Description

(No Model.)
\ 1 J. L. BUSHONG. WASHING MAGHlNB.
- fo all whom it may concern:
UNIT-ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. BUSHONG, OF OSKALOOSA,IIOWA.
WASHING-MACHINE,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,543, dated November 13,1883.
Application led March 12, 1853.
Be it known that I, JosErH L. BUsHoNG, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Washing-Machine, of which the following is a speci-V cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to washing-machines of that class in which the clothes are washed by friction between the bottom of the box or tub and the under side of a rocker; and the invention has for its objectto provide a machine possessing superior advantages in point of simplicity and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top view of my improved washing-machine. vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective, showing the method of fastening the spring-cushions to the under side of the removable bottom. Fig. 5 isa view of `the bottom of the rocker.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the box or body of my improved washing-machine, whichis preferably rectangular in shape, and comprises a bottom, B, and perpendicular sides C. t
shown, `and braces the same. iol` tions, J, to admit of the escape of the water.
Fig. 2 is ai (No model.) y
K is the rocker, which is preferably not pivoted in the box, but operates freely inside the latter. The said rocker comprises sides L L and a curved bottom, M, on which is arranged a series of projecting iianges, N, forming angular'chambers O over the surface of the said bottom. The side pieces, L, of the rocker have end extensions, l?, at the top, in which are journaled the ends of transverse rollers Q, and the rocker is also provided with an operating sta or handle, R.
In operation, the rocker works on the bottom D, and the rollers Q Q prevent friction with the end pieces or sides C C of the box A.
` The rocker has a slight longitudinal movement on the bottom D, which causes the edges of the projecting plates or flanges N to rub the clothes, while the cushions of the bottom D enable it to give to the rocker sufliciently to prevent damage or tearing of the clothes.
I claim as my invention The combination of the box or body A, the perforated bottom D, having a fiat, smooth` top surface, and provided with the cross-,pieces G G on its under side, the springs secured to these cross pieces or strips, the rocker K, vibrating freely in the said box and not pivoted, and having a curved bottoni formed with the projecting iianges N that form the angular chambers VO, and the transverse rollers Q, journaled at the top end edges of the rocker, all arranged and operating as set forth.` Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JosErH LONG EUsEoNG.
