VEHICLE-SPRING ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, JOHN B. WHlTooMB, a citizen of the UnitedStates of America, residing at-Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Spring Attachments, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a plan view, on the top of the lower half of the box P, `that supports the spring S'.

This invention relates to certain improvements in carriage-springs of that class ordinarily `used in side-bar carriages; and is intended to be an improvement on the device patented by this applicant in the United States in his patent dated. March2, 1880, No. 225,087. .l

Ihe particular improvement I have made I will describe in the following specification.

\ Referring to the drawings, B represents the ordinary side bar of the carriage; S, the crossspring supporting the same; Hfa cross crankshaft supporting the body-spring S', and having its ends bent in the form of acrank, and

supported in a shackle forming a universal joint, which consists of the parts a and a2, hinged together by the bolt d, and the part a, hinged to the clip-plate a' by the bolt d". The spring S', which supports the body of the carriage, rests at its outer end on a box, P, and is held thereon by the clip m, so that instead of having the end bent to form an eye to clasp and `journal on the shaft H, it is attached thereto by means of the box P, having its screwthreaded upturned legs pass through the spring and held therein by suitable nuts, fn..

The novelty in this invention consists in supporting the spring S' on the shaft H by means of the box P, and having the ends of the shaft H turn upl in the form of a crank suspended in a universal joint attached to the side bar. This permits a swing of the body of the carriage both sidewise and lengthwise. If the bar or shaft H were straight, no endk swing of the body could be had, and there could be no elasticity of the spring S'. By the use of the box P, the end of the spring may remain flat and straight, as shown in Fig. j

1, so as to lie at on the top of the box P, soits ends may not be bent in an eye to inclose the shaft H, also, such a box, P, may be replaced when worn, which could not be done in the case of an eye on the end of the spring, and thereby save injuring the temper of the spring in forming an eye by heating it.

Another novel feature is the form of the box P, as shown in Fig. 2. To prevent it from sliding laterally along on the shaft H, to become detached from the clip its outer surface is curved or serrated to correspond with the form of the clip, as shown in Fig. 2. The two halves of the box P are also held from forward and backward movement by the tongue and rabbetz. Any form of curve or serration of the box and clip may be` used to accomplish the purpose.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:

1. The combination of the spring S', box P, crankshaft H, box-shackle a a2, plate a', and side bar, B, all adapted to operate as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the spring S' ,=cra'nk shaft H, and box P, and clip m, having curved or serrated contact-surfaces, all arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a carriage spring for side-bar ca-rriages, the body-spring S', having the box P, in 'combination with the crank-shaft H, 4suspended from the side bar, B, so as to permit either forward and backward or side motion to the body of the carriage, as set forth.

4. In the carriage spring described, the shaft H, having its outer ends bent in form of a crank, and supported or hung thereby in suitable boxing from the side bar, B, and adapted to support the spring S' on the box P, as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination of the springs S and S', crank-shaft H, box P, clips m c c', shacklebox a a', bolts d d', and side bar, B, all arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth. t
