2 Claims. (Cl. 38-141) This invention relates to an improved support for disposition beneath an ironing board for preventing contact with the fioor of articles being ironed thereon.
The primary object of the invention .is to provide a more practical and efiicient device of this kind which is foldable into fiat and compact form for storage and transportation, which is of simple construction, and is composed of a small number of simple and easily assembled parts.
Another object of the invention is to provide a support of the character indicated, which can be made in attractive, rugged, and serviceable forms at relatively low cost, is easily used, and is highly practical and satisfactory for the purpose intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a support of the present invention, showing in phantom lines the manner in which the support is utilized with a conventional ironing board;
Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the support;
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse section taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary exploded perspective view of leg assembly of the support; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical transverse section taken substantially on the line 6--6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, indicated generally at 10 is a conventional ironing board having a horizontally disposed ironing board member 12 supported by a foldable leg assembly of the tripod type, indicated generally at 14, which includes rear diverging legs 16 and 18 and a forwardly extending leg 20. In parallel underlying relationship relative to the ironing board member 12 is a support 22 of the present invention.
The support 22 comprises a substantially rectangular frame indicated generally at 24, constructed of any suitable material, such as wood, plastic, metal, etc., having elongated parallel longitudinal side members 26 and 28, a straight rear end member 30, suitably secured between rear end portions of the side members 26 and 28, and a preferably arcuate forward end member 32 suitably secured to forward ends of the side members 26 and 28. Extending between and secured to the side members 26 and 28 at a point substantially midway between the ends of the frame 24 is a pair of parallel transverse rods 34 and 36 defining a slot 38 therebetween for reception of the forward leg 20 of the ironing board leg assembly 14.
Extending across the frame 24 between the forward end member 32 and the forward rod 34 is a front panel or grill 40 of a nylon cord or the like, having transverse "ice strands 43 threaded through openings 47 in the- frame side members 26 and 28 and longitudinal strands 45 tied to the rod 34 and threaded through openings in the forward end member 32 of the frame24.
A rear panel or grill 41, similar to the grill 40, involves the rear rod 36, the rear end member 30, and the side members 26 and 28 of the frame 24.
Forward and rear foldable leg assemblies, indicated generally at 42 and 44, which are substantially identical, are provided for supporting the frame 24 on a floor F.
Each of the leg assemblies 42 and 44 includes a pair of transversely aligned journal blocks 46 and 48 suitably secured on the inner sides of the frame side members 26 and 28, as by means of Wood screws 50, at points near to and spaced from the ends of the frame 24. The blocks have bores 52 in axial alignment. The bores 52 rotatably receive therein the ends of a transverse shaft 54, see Figure 4, for example. The shaft 54 extends through bores 56 in the upper ends of a pair of elongated radial legs 58, secured against rotation thereon by means of fasteners, such as nails, 60. The legs 58 are thereby foldable into substantial longitudinal alignment with the side members 25 and 28 of the frame 24, thereby facilitating transportation and storage of the support.
Transverse stop bars 62 extend between and are secured to the blocks 46 and 48 at points between the end members of the frame 24 and related shafts 54, with which the legs 58 engage in longitudinally outwardly angled, over-center positions, as shown in Figure 3, to support the frame 24 above the floor F.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. In a device of the character described, an elongated horizontal frame having spaced side members and end members extending between and secured to the adjacent ends of the side members, a pair of transverse rods spaced longitudinally of the frame and secured to and extending between said side members in the region of the midlength of the frame, panels secured to the frame and extending between the side members, said panels extending between said end members and the adjacent transverse rods, said panels and said transverse rods defining a transversely elongated slot extending between said side members for accommodating an ironing board leg, and leg means on said frame for supporting the frame on and above a supporting surface.
2. In a device of the character described, an elongated horizontal frame having spaced side members and transverse end members extending between and secured to the adjacent ends of the side members, a pair of transverse rods spaced longitudinally of the frame and secured to and extending between said side members in the region of the midlength of the frame, panels secured to the frame and extending between the side members, said panels extending between end members and adjacent transverse rods, said panels and said transverse rods defining a transversely elongated slot extending between said side members for accommodating an ironing board leg, and leg means on said frame for supporting the frame on and above a surface, transverse shafts extending between the frame side members between and longitudinally spaced from the end members and transverse rods, said transverse shafts being journaled at their ends on the frame side members, a pair of radial legs fixed on each of 3 said shafts, and a transverse stop bar alongside of eaeh of said shafts and extending between and secured to the frame side members, said shafts being rotatable to position the pairs of legs lengthwise of the frame in storage position and to position the pairs of legs in depending 5 over-center positions against the stop bars.
