HANDLE FOR FILES ANDOTHER TOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,046, dated November 6, 1883. Application filed September 18, 1863. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosIAH F. FRENoH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Handles 'for Files and other Tools, of which the following is a specification. i e
My invention consists, mainly, of the combination of the tang of a file or other tool and a threaded block permanently attached to the said tang, with ahandle provided with ametal nut adapted to the said block, so that the ham dle may be securely fastened to the tang, all substantially as described hereinafter.
In'the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view, showing my improvedhandle and tang for files and other tools; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 1 2; Fig. 3, a front view of the threaded block attached to the tang; Figs. 4 and 5, modifications of the block, and Fig. 6 a sectional view illustrating a modification of the handle.
Referring toFigs. 1, 2, and 3, A is the tapering tang of a file or other tool; B, the body of the handle, which is made of wood or other available material, an opening extending entirely through the body in the present in stance for receiving the tang A, and a metal tube, D, the latter being internally threaded at one end, and there adapted to form the nut for a threaded block, G, permanently secured to thetang A. The handle is applied to the tang and turned, so that the threaded end of the tube will be screwed into the block until the ferrule 32 of the handle bears firmly against the shoulders m m of the file, the handle being then securely fastened to the file.
It should be stated here that I do not claim, broadly, a threaded block securely fastened to the tang of a file or other tool in combination with ahandle intowhich the block is screwed, for this is shown in the Patent No. 7 7 ,332, granted April 28, 1868, in which, however, the threaded block is screwed directly into the wood, and this forms a very insecure fastening, whereas in my invention a metal nut fixed in the handle is adapted to the threaded block. 1
While I do not desire to restrict myself to any specific mode of securing the threaded block to the tang, Iprefer to form on the latter a tapering thread to accord with a Similar In or-' threaded at the corners only; or it mayhave but two flat sides, or even one, for adaptation to a suitable wrench; or a projection on the block clear of the threaded portion of the same, and indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I,
may be adapted to a wrench; or the block may be slotted to receive the end of a screw-driver,
as in Fig. 4; or a wrench of the character shown in Fig. 5 may be applied to it.
In Fig. 6 the nut for the block is formed by internally threading the end of a metal tube, D, driven into the handle, the block G being secured to the tang near the shoulders m m of the tool, and the closed end of the tube forming an abutment for the tang; but I do not desire toclaim this feature irrespective of the block, for a parallelly-threaded tang adapted to a nut in the handle, and abutting against the end of a metal tube on which the nut is formed, is the subject of another application filed by me August 27,1883, Serial No. 104, 859.
It is immaterial to my invention how the nut is embedded in or attached to the handle, or what kind of a nut is used, providing it be sde constructed that it cannot turn in the han- I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a tang of a file or JOSIAH F. FRENCH.
