4 Claims. (Cl. 132-42) This invention relates to devices for use in curling the hair. More particularly, the invention deals with an openwork curler body having a contracted central portion and flared ring-like end portions, with an elastic or other hair holding member attached to one end portion of the curler body and detachable and adjustable with respect to the other end portion thereof, thereby providing a wide range of securement of a swatch of hair wound upon the curler body.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

Fig. l is a side view of the curler body only and illustrating, diagrammatically, end portions only of the body in full lines.

Fig. 2 is a broken longitudinal enlarged sectional view of the curler assemblage, illustrating the elastic band in operative position and omitting all background showing of the openwork portion of the curler body, the ends and central portion of the curler body only being diagrammatically illustrated; and

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing part of the end of the curler body in elevation.

In practice, I provide a tubular curler body 10, preferably composed of molded plastics, the body portion being contracted centrally, as seen at 11 in Fig. 2, and having outwardly flared collar or

ring ends

12 and 13. The body, intermediate the ring ends-12 and 13, is made of openwork structure by intersecting cross-ribs, forming more or less diamond-shaped openings, as diagrammatically seen at 14 in Fig. 1. Parts of the ribs forming the openings 14 are diagrammatically illustrated in section at 15 in Fig. 2 of the drawing simply to illustrate that the ribs are preferably rounded on their outer surfaces.

The ring end 12 has a plurality of circumferentially spaced apertures 16, four being indicated in the accompanying drawing. However, additional apertures can be provided if desired. These apertures have outwardly flared entrance passages 17 to facilitate forcible passage of the hair holding band or member 18 into the apertures 16, as indicated at the left of Fig. 2.

The band or member 18 is composed of rubber or an extensible plastic and has, at one end, a shallow conical mounting head 19, the cone extending in the direction of the member 18, as clearly noted, so that the peripheral end 20 of the head can seat in an annular channel 21 formed between inner and outer inwardly extending circumferential projections or

22 and 23 on the ring end 13. [n the construction shown, the member 18 extends integrally from the recessed surface of the head 19.

It will thus be seen that, by pressing the head 19 into the body through the ring 13, the walls of the head 19 will flex past the rib 23 and then expand into the channel 21 and, thus, be securely held against accidental displacenent from the ring 13.

. 2,884,932 Patented May .5, 1959 It is preferred that the head 19 have a plurality of circumferentially spaced apertures 24 for circulation of air through the curler body to assist in drying a swatch of hair wound thereon.

The other end portion of the band or member 18 has a plurality of spaced collar portions 25, which are adapted to be positioned so as to engage the inner and/or outer surface of the ring end 12 to retain said end portion of the band or member 18 against accidental displacement. The terminal end of the b and or member has a fingerpiece 26 in the form of an enlarged ring to facilitate manual attachment and detachment of the end portion of the band or member 18 with the ring end 12 of the curler.

Centrally of the body 10 is preferably formed a transverse bracing wall 27, apertured as seen at 28, to complete the circulation of air through the curler. This structure can also be utilized for mounting of other types of hair retaining bands or members, which would be attached to the wall 27 and extend out through the end ring 13, as will be apparent.

In the use of the curler, the fingerpiece end portion of the band or member 18 is detached from the ring 12, the swatch is wound around the body 10, after which, the band or member'18 is passed over the hair wound upon the body 10 and the fingerpiece end attached to the ring 12, as diagrammatically seen in Fig. 2.

In some instances, it will be apparent that the portion of the band or member 18, between the ring ends 12 and 13, may assume a curved contour, particularly if a relatively large amount of hair is wound upon the body 10.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a hair curler having an outwardly flared tubular end portion, with inwardly projecting means in the bore of said end portion, a hair retaining member of flexible material, said member having a flexible head, at one end portion thereof, adapted to be inserted into said end portion of the curler body and flexed over said means to extend into the bore of said end portion, said head then expanding to engage said means in retaining said member against accidental displacement from said end portion of the curler, and said member having, at the other end portion thereof, means engaging the other end portion of the curler body in retaining said member in operative position longitudinally of the curler body.

2. In a hair curler having an outwardly flared tubular end portion, with inwardly projecting means in the bore of said end portion, a hair retaining member of flexible material, said member having a flexible head, at one end portion thereof, adapted to be inserted into said end portion of the curler body and flexed over said means to extend into the bore of said end portion, said head then expanding to engage said means in retaining said member against accidental displacement from said end portion of the curler, said member having, at the other end portion thereof, means engaging the other end portion of the curler body in retaining said member in operative position longitudinally of the curler body, said head being in the form of a shallow cone, and said member integrally joining the head and extending from the recessed surface of the head.

3. In a hair curler having an outwardly flared tubular end portion, with inwardly projecting means in the bore of said end portion, a hair retaining member of flexible material, said member having a flexible head, at one end portion thereof, adapted to be inserted into said end portion of the curler body and flexed over said means to extend into the bore of said end portion, said head then expanding to engage said means in retaining said member against accidental displacement from said end portion of the curler, said member having, at the other end portion thereof, means engaging the other end portion of the curler body 'in retaining said member in operative position longitudinally of the curler body, said head being in the form of a shallow cone, said member integrally joining the head and extending from the recessed surface of the head, and said head having circumferentially spaced apertures.

4. In a hair curler having an outwardly flared tubular end portion, with inwardly projecting means in the bore of said end portion, a hair retaining member of flexible material, said member having a 'flexible head, at one end portion thereof, adapted to beinserted into said end portion of the curler body and flexed over said means to extend into the bore of said end portion, said head then expanding to engage said means in retaining said member against accidental displacement from said end portion of the curler-,aaid member having, at the other end portion thereof, means engaging the other end portion of the curler body in retaining said member in operative position longitudinally of the curler body, the central portion of the curler body having a transverse bracing wall, and said wall having an aperture therein exposed to both end portions of said body.
