Description

BLADE LIFTER FOR SAFETY RAZORS Filed March 28, 1957 INVENTOR David L. Frlslf BY ATTORNEY United. .sfi tates Patent BLADE LIFTER FOR SAFETY RAZORS David L. Fiske, Dover, Mass.
Application March 28, 1957, Serial No. 649,264
1 Claim. (Cl. 30-58) (Granted under Title 35, US. Code (1952), see. 266) The invention described herein, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to safety razors of the conventional type which are provided with a removable blade, and a movable cap for clamping the blade in place when in use, and is a continuation-in-part of my application Serial Number 495,836, filed March 21, 1955, for Safety Razor, now abandoned.
A primary object of the invention resides in the provision of means associated with such safety razors for raising the cutting edge of the blade with the clamping cap, after shaving, so as to present the edge in position for wiping off water, etc., so as to avoid deteriora tion of the blade by rusting.
A further object of the invention consists in providing a finger on the pivoted cap of a safety razor which finger is adapted to releasably engage the blade of the razor so as to lift the same from the bed plate when the cap is lifted.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is an end elevational view of the razor with the improvement incorporated therein;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof; and,
Figures 3, 4 and 5 are longitudinal sectional views through the razor and attachment but showing the clamping cap and the lifting device for the blade in several different positions.
Referring to the drawings more specifically, the numeral 1 indicates the bed plate of the razor provided with a conventional guard 2 and integral handle 3 of hollow construction as indicated by the numeral 4. Pivuted to the bed plate 1 at the edge opposite the guard 2. is a cap 5 for clamping the razor blade in its operative position. The cap 5 is provided on its hinged edge with a pair of hinge knuckles 6 which cooperate with a hinge knuckle 7 and the bed plate 1 to receive a hinge pin 8, whereby the cap may be swung to the several positions indicated in Figures 3 to 5 inclusive for the purpose of either clamping the razor blade in its operative position or to raise the blade to a position in which the cutting edge may be cleaned, as will be described.
The cap 5 is adapted to be held in either open or closed position by means of a leaf spring 10 which is secured to the handle 3 as indicated by numeral 11. Cooperating with the spring 10 is a finger 12 extending downwardly from a hub 13 mounted on the pin 8 between the hinge knuckles '7. Also mounted on the hub 13, but opposite the finger 12, is a finger 14 which extends through an opening 15 in the cap 5 and serves to maintain the cap in either open or closed position as will be readily understood.
The razor blade is indicated by the numeral 16, and in the present illustration is shown as provided with two cutting edges 17, although the invention could be incorporated in a safety razor of the type in which only one cutting edge is provided on the blade.
The blade 16 is provided with a central aperture 18 which when in operative position aligns with the axis of the opening 4 in the handle 3 of the razor. Cooperating with this opening 18 is a spring finger 19 which is secured to the inner face of the clamping cap 5, through the medium of a turned over flange 26, by soldering or otherwise. Formed on the inner end of the spring finger 19 is a pair of corrugations 21 which terminate in a nib 22.
By an inspection of Figure 3 of the drawings it will be noted that the spring finger 19 extends through the opening 18 in the blade 9 and thence downwardly into the longitudinal cavity 4 of the handle 3 when the cap 5 is in its closed position. When the shaving operation is completed it is highly desirable that the operative edge of the blade be thoroughly wiped off so as to avoid deterioration of the cutting edge by oxidation or other- Wise, and in order that this wiping or cleaning operation may be accomplished expeditiously the finger 19 with its nib 22 are provided. By noting Figures 4 and 5 it Will be seen that as the clamping cap 5 is lifted the finger 19 will be drawn outwardly through the opening 18 of the blade 16 until the nib 22 engages under the rim of the opening 18, and continued movement of the cap will cause the nib to swing the blade upwardly about its inner edge as a pivot as indicated in Figure 5, thereby presenting the used edge of the blade in an open unobstructed position so that it may be readily wiped ofi With a cloth or towel held in one of the hands of the operator.
In accordance with the patent laws I have described what I consider to be the preferred form of the invention, but inasmuch as various minor changes may be made in structural details without departing from the spirit of the invention, it is intended that all such changes be included within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A safety razor including a bed plate and a hollow handle open at its inner end, a cap pivotally connected at one edge to the bed plate by means of a fixed pivot, a blade provided with a central opening aligned with the opening in the hollow handle, an arcuate spring finger secured to the inner face of the cap and extending through the opening in the blade and into the hollow of the handle when the cap is closed, and a nib on the free end of said finger for engaging a portion of the rim of the opening and tilting the blade about one of its edges when the cap is swung open about its pivot to position the blade in spaced relation to the cap and bed plate so that its edge may be wiped.
