(CL 164-112) The present invention relates to a margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and punching mechanism as used for teletyping.
The standard length of a teletyped line is 69 carriage steps, and sometimes 72 carriage steps. On the other the typing of a much longer line. When a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism is operated, it frequently happens that the operator of'the typewriter for- ;gets to adjust the'margin end stop to the length of the teletyped line when the punching device is operated after a normal typing operation.
Consequently, during the punching operation, a line extending the standard length of a teletyped line is punched, and particularly the markmg controlling the line shifting and carriage return of the teletype typewriters is punched after the 69th carriage step so that'the teletype typewriter which is controlled by the punched tape stops at the 69th step of its carriage so that the additional impulses produce a typing on the same spot of the carriage until the impulses'for line shifting and carriage return arrive.
In accordance with the arrangement according to the known art, it is necessary that theoperator adjust the margin end stop to the length of a teletyped line, that is to 69 carriage steps or 72 carriage steps, every time the punching mechanism is coupled to the typewriter keyboard.
It is one object of the present invention to provide a margin stop arrangement for acombined"typewriter-and teletyping mechanismin which operation of the punching mechanism is only possible when the machine is adjusted to a length of line corresponding to a standard teletype line.
It is another object of the present invention to provide in'a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism a margin stop arrangement by which the'carriage is automatically limited to the number of steps required for teletyping whenever the mechanism is shifted to a teletyping operation.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a foolproof arrangement preventing punching of control markings in a teletype tape by which the teletype machine would be improperly operated.
Another object of the present invention is a margin stop arrangement by which an intermediate margin stop is provided between two standard margin end stops and cooperates with one of the end stops for limiting carriage movement to a distance corresponding to a special selected length of line. i
A further object of the present invention is the provision oftwo margin end stops which are connected for simultaneous movement along the carriage.
-Another object of the present invention is to prevent actuation-of a margin release while a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism is operated to punch a tape.
With these objects in view, the present invention mainly atent consists in a margin stop arrangement for a typewriter and teletype mechanism'which comprises, in combination,
two margin'end stops mounted on a supporting bar of a typewritericarriage, astationary stop member cooperating 5 with the margin 'end'stops, an'interrnediate margin stop movable to and from an operativeposition for'engaging' the stationary stop member during movement of the carriage, an operating me'ansformoving the intermediate margin stop to and from the operative position thereof, :and for holdingthe intermediatemargin stop so that the typewriter carriage moves only through adistance corresponding tothedistance between the intermediate margin stop and oneof'the marginend stops, such distance preferably corresponding to the length of a teletyped line which'is recorded by key operation, .preferablyby-punch- .ing a tape.
- In accordance with .a preferred embodimentof the present invention, the combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism includes means for punching :a control 0 tape, and coupling means for connecting the typewriter .mechanism with the punching device. The operating means include afirstlinkageconnected to the coupling .means and .asecond linkage connected to the intermediate margin stop, as well as a manually operated memher so thatshifting of the couplingimeans to a position .in which the punching device becomes operative -will also result in shifting of theintermediate margin stop .toits operative position wherebythe typewriter carriage is limited to movement through a distance corresponding to-the length of a teletype line, that is preferably-6 9 carriage steps.
However, :the intermediate margin stop is also highly advantageous for standard typewriters sincethe arrangement permits the typing'of diiferent texts with lines of different lengths without requiring extensive adjustment ofthe margin stop.
In order to prevent a release of the stationary stop memberduring operation'ofthe machine as apunching device, the margin release lever is preferably blockedzby 40 .a blockingportion of the operating means by which the ,punchingdevice and the intermediate margin stop are .rendered operative. p
In a preferred embodiment of .the present invention, a connecting member connects one of the margin end stops-to the intermediate margin stop, so that the lastmentioned two stopsrnayabe simultaneously moved along :the supporting bar ofthe typewriter carriage.

.Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to;-Figs. l and 2, a punching device 6 is connected to a coupling means 5 which includes a couplingmember .4 movable between a coupled position shown in Fig. 2 and a disconnected position shown in Fig. l. The cou- :pling member'4 is pivotally connected by :a pin -19 to a double-armed lever 3. One end of leyerfiS-is pivotally mounted by a pin on a bracket 18 which is fixed to the of the arrangement frame of the machine. The other end of the lever 3 is connected by a pin 17 to a connecting rod 2 whose other end is pivotally connected by pin 16 to a finger engaging lever 1 supported by pin 15 on a fixed bracket 14. When lever 1 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the coupling means is disconnected and held in disconnected position since lever 1 is in a dead-center position. When lever 1 is shifted in direction of the arrow in Fig. l to its other dead-center position shown in Fig. 2, the coupling means 5 is shifted to coupling position as shown in Fig. 2, and held in such position until the lever 1 is again moved to the position of Fig. 1 in direction of the arrow in Fig. 2.
As best seen in Figs. 3 and 4, two margin end stops 32 and 33 are mounted at the end of a supporting bar 27 which is secured to the typewriter carriage. The margin end stops 32 and 33 can be adjusted along the length of the supporting bar 27 by releasing the respective spring loaded catch 32a. Each margin end stop has a projecting abutment 45 cooperating with the stationary stop member 47 during movement of the carriage. Thereby, carriage movement is limited in a conventional manner to a distance corresponding to the spacing between the margin end stop 32 and 33.
In accordance with the present invention, an intermediate margin stop, generally indicated by the reference numeral 10, is mounted on the supporting bar 27 intermediate the margin end stop 32 and 33.
The intermediate margin stop includes a slide member 34 which is slidably mounted on the supporting bar 27, a stop member 36 which is pivotally mounted on the slide member 34 by means of a pin 35, and a leaf spring 40 which is secured by screws 39 to the slide member 34. Spring 40 engages a projection 38 on the pivoted stop member 36 and urges stop member 36 in the inoperative position illustrated in Fig. 3 in which the stop 46 is retracted and inoperative. A projection 37 on stop member 36 limits the movement of the stop member 36 under the action of spring 40. If the pivoted stop member is moved from the position shown in Fig. 3 into the blocking position shown in Fig. 2 by the member 9, which will be described hereinafter in greater detail, the stop 46 is advanced to an operative position in which it engages the stationary stop member 47 during movement of the carriage before the margin end stop 33 can become operative. On the other hand when the stop member is in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 1, the carriage will move on beyond the intermediate margin stop 10 until it is blocked at the end of a normal typewritten line by margin end stop 33.

In accordance with the present invention, the inter-' mediate margin stop 10 must be rendered operative whenever the coupling means 5 couples the typewriter mechanism to the punching device-6 by which a control tape for teletype mechanism is marked. A linkage is 'slide member 34 of the; intermediate margin st0p10.
In one posiprovided for this purpose and includes a bell-crank lever ing bar 8. Linking bar 8 is provided with elongated slots 23 receiving guide pins 24 which are mounted on a stationary bracket 14. Consequently shifting of the connecting bar 2 will result in turning of lever 7 and in raising of linking bar 8. Linking bar 8 carries at the end a head 31 which engages an elongated member 9 extending parallel to the supporting bar 27. Member 9 is pivoted on a shaft 25 for pivotal movement about a longitudinal axis, and is urged against head 31 of the linking bar 8 by a spring 29 which is secured to the side wall 26 of the machine by an attaching member 30.
As clearly shown in the drawing, the projection 41 of the pivoted stop member 36 engages the actuator bar 9 under the action of spring 40. Normally, the apparatus is in the position shown in Fig. 1, but when the lever 1 is shifted to the position 2, the linking bar 8 is raised through lever 7 and connecting rod 2, and the actuator bar 9 is pivoted and holds the stop member 36 in the position of Fig. 2 in which the stop 46 cooperates with the stationary stop member 47.
