ONE-HAND PLANE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 288,226, dated November 13, 1883.
Application filed May 21, 1883, (No model.)
To all about it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO G. GLLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Scott, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woocl-\Vo1*l ers Finishing- Tools, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in finishing planes or wood-workers finishing-tools; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the same, whereby the'tool may be used in smoothing or finishing moldings or the like of irregular or curve shape, and it is designed to take the place of spokeshaves, draw-knives, chisels, or other similar tools which cannot be used on circular or curved surfaces of molding, 8m; and the invention consists more particularly in providing the tool with an inclined extension, on which the bit is adjustably secured, said incline being constructed on the body of the tool, opposite the handle portion, by which construction the tool is drawn toward the operator, all as will be hereinafter more fully eX- plained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention,in which 0 Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my tool. Fig. 2 is a planview of the same,
and Fig. 3 is an end view.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A. designates the body of the tool, which is constructed in one piece with the shank a, the end of which is connected to the handle I), by which the tool is operated, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The forward end, a, of the bodythatis, the opposite end to the handle portion-is extended beyond the heeld, and is inclined forward and upward on its inner face, as at e, upon which areadj ustably secured the wed ge-plate f and cuttingbit 5/, that have longitudinal slots in and 2', for the passage of the set-screw j, by means of which the plate and bit are secured to the bodyA.- Near the outerend of the extension aforesaid the same is provided with a screw, a, the point p of which passes through said extension and bears against the under side of the wedgeplate f, whereby the plate and bit may be adjusted, in order to close the throat of the body and throw the bit on different inclinations. One or more of these screws maybe employed, and, if desirable, said screw may be caused to act directly upon the under side of the bit for adjusting said bit to different inclinations, thus dispensing with wedgeplate f, in which case two screws arranged side by side transversely across the body are desirable. Said inclined forward extension 0 is connected to the body and a part thereof by side barsflc k, which extend sufficiently high on either side of the incline and the extreme end thereof, as at Z, to serve as a guideway and retainer for the wedge-plate and bit, and between said side bars, heel, and forward extension is arranged the throat m of the tool.
7 It will be observed from the above description and vby reference to the annexed drawings that the wedge-platef, when adjusted, serves to throw the bit on different inclinations, thereby regulating the cutting-edge with reference to the throat, and the under face of the body being curved from front to rear and convex in cross-section admits of the tool being used on irregular or curved surfaces, as well as permitting the cutting-edge to bite the wood. At the sametime the extension above mentioned serves as a guide for the plane-bit, and also a rest for the same.
By this construction and arrangement of the tool the handle by which it is operated is directly opposite the cutting-bit. Thereby the tool can be used only in drawing it toward the operator, which movement it has been found by practical experience is the only one in which a tool of this class can be used with satisfactory results.
I am awarethat prior tomyinvention planes or finishing-tools for moldings, 820. ,have been constructed with one or more handles, and
when used the same is worked from the operator and not drawn toward him, and in practice it has been found that a tool constructed to be forced from the operator when using the same does not satisfactorily perform the work, and, inview of the above-mentioned finishingtools, I do not claim, broadly, a device of this character; but,
- vided with the inclined extension 0, the combinationtherewith of the slotted wedge-plate 7,in.- I terposed between the bit 9 and the inclined eX- I Having described my invention, What I operatenpon the under side of the Wedge-plate, 10 claim, and desire to secure by'Lette'rs Patent, whereby said plate and bit may be adjusted to is a different inclinations, as shown and described. In a one-hand plane or finishing-tool of the I In testimony whereof I afiFiX my signature in class herein described, having the body A, propresence of two Witnesses.
LORENZO G. GILSON.
