UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
J OHN CHOICE PRINTUP, OF ROME, GEORGIA.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,488, dated November 13, 1883.
` Application led August 3, 1883. lNo model.)
`To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JoHN CHOICE PRINTUP, of Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Im-` pro'vement in Cone Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a full, clear,'and exact description. i
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the gures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of my improvement, shown as applied to a locomotive smokestack. Fig. 2 is an under side view If; of the same detached.
The object of this invention is to prevent sparks from escaping from the smoke-stacks of locomotive and other engines. i
The invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
A represents the cylindrical lower part of a smoke-stack.
B is the flaring upper part or head, and C is the tapered top or cap, which is hinged at oneside to the said part B, and is secured at i its other side' by a spring-catch, D, or other suitable fastening. A sheet, E, of wire-gauze, can be secured to the upper edge of the cap O.
To the upper edge of the flaring head B of the stack is secured by rivets or other suitable means the outer edge of acircular sheet-iron plate, F, through the center of which is formed a circular aperture, G.
His a sheet-iron cone, which is inverted and suspended at a little distance below the plate F byrbrackets I, attached to it and to the said plate F. The base of the cone H is made larger than the aperture G, and said cone is made of such a size that the area of 4o the annular space surrounding the said cone shall be at least equal to the area of the cylindrical part A ofthe stack, so that the draftV will not be obstructed. With this construction the sparks that pass up the stack will strike against the inclined sides of the cone H, will be deflected against the outer part of the plate F and shell B, and will fall back into the lower part of the stack, whence they can' be removed when desired.
If desired, the inner edge of the plate F may be provided with atapering or inwardlyinclined and downwardly projecting ring flange, J, for any sparks that may be carried inward after striking against the plate F to strike against, and thus be prevented from passing out through the opening G.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a spark-arrester, the combination, with the head B, having the cap C hinged to the latter, and covered by a gauze-sheet, E, of the plate F, bolted to an inner annular liange at the upper flared end of the head B, and provided at its center with a deiiector, J, with a lower convergent end, and the inverted cone II, suspended from the said plate by arms I, and having its upper flared end arranged a short distance below the deilector VJ, and having a greater diameter at said end than the lower end of the latter, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
