diagonally directed elongated slots in said side plates adjacent their peripheral edges, pin members positioned in said ring with their ends engaging in said slots, and a wall connecting the inner end of said cups with the circular outer portion of said plates aligned with the sides of said ring.
2. A circular abrasive wheel of the class described comprising a rubber tread member having a circular hub portion adapted to be mounted on a motor shaft, a web extending outwardly from said hub portion, a peripheral ring on the outer edge of said web portion, a pair of disclike side plates positioned on opposite sides of said tread member, said side plates having facing circular cups to receive opposite sides of said hub portions, a circular row of rivets having spacers thereon positioned in the hub of said tread member and connecting said side plates together about said hub portion, diagonally directed elongated slots in said side plates adjacent their peripheral edges, pin members positioned in said ring with their ends engaging in said slots, and a wall connecting the inner end of said cups with the circular outer portion of said plates aligned with the sides of said ring, the circular outer portion of said plate and said cups being in vertical alignment.
3. A circular abrasive wheel of the class described comprising a rubber thread member having a circular hub portion adapted to be mounted on a motor shaft, a web extending outwardly from said hub portion, a peripheral ring on the outer edge of said web portion, a pair of circular side plates positioned on opposite sides of said tread member, said side plates having facing circular cups to receive opposite sides of said hub portions, a circular row of rivets having spacers thereon positioned in the hub of said tread member and connecting said side plates together about said hub portion, diagonally directed elongated slots in said side plates adjacent their peripheral edges, pin members positioned in said ring with their ends engaging in said slots, and a wall connecting the inner end of said cups with the circular outer portion of said plates aligned with the sides of said ring, the circular outer portion of said plate and said cups in vertical alignment, and an inwardly tapered wall portion from the inner edge of said circular outer portion to the inner edge of said cup portion.
4. A circular abrasive wheel of the class described comprising a circular hub adapted to be mounted on a motor shaft, a pair of circular side plates attached to said hub, each of said side plates having an outwardly turned circular flange and a row of elongated slots near the peripheral edge of the same, a rubber tread member comprising a ring member and hub portion adapted to fit over said first mentioned hub, pin members extending through said ring member and engaging said slots, the hub portion of said tread member having a circular ridge on each side of the same received in the circular flange of said side plates, rivets extending through said ridges and flanges to connect the two side plates and hub portion of the tread member together, said tread member having a medial web extending outwardly from said hub to said ring member leaving a pair of circular hub edge flanges, a peripheral ring portion on the outer edge of said web and a pair of expansion control rings on said hub edge flanges.
5. A circular abrasive wheel of the class described comprising a circular hub adapted to be mounted on a motor shaft, a pair of circular side plates attached to said hub, each of said side plates having a row of elongated slots near the peripheral edge of the same, a rub ber tread member comprising a ring member and a. hub portion adapted to fit over said first mentioned hub, pin members extending through said ring member and engaging said slots, said tread member having a medial web extending outwardly from said hub to said ring member, a peripheral hub edge flange on each side of said web and a pair of circular expansion control rings mounted on said hub edge flange portions.

A circular abrasive wheel of the class described comprising a circular hub adapted to be mounted on a motor shaft, a pair of circular side plates attached to said hub, each of said side plates having a row of elongated slots near the peripheral edge of the same, a rubber thread member comprising a ring member and a hub portion adapted to fit over said first mentioned hub, pin members extending through said ring member and engaging said slots, said tread member having a medial web extending outwardly from said hub to said ring member, a peripheral hub edge flange on each side of said web and a pair of circular expansion control rings mounted on said hub edge flange portions, said control rings formed integral with said side plates.

A circular abrasive wheel of the class described comprising a ring member and a circular hub adapted to be mounted on a motor shaft, a pair of circular side plates attached to said hub, each of said side plates having a row of elongated slots near the peripheral edge of the same, pins extending through said ring member engaging said slots, a rubber tread member comprising a circular hubportion adapted to fit over said first mentioned hub, said tread member having a web extending outwardly from said hub leaving a peripheral hub edge portion, and an expansion control ring mounted on said hub edge portion.

A circular abrasive wheel of the class described comprising a circular hub adapted to be mounted on a motor shaft, a pair of circular side plates attached to said hub, each of said side plates havingan outwardly turned circular flange and a row of elongated slots near the peripheral edge of the same, a rubber tread member comprising a ring member and hub portion adapted to fit over said first mentioned hub, pin members extending through said ring member and engaging said slots, the hub portion of said tread member having a circular ridge on each side of the same received in the circular flange of said side plates, rivets extending through said ridges and flanges to connect the two side plates and hub portion of the tread member together, said tread member having a medial web extending outwardly from said hub to said ring member leaving a pair of circular hub edge flanges, a peripheral ring portion on the outer edge of said web and a pair of expansion control rings on said hub edge flanges, said control rings having outwardly extending flanges lying adjacent the parallel side walls of said web.