The stationary stop member 47 is shiftable in a conventional manner to a release position in which it is located out of the path of the stops 45 and 46. The stop member 47 is shifted to release position by a key lever 13'which is pivotally mounted at 12 and has a key button. The means connecting the key lever 13 with the stop member 47 are not illustrated in the drawing, since this arrangement is well-known.
The connecting rod 2 has a blocking projection 11 which is associated with the key lever 13. In the position of Fig. 2 in which the punching device 6 is coupled to thekeyboard of the typewriter, the blocking projection 11 is located in the path of the key lever 13 so that the margin release cannot be operated. In the position of Fig. l which corresponds to the normal operational condition of the typewriter in which the intermediate margin stop and the punching device are inoperative, the block'- ing projection 11 is retracted, and the margin release can be freely operated by the key lever 13.
The key lever 13 as well as the finger engaging lever 1 are both located at the front of the machine and constitute part of its keyboard arrangement.
The margin stop arrangement according to the present invention operates in the following manner:
In the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, normal typewriting operations are carried out. The manually operated member 1, 2 is securely held in a position in which the coupling means 5 is disconnected, and the actuator bar 9 is retracted by the spring 29 so that the spring 40 holds the pivoted stop member 36 of the intermediate margin stop 10 in a retracted position in which the stop 46 passes the stop member 47 during the carriage movement. Consequently the carriage moves between end positions defined by the stop 45 of the margin end stop 32 and 33.
When the manually operated means 1, 2 are shifted to the position shown in Fig. 2, the coupling means 5 is connected, and consequently the punching device 6 becomes operative and actuation of the typewriter mechanism will result in punching of a control tape for controlling typewriters. At'the same time, the actuator bar 9 is shifted through the linkage 7, 8, and moves the stop member 36 of the intermediate margin stop 10 to its operative position shown in Figs. 2 and 4. In this position the stop member 47 engages the stop 46 during movement of the carriage so that the stop end member 33 is rendered inoperative.
Due to the fact that the margin stop connecting member 42 determines a distance between the stops 45 and 46 which corresponds to the desired lengths of a teletyped line, that is 69 carriage steps or 72 carriage steps, respectively, the punching device 6 punches the tape always accurately in such a manner that the carriage of a controlled teletype machine is properly returned after 69 carriage steps, or 72 carriage steps, respectively.
In order to prevent the operator erroneously operating the margin release by depressing the key lever 13, the
esteem From the above description of the construction operation of the margin stop arrangement according to the present invention, it will be understod that the elements '1, 2,3, 7, 8, and 9 constitute operating means for moving the intermediate margin stop to operative position and for simultaneously moving the coupling means to coupling position for operating thepunching device.
The margin stop arrangement according to the present invention may also be advantageously used for typewriters which are not provided with a punching device. In this event, the elements 3, 4, 5, 6, 17, 18 and 19 can be omitted.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of margin stop arrangements differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a margin stop arrangement for auto- :tnatically maintaining the length of a teletyped line in a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism including a punching device, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
"Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for van' o'usapplications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are itnended to be comprehended within the meaning and range ofequivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a machine including type levers and recording means, and a key board composed of keys for operating the type levers and recording means, a margin stop arrangement comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof; a stationary stop member cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops movable to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; and operating means for moving said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and one of said margin end stops, said operating means including a key means located in the region of said key board and controlling the movement of said intermediate margin stop.

3. A margin stop arrangement comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar;
two margin end stops mountedon said bar in the region of the ends thereof; a stationary stop member movable between a releasing position and a blocking position cooperating with said margin end stop for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions; marginrelease means including a first manually operated membermovable to and from an operative position for shifting said stationary stop member to said release position; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops movable to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member in blocking position during movement'of said carriage; and
operating means for moving said 'intermediatema'rgin "stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop 'and one of said margin end stops, said operating means including a second manually wherein said first and second manually operated-members are located forwardly of said typewriter car'riageand adapted to be arranged in the region of a keyboard associated with the typewriter carriage.
