The oil in box D is oonveyeilor i'oiseil to the oin-nail. B by mesmo of "wicks or pooking (I, which pin s inlo longitudinal elm mioli: cin bom ing 0, and thence into the communicating and enlarged voylgloal channels a, as shown iullig.
1, so that the upper ends of said wicks contact with the journal 13, which wipes or brushes off the oil therefrom.
The channels 0 cmaybc located one on each side of the rib e, as shown, or otherwise suitably disposed as desired. 4
I The wicks (.1 may be of cotton, wool, felt, or other fibrous or absorptive material; or a coiled spiral spring, or zigzag bent wire with or without a fibrous packing may be used, in which case the vibration of the spring or bent wire due to the jolt'ing of the axle-box will assist the capillary action of the wicking to more effectually feed the oil to the bearing G. The last-named construction of wick is shown in Fig. 4; but, if desired, any other suitable means may be employed to convey oil from box D to bearing 6. Said box may be provided with a central aperture, 0, into which is inserted a steel or hard-metal pin, F, with head f standingdn front of journal 13', as shown, for the end of the axle to abut against and prevent its longitudinal movement inutilating or straining the box D.
When the bearing 0 and box D are constructed and arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the axle may be 'collarless; but when said parts are to be used upon an axle having a collar, a transverse slot is formed on the under side of the bearing adjacent to saideollar for it to work or revolve in. Such constrnctionis represented in Fig. i. v
The operation is obvious. When the oil-box D is used in connection with. the waste and oil in well a, the journal H is supplied with oil both above and below it, orhas two sources of supply, and is thereby thoroughly lubricated. Surplus oil fed thereto is taken up by the packing (it, so that in, case the oil inv box D becomes exhausted and the waste a settles or falls away from journal B, said packing supplies the necessary lubricant for prevent ing heating of said journal, or avoiding what is technically called a hot box)! if desired, the packing G and slots 9 may be dispensed with, in which case the supply of oil in box D is depended upon to prevent the heating of the journal when the waste a settles away therefrom. So, too, the bearing (3 and box D may alone be. used for lubricating the journal 13; and, if desired, said box D may then extend backward under said journal, to afford an increased oilsupply therefor.
The shield II is composed of an annular coiled springof varying width or diameters in cross-sections, as shown, the coils on its upper and lower parts being larger than those on or composing its sides, so that as thebcaring (3 wears and the axle rises in the box A, said shield still closes and seals the opening in the rear wall of the axle-box; but, ifdcsired, the coils of spring ll' may all be of the same diameter, and may be oblong in cross-section, as shown, or otherwise suitably configured. To insure close contact between said spring. axle, and walls of box A. the spring is packed with wool, felt, asbestos, or other fibrous or;
absorptive material, (represented at h,) which not only serves to exclude dust and dirt from Y prevents leakage of oil may depend from arid extend. along either or both longitudinal sides of the bearing, in which case the axle-box may be made wider than isnow customary, to accommodate such construction of bearing and depending oilboxes. So, too, while I have shown my improvements applied to an axle-box having a well for waste and oil, it is obvious that said waste may be dispensed with, and the oil in boxD be alone relied upon for eifecting a lubrication of the axle-journal and its bearing. Again, I do not confine myself to the use of the wicks d for conveying the oil from box 1) to bearing 0, as-a tube having a small bore, through which the oil will pass by'eapillary attraction, or a pump operated by the vibratory action of the carer axle-box, may be substituted therefor; or any other suitable or desired means may be used to effect such result.
I am aware that brasses or bearings for journals have been recessed or made hollow, for the purpose of holdinga supply of oil which is conveyed to the bearing-surfaces by wicks; but my invention does: not embrace such construction, as the oil-box is independent of the brass, although formed integral therewith.
What I claim is- 1. A brass or hearing for journals, provide with a depending closed or sealed oil-box, and means for conveying oil to the bearing-surface of the brass, substantially as shown and described.
2. The brass or bearing C,-l1aving slots formed therein which are filled with a selflubricating or absorptive packing, and a depending oil-box with means for raising or com "veying the oil to the bearing, substantially as shown and described.
3. The brass or bearing 0, having slots 0 c, oil-box D, with filling-opening having a removable cover, and means for conveying oil from said box to and through said channels, substantially as shown and described.
4. The brass or bearing 0, having depending oil-box D, carrying an abutting pm or block, and means for conveying oil to the bearing, substantially as shown and described.
5. The brass or bearing 0, having oil-box D, with central opening, a, pin or block F, and
wicks d, substantially as shown and described. r
6. In combination with a car-axle box, the bearing 0, having packing G and box D, and means for conveying oil from box D to said bearing, substantially as shown and described.
7. Iii-combination with a car-axle box, the
bearing (1, having depending closed or sealed I oil-bond), and means for conveying oil from the letter to" said bearing, substantially as shown nnddescribed. i
t 8;;111 combination with oar-axle box A, hav- -;ing wella, packed with waste saturated with oil, a brass or bearing, 0, having oil-box D, and means for conveying oil from the latter to said bearing-substantially as shown and described.
' or absorptive inet-erial; substantially as shown .-;9 A dust shield for car-axle boxes, com- I posed-0f an annular coiled spring packed with afi-brous or absorptive material, as and for the V npnxposc-sot-forth. I 1 i .110. The dnstssbield H, composed of on annnlatrgcoiled spring of varying widths in different cross-sections, and packed with a fibrous enddescribed,
1-1. In combination with a car-axle box, the
brass'or bearing 0, having ohannels'c 0, oile box I), and coiled spring or zigzag bent rod, wick, or conveyer, with or without a fibrous or absorptive packing, substantially as shown and described. 12. A brass or bearing having depending oil-box secured to or formed thereon, and means, substantially as shown and described, for conveying oil from the box to the bearing, as set forth. l r In testimony. whereof I affix my signature in 0 presence of two witnesses GEORGE F.
