Description

J. MUIRHEAD.
WATER GvLo'sfT.I
(No Model.)-
Patented Nov. zo, 1883.
Wl TNEEEEEn UNTTED` STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JAMES MUIRHEAD, OF OLNEYVILLE, RHODE ISLAND.
wATER-cLosET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,655, dated November 20, 1883.
Application filed July 3, 1882.
To @ZZ whom, it may concer/L.-
Be it knownthat I, JAMES MUIRHEAD, of
Olncyville, in thecounty of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets, of which the following is a full and correct description, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification. l@
In the drawings, Figure l shows a vertical section of the bowl and case, taken through the center and agreeing withtheline o o, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, taken through the center of the case and agreeing with the line a: zr," Fig. 1'.
A is the bowl, the upper part of which is of the usual shape, but the lower part is curved away to a horizontal position, and the end inserted in the end of the case B. This case is made of cast-iron, or other suitable material may be used. A gate or valve, a, is placed in a vertical position in the case and supported on ways i t' on the sides of the case, and upon which it slides back and forth, so as to open or close the lower end of the bowl A. The gate a has a projecting flange, that covers the opening into the pipe h when the gate is closed, and also serves to prevent any of the contents of the bowl from passing in back of thegate when opened and clogging up the mechanism. A ring of packing, V, of rubber or other suitable substance, is sprung into a groove in the face of the gate, to pack any little inequalities in the end of the bowl that forms the valve-seat. A horizontal rockershaft, d, is placed across the case, moving in bearings in the sides of the case, one end of the shaft extending throughto the outside to receive the wheel d, by which the shaitis opera-ted by means of the rod o, which is attached to a stud in the wheel. The wheel is furnished (No model.)
ing up the ball C, through the trap. At the y saine time the curved arm w raises the valvesteme and allows the water to flow into the bowl through the pipe r. Vhen the rod o is pushed down again, the armtcarries the gate a forward, and as the arm t and the rod g come up into line with each other they forni a toggle-joint, which exerts great pressure on the gate ato make ittight on its seat, and effectually prevents it from being opened by any pressure in the bowl. l
The side of the case B may be made removable, so that easy access may be had to the parts inside.
The vertical position of the gate and its seat prevents anything from remaining on them in the way of their closing tight. The pressure on the gate is `easily exerted by means of the togglejoint, and may be assisted by a weight on the wheel, which at the same time prevents the gate from opening of itself.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bowl A, case B, provided with ways fi i, gate u, packing V, rod g, arm t, and shaft substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES MUIRHEAD.