5. A margin stop arrangement comprising, in cornbination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof, and being adjustable along the length' of said supporting bar; a stationary stop member movable between a release position and a blocking position cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions; margin release means including a first manually operated member movable to and from an operative position for moving said stationary stop member to said release position; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said supporting'bar intermediate said end stops and being movable along said bar, said intermediate margin stop being movable in a transverse direction to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member in blocking position during movement of said carriage; a margin stop connecting member connecting one of said margin end stops with said intermediate margin stop -at a distance corresponding to the length of a selected line, and permitting simultaneous movement of said one 'margin end stop and of said intermediate margin stop along said supporting bar while maintaining said distance; and operating means for'moving said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance correspondingto' the length of'said'selected line,
' 7 said operating means including a second manually operated member located in the path of said first manually operated means to said operative position when said operating means holds said intermediate margin stop in its operative position whereby release of said one margin 'end stop is prevented while said intermediate margin stop .is in said operative position.
6. A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof; a stationary stop member cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions corresponding to a typewritten line; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops and being spaced from one of said margin end stops a selected distance corresponding to a teletyped line, said intermediate margin stop being movable to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; coupling means for coupling the typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a recording device; and operating means for moving said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and said one of said margin end stops for preventing movement of the carriage through a distance exceeding the length of a teletyped line, said operating means including means for actuating said coupling means for coupling said typewriter and teletyping mechanism to the recording device while said intermediate margin stop is in said operative position.
7. A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof, at least one of said margin end stops being movable along said bar; a stationary stop member cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions corresponding to a typewritten line; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops movable along said bar, said intermediate margin stop being movable in a transverse direction to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; coupling means for coupling the typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a recording device; a margin stop connecting member connecting said one margin end stop and said intermediate margin stop for movement together with each other along said supporting bar, said margin stop connecting member spacing said one margin end stop and said intermediate margin stop a selected distance corresponding to a teletyped line; and operating means for moving said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and said one of said margin end stops for preventing movement of the carriage through a distance exceeding the length of a teletyped line, said operating means including means for actuating said coupling means for coupling said typewriter and teletyping mechanism to the recording device while said intermediate margin stop is in said operative position. A margin stop arrangement as set forth in claim 7 and including adjustable means for securing said margin stop connecting member in at least two positions to one of the associated stops for adjusting the distance between said one margin end stop and said intermediate margin stop to the length of another selected teletyped line.
9 A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, atypewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops' mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof; a stationary stop member cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions corresponding to a typewritten line; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops andbeing spaced from one of said margin end stops a selected distance corresponding to a teletyped line, said intermediate margin stop being movable to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during 'movement of said carriage; coupling means for coupling the typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a punching device, said coupling means being movable between a coupled position and a disconnected position; and operating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop for simultaneously moving said coupling means to and from said coupling position and said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position as long as said coupling means is in said coupling position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and said one of said margin end stops so that said car riage moves through a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line while the punching device is operative.
10. A margin stop arrangement for a combined type,- writer and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof, at least one of said margin end stops being movable along said bar; a stationary stop member cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions corresponding to a typewritten line; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops movable along said bar, said intermediate margin stop being movable in a transverse direction to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; coupling means for coupling the typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a punching device, said coupling means being movable between a coupled position and a disconnected'position; and operating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop for simultaneously moving said coupling means to and from said coupling position and said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position as long as said coupling means is in said coupling position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and said one of said margin end stops and a-margin stop connecting member connecting said inter} mediate margin stop and said one margin end stop at a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line so that said carriage moves through a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line while the punching device is operative.
11. A margin stop arrangement as set forth in claim 10 and including adjustable means for securing said margin stop connecting member in at least two positions to one of the associated stops for adjusting the distance between said one margin end stop and said intermediate margin stop to the length of another selected teletyped line.

