UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
NICHOLAS H. WILLIAMS, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
CULTIVATO a.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,289, dated November 13, 1883.
' Application filed Jn1y'3, 1883.. (No modem 5:"0 all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS H. WILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of J oliet, in the county of \Vill and State 5 of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica- @1011.
My invention relates to the peculiar mechanism by means of which the shovel or plow of a cultivator is made to assume a position suitable for throwing a furrow in either direction at the will of the operator.
The objec of my invention is to furnish suitable mechanism to deflect or turn the shovel or plow of a cultivator from a direct course and to raise the same or lower it at will, and thus conform to the various wants of agricultnre.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters ofreference indicate like parts wherever used, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a cultivator, showing aside elevation of my invention, Fig. 2 being a top view of the beam broken away from the frame. Referring particularly to said drawings, 00 represents the beam of a cultivator. a is the rocking head, which is attached to said beam c by means of a bolt in such amanner as to allow it to oscillate, or rockforward and backward. g are guide-ways for the purpose of maintaining said rocking head a in position. i
m is the shovel-standard, which is attached to the rocking head a. by means, of the eyes or 7 boxes-c, as shown in Fig. 1, and maybe raised or lowered through said eyes or boxes at will. S is the shovel or plow. D is the slotted arm, which is rigidly attached to said shovel-standard m,"and is also attached to said beam to by means of the bolt D in such a manner as to allow it to revolve upon said bolt D and also to move laterally along the slot in said slotted arm D when desired, as shown in Fig. 2. o" is a rod connectingthe shovel-standardm with the crank c. t is a pin to keep said rod 0 in its proper position. d is a box bolted to'the beam a, through which the crank c is connected with the lever o.
It will be readily seen that by moving the lever 0 forward or backward motion is communicated through the crank c and the rod 0' to the shovel-standard m, and the same, by
reason of the slotted arm D being rigidly attached-thereto, is caused to twist or deflect, and also that by the same lever movement the shovel S is raised orlowered, and thus the object of theinvention accomplished.
Having thus described my invention, that which I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cultivator, the combination, with the beam a, of the shovel-standard m, slotted arm D, rigidly attach ed thereto, and bolt D,whereby a pivotal and a sliding movcment'is permitted upon the bolt D, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a cultivator, the combination of the rocking head a, the guideways g, the slotted arm D, the shovel-standard m, and the beam 7 a, as and for the purpose described.
iIn testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
NICHOLAS H. W'ILLIAMS.
