Description
UNTED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
J. W. HOUGHTELIN, OF DUQUOIN, ILLINOIS.
BRAN-DUSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,863, dated June 26, 1860.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, J. W. HOUGHTELIN, of
Duquoin, in the county of Perry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Bran-Duster; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of my invention taken in the line m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken in the line y, y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a machine that will cleanse the bran thoroughly and at the same time allow the same to pass readily through without the liability of choking or clogging. In machines of this kind two important requisites are necessary 1st a thorough scouring or rubbing of the bran which is eected by some means to prevent the too quick passage of the bran through the machine and 2d the preventing of the choking or clogging of the machine in consequence of a too sluggish passage of the grain through the machine, it being a rather difficult matter to eifect the two results in the same machine, or, in other words to regulate the passage of the bran through the machine.
The within described invention consists in the employment or use of a fan, revolving screen or bolt in connection with revolving beaters and gatherers arranged within a suitable case to operate substantially as hereinafter described to effect the desired end.
A represents a cylindrical case which is stationary placed in an upright position and has a vertical shaft B, passing centrally through it. On the upper end of the shaft B, above the case A, there is placed a pinion C, which gears into a wheel D, on a small shaft that passes through the top of the case A, and has a pinion a, on it the pinion a, gearing into a geared rim b, at the top of a frame E, of a cylindrical bolt or screen F, which is tted loosely on the shaft B, and is allowed to turn independently on or around the same. The lower end of the bolt frame E, has radial arms o, on which oblique plates d, are secured as shown in Fig. 1. The bolt or screen F, has a concentric position with the case A, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
lVithin the bolt or screen F, and on the shaft B, there are placed two circular disks c, c, between which near their peripheries vertical beaters f, and gatherers g, are placed or secured, alternately. The beaters f, have curved faces armed with teeth or spikes and the gatherers g, have oblique faces placed in such relation with the beaters that the former may as the disks e, e, rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow 1, draw in the bran behind the beaters, see red arrows Fig. 2.
Around the beaters f, and gatherers g, there is secured a spiral wire or ledge Gr. This wire or ledge is in the space between the beaters and gatherers and the bolt.
Above the upper disk c, there is a circular plate H, which is attached to the disk by means of bent plates h. The plate H, has a circular opening z', at its center. The bottom plate of the cylindrical case A, is provided with an opening j, and with a flap or door lc.
The beaters f, may be described as being longitudinal quarter sections of cylinders having' 011e plane or side radial with the p-lates c, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The gatherers g, are simply plates of sheet or cast metal secured vertically between the disks e, e. The upper end of the case A, has an opening through which the bran is fed to the machine.
The operation is as follows: The bran is fed into the top of the machine and motion is given the shaft B, by any convenient power. The disks e, e, with their beaters and gatherers rotate in one direction, and the bolt F, in an opposite direction as indicated by the arrows l, 2, in Fig. 2. The bran passes down between the bolt F, and the disks e, e, the bent plates z serving as feeders, and drawing the bran within the machine and also generating a blast which passes through the screen F, and keeps the meshes open. The gatherers 6, draw the bran within the path of rotation of the beaters, as indicated by the red arrows and cause the latter to act in the most etlicient manner on the bran rubbing and scouring it m the most thorough manner. The spiral ledge or Wire Gr, serves to retard the passaoe of the bran through the machine causing t e bran to pass through with a speed commensurate with the speed at the rotation of the beaters and gatherers f, g, and the bolt F. The bran falls on the bottom of case A, and is drawn to the center opening j', by the Scrapers (Z, and is discharged through said opening. rl`he dust is scraped from the bottom of the machine through an opening c, at the lower part of the case A, a delecting plate Z', being Within the case to insure the passage of the dust out of the case.
ers l substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