A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof, at least one of said margin end stops being movable along said bar; a stationary stop member cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter'carriage in two end positions corresponding toa typewritten line; an intermediate margin stop mounted.onsaid'barintermediate said margin end stopsimovable along said bar, said intermediate margin stop being movable in a transverse direction to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; coupling means for coupling the typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a punching device, said coupling means being movable between a coupled position and a disconnected position; and operating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop for simultaneously moving said coupling means to and from said coupling position and said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position as long as said coupling means is in said coupling position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and said one of said margin end stops and a margin stop connecting member connecting said intermediate margin stop and said one margin end stop at a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line so thatsaid carriage moves through a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line while the punching device is operative, said operating means including a manually operated member, and a first linkage connecting said manually operated member to said coupling means, and a second linkage connecting said manually operated member to said intermediate margin stop.

A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof, at least one of said margin end stops being movable along said bar; a stationary stop member movable between released position and a'blocking position cooperating with said margin end stop for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions corresponding to the typewritten line; margin release means movable to and from an operativeposition for moving said stationary stop member to and from said release position; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops movable along said bar, saidintermediate margin stop being movable in a transverse direction to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; coupling means for coupling the typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a punching device, said coupling means being movable between a coupled position and a disconnected position; and operating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop for simultaneously moving :said coupling means to and from said coupling position and said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position as long as said coupling means is in said coupling position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and said one of said margin end stops so that said carriage moves through -a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line while the punching device is operative, said operating means including a manually operated member, and a first linkage connecting said manually operated member to said coupling means, and a second linkage connecting said manually operated member to said intermediate margin stop, said manually operated member including a blocking portion located in the path of movement of said margin release means to said operative position of the same when said coupling means is in said coupling position.

A margin stop arrangement as set forthin claim 13 lever and a"k'ey thereomsaid blocking portion beifiglocated in the path of'said' key lever while'said coupling. means -is in 'saidcoupling ::osition, said key and ke'y lever'being adapted to be located in the region ofthe keyboard of the combined typewriter and teletyping'mec'hanism, and said manually operated member of'said operating means being located adjacent said key lever and key.
15. A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, incombination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; two margin end stops mounted on said bar in -the-region of the ends thereof; a stationary stop member-cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions corresponding to a' typewritten line; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops and being spaced from one of said margin end stops at selected-distance corresponding to a teletyped line, said intermediate margin stop being movable to and from an operativepo'sition for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; coupling means for couplingt-he typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a punching device, said coupling means being movable between a coupled position and a disconnected position; and operating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop for simultaneously moving said coupling means to and from said coupling position and said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative:
position, and for holding said intermediate marginstop-in: said operative position as long as said coupling means is: in said coupling position so that said typewriter carriagemoves only through a distance corresponding to the dis-- tance between said intermediate margin stop and said one: of said margin end stops so that said carriage moves:
through a distance corresponding to the length of a tele--.

operating means including a manually operated member, and a first linkage connecting said manually operated member to said coupling means, and a second linkage: connecting said manually operated member to said inter-- mediate margin stop.
16. A margin stop arrangement as set forthin claim 15 wherein said manually operated member includesa finger engaginglever, and a connecting rod pivotally connected to said finger engaging lever; wherein said first linkage,
includes a pivoted lever connecting said connecting rod with said coupling means; wherein said second linkage includes a pivoted lever means pivotally connected to said. connecting rod at one end thereof; and a linking bar pivotally connected to the other end of said lever means,
and a pivotally mounted actuator bar extending parallel,
to said supporting bar and being pivoted by said linking bar upon operation of said finger engaging member, said actuator bar slidably engaging said intermediate'margin stop for shifting the same to said operative position thereof; and including spring means for urging said intermediate margin "stop out of said operative position thereof'and into an inoperative position retracted from said stationary stop. member.
17. A margin stop arrangement as set forth in claim 15: wherein said intermediate margin stop includes a slide member slidably guided on said supporting bar along the length thereof, a stop member pivotally mounted on said slide member for movement about an axis transverse to said supporting bar between an inoperative position retracted from said stationary stop member and an operative position for-engaging said stop member during movement of said carriage, and a spring mounted on said slide memher and engaging said pivoted stop member for urging the same to said retracted position, and wherein said 1 second linkage includes an actuating member engaging said pivoted stop member for holding the same in said operative position while said operating means are in said wherein said margin releasemeans includes a pivoted key operative position thereof.
