Description

R001 DRAIN Filed NOV. 22. 1954 IN V EN TORS Maw United States Patent ROOF DRAIN Albert A. Baker and Harry L. Rhoades, Jr., Erie, Pm,
assignors to J. A. Zurn Mfg. Co., Erie, Pin, a corporation of Pennsylvania Application November 22, 1954, Serial No. 470,206 2 Claims. (Cl. Ila-166) This invention relates to roof sump adapters.
In previous roof drains wherein it was desired to install a drain in a new roof, it was necessary to provide a hole in the roof and to chamfer the top of the hole to provide a recess the thickness of the flange of the roof drain to be installed in order for the flange to nest therein. Further, with drains made according to prior designs, it was necessary to install the leader pipes to the cup before the roofing job was completed in order to hold the cup in place while the roofing was being installed. In this disclosure, a means is provided of installing the drain in the roof with the top flange of the cup flush with the roof without chamfering the edge of the hole in the roof to provide for thickness of the flange. Also, a means is provided for supporting the body of the drain on the roof before the leader pipes have been installed. The body is locked in place by means of an under deck clamp. This permits the roofer to install the body of the drain and complete the roofing job. At a later date, when the leader pipes have been installed, the hole is cut in the roofing material, the clamping collar is then installed, and the dome set in place.
More specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide a roof drain wherein the body of the drain can be installed in a plain cylindrical hole in a roof without the necessity of providing chamfered edges on the hole.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means for supporting the body of a roof drain independently of any leader pipes thereto prior to installation of piping.
Another object of this invention is to provide a roof drain which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and simple and eflicient to use.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view and adapter; and
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1 having the clamping collar and dome strainer removed.
Now with more specific reference to the drawing, Fig. 1 shows a roof drain cup 1 having a flanged outlet 2 threaded at 3 to receive the threaded end 4 of a leader pipe. The cup 1 has an inner wall 5 defining the internal space of the cup 1. The upper portion 6 of the cup 1 has an outwardly extending flange 7 having an outwardly and upwardly extending tapered portion 8. The flange 7 defines a downwardly facing shoulder portion 9 which has a plurality of circumferentially spaced threaded bores 10 therein. The threaded bores 10 receive the upper threaded ends 11 of stud bolts 12 which extend through holes 13 under a deck clamp 14 and have nuts 15 disposed on the lower end thereof.
partly in cross section of the cup 2,881,921 Patented Apr. 14, 1959 Pce The upper edge of the cup 1 has the inwardly extending lugs 17 which have threaded apertures 18 therein to receive threaded bolts 19 which extend through holes 20 in the upper clamping ring 21. The upper clamping ring 21 has a gravel guard 22 which has circumferentially spaced apertures 23.
A dome shaped strainer 26 is supported on the seat ing portion 27 of the upper clamping ring 21 having a bayonet connection to the inner side of the upper clamping ring 21. An upper clamping collar 30 has a down wardly and inwardly tapering lip 31 which is formed by bending the collar 30 downward in dished shape to receive the upwardly outwardly tapering edge 8 of the flange 7. A circumferential shoulder 32 at the outer edge of the lip 31 positively locates the flange 7. The lower deck clamp 14 is in the shape of a flat plate shaped ring having an aperture 33 therein adapted to encircle the outer surface 34 of the cup 1.
During construction of the roof, an aperture 40 will be formed therein. Then, later, at the convenience of the workmen, the cup 1 may be placed in the aperture 40 of the relatively thick roof structure 41. The upper clamping collar 30 will be disposed in place with the lower surface 43 thereon in engagement with the upper surface of the roof 41. The cup 1 may then be put in place with the flange 7 in engagement with the dished lip portion 31. The under deck clamp 14 will then be put in place with the upper side 45 thereof in engagement with the lower surface 44 of the roof 41. Then the bolts 12 are put through the holes 13 and threadably engaged at 10 with the outwardly extending shoulder 9 of the cup 1. The nuts 15 will then be tightened to clamp the cup 1 in place on the roof 41. Then the flashing 46 may at any time be put in place over the upper edge of the flange 7 and extend continuously over the cup 1 as shown in Fig. 2. Later, a hole can be cut in the flashing 46 over the cup 1 and the edges thereof pressed downwardly over the upper edge of the flange 7 to be clamped in place by the upper clamping ring 21. The bolts 19 will then be tightened in place in their apertures 18 to lock the flashing 46 in place between the upper clamping ring 21 and flange 7. Subsequently, at the convenience of the workmen, the threaded end 4 of the leader pipe may be put in place and the cup 1 will be ready for use.
The foregoing specification sets forth the invention in its preferred practical forms but the structure shown is capable of modification within a range of equivalents without departing from the invention which is to be understood is broadly novel as is commensurate with the appended claims.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
