UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
CHARLES-W. REEVES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNQR TO M. M. HOLMES & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 288,737, dated November 20, 1883.
Application filed January 23, 1883.
- new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, refer-- ence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in chairs, and it consists in the combination of a chair, a back which is hingedthereto, acurved ratchet which is attached to the back at one end and a spring at the oth'lr, and aweighted lever, which automatically ocks the back of the chair at any desired angle.
Theobject of my invention is to provide a reclining-chair having a hinged back which can be inclined backward at any angle to suit the convenience of the person using the chair, and at the same time provide the chair with a foot-rest upon which the feet can be extended.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the foot-rest. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the locking-lever. Y
" A represents an arm-chair, which may be of any desired construction, and B the back, which is hinged thereto, so that it can be moved back and forth at the will of the per- Attached to this back, upon each side, are the curved ratchet-bars C, which extend forward between the. post F and the metallic plate G, which is secured thereto. This metallic plate has an arm, I,
projecting forward any suitable distance under the arm of the chair, and upon this arm is pivoted the weighted operating-lever J, which has its inner end turned at right angles, so as to form the catch L, To the outer end of this lever is attached a weighted handle, N, which projects out under the arm of the chair in such amanner that it can be readily grasped by the fingers and the outer end of the lever raised upward. When this lever is left free to act, the catch upon its inare brought into (No model.)
ratchet-bar, and thus lock the back of the chair in any desired position. When these levers are held upward at their lower ends either by the hands or by loops, which may be attached to the arms for this purpose, the 5 5 back of the chair can be moved back and forth, so as to give the same motion as arocking-chair to the back of the person. The elasticity of thesprings, which may either be,
of the shape here shown, or/ any other thatpo is released. WVhere the chair is to be used for reclining purposes the back is tilted backward to the desired angle, and then the locking-levers hold it there, and then in this p0= sition the elasticity of the springs does not affect the back in any manner.
play only when the levers are held out of use.
In order to allow the feet to be raised up ward at the same time that the back of the chair is tilted back, the grooved guide 0 is front end, by a suitable link or links, a footrest, Q. After the support or guide 0' has been moved outward to the desired extent beyond the front edge of the chair, the foot-rest is turned upward over its top so as to form a suitable rest for the feet. in use, will be moved back under the chair, so as to be out of the way.
I am aware that a chair having a hinged back and a ratchet-rod secured to it, and used in connection with a catch to hold the back 0.
in any desired position, is not new, and this I disclaim. My invention differs from this in the location of the spring and the locking lever.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim- In a chair, the combination of the chairbody, the hinged back- B, ratchet-bar C, hav
ner end is made toengage with the curved 50 The springs 70 This rest, when not 8 5 ing its inner end secured to an S-sha-ped spring, which is located on the body, the guiding-plate G, having the extension I, and the Weighted lever which extends out under the arm at its outer end, and engages with the ratchet-bar at its inner one, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
M. M. HOLMES, PERCY FARRELL.
