SILVANUS F. ENOS, OF ETNA, ILLINOIS.
EDUCATIONAL DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,628, dated November 20, 1883.
Application filed March 6,1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, SILvANUs F. ENos, of Etna, Goles county, Illinois, ha've invented certain Improvements in Educational Devices, of which the following is a specication.
My invention is an educational device designed to demonstrate the positions of differ ent geographical pointswith respect to some central point; and it consists of a post with indicatingarms, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan View', and Fig. 3 is a diagram illustrating the manner of using the device.
A is a cylinder or post, which terminates in a pedestal, B. Upon and concentrically with the said body A is a series of disks, a a, increasing in diameter from the bottom upward. Each disk a carries a series `of short inclined brackets, c, each supporting an arm, d, inclined as and for a purpose to be described hereinafter, and marked in any suitable manner with the name of some geographical place. The upper end of each arm d terminates in a head or hook, e, which rests upon a flange, f, of the collar h, secured to the disk. Each arm `is set at such an angle as to indicate the direction of the place named on the arm from the point in which the device is placed. For instance, assuming that Washington is the central point, the arm that indicates the location of Port Huron is on the uppermost disk, and points northwest, and dips `toward the earth very little, while that referring to Rio Janeiro will occupya place in one of the lower series of arms, point south, and incline to a marked degree, in each case the arm coinciding with a line, ao, drawn from the point of at- 4o tachment of the arm to the post directly `soribing witnesses.
throughthe earth to the point indicated.
It will thus be seen that by the employment of the described device the pupil is made to comprehend the exact positions occupied by different places on the earth with respect to some central point.
I do not limit myself tothe precise construction shown and described,` as the device may be modified and changed without departing from the spirit of my invention. Thus it will be obvious that the disks and their connections may be entirely dispensed with, the arms being attached to the post, and that any suitable adjusting devices may be employed to vary the inclination and direction in which. the arms are set. When an arm is to indicate the position of a mountain, it may have a projection, S, the relative heights of the different projections inf dicating the relative heights of different mount, ains. Upon each arm maybe marked the distance ofthe point indicated by the name upon the arm from the place in which the device is intended to be used.
I claim- 1. In an educational device, a post combined with a series of fixed arms marked and inclined to correspond to the direction of the places named upon the arms, substantially as set forth.
2. In an educational device, the combina tion, with a post, A, of a series of fixed disks arranged upon the body, and carrying a series of arms, d, inclined to point the direction of places named on said arms, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two sub- SILVANUS F. ENOS. Vitnesses:
T. E. HANoooK,
T. E. BARRETT.