18. A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a supporting bar; twomargin end stops mounted on said bar in the region of the ends thereof; a stationary stop member cooperating with said margin end stops for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions corresponding to' a typewritten line; an intermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stop and being movable to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; a margin stop connecting member having the ends thereof secured to one of said margin end stops and to said intermediate margin stop, respectively, for spacing said last-mentioned stop a selected distance corresponding to a teletyped line; coupling means for coupling the typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a punching device, said coupling means being movable between a coupled position and a disconnected position; and op erating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop for simultaneously moving said coupling means to and from said coupling position and said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position as long as said coupling means is in said coupling position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and said one of said margin end stops so that said carriage m'oves through a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line while the punching device is operative, said operating means including a manually operated member, and a first linkage connecting said manually operated member to said coupling means, and a second linkage connecting said manually operated member to said intermediate margin stop.
19. ,A margin stop arrangement for a combined type nected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop; and manually operated means for holding said member of said operating means in a first position in which said coupling means is in its coupling position and in which said intermediate margin stop is effective, and a second position in which said coupling means is in said disconnected position and in which said intermediate margin stop is inoperative.
20. A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a pair of margin end stops, and an intermediate margin stop located between said margin end stops, said intermediate margin stop being spaced from one of said end stops a distance 7 corresponding to the length of a teletyped line; coupling means for coupling said typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a recording device, said coupling means being movable between a coupling position and a disconnected position; operating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop; and manpling means is in said disconnected position and in which said intermediate margin stop is inoperative.
21. A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a pair of margin end stops, and an intermediate margin stop located between said margin end stops, said intermediate margin stop being spaced from one of said end stopsa distance :corresponding to the length of a teletyped line; coupling means for coupling said typewriter and teletyping mechanism to arecording device, said coupling means being movable between a coupling position and a disconnected position; operating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop; and manually operated means for holding said operating means in a first position in which said coupling means is in its coupling position and in which said intermediate margin stop is effective, and a second position in which said coupling means is in said disconnected position.

A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a pair of margin end stops, and an intermediate margin stop located between said margin end stops, said intermediate margin stop being spaced from one of said end stops a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line; elongated supporting means supporting said margin stops for movement along said typewriter carriage; connecting means connecting one of said margin end stops with said intermediate margin stop for simultaneous movement along said elongated supporting means; coupling means for coupling said typewriter and teletyping mechanism to a' punching device, said coupling means being movable between a coupling position and a disconnected position; an operating means including a member connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop; and manually operated means for holding said member of said operating means in a first position in which said coupling means is in its coupling position and in which said intermediate margin stop is effective, and a second position in which said coupling means is in said disconnected position and in which said intermediate margin stop is inoperative.

A margin stop arrangement for a combined typewriter and teletyping mechanism and comprising, in combination, a typewriter carriage having a pair of margin end stops, and an intermediate margin stop located between said margin end stops, said intermediate margin stop being spaced from one of said end stops ,a distance corresponding to the length of a teletyped line; elongated supporting means supporting said margin'stops for movement along said typewriter carriage; connecting means connecting one of said margin end stops with said intermediate margin stop for simultaneous movement along said elongated supporting means; coupling means for coupling said typewriter and teletyping mechav nism'to a recording device, said coupling means being movable between a coupling position and a disconnected position; operating means connected to said coupling means and to said intermediate margin stop; and manually operated means for holding said operating means, in a first position in which said coupling means is in its coupling position and in which said intermediate margin stop is effective, and a second position in which said region of the ends thereof, at least one of said margin end stops being movable along said bar; a stationary stop member cooperating with said margin end stop for arresting said typewriter carriage in two end positions .cOrresponding to a typewritten line; margin release means for moving said stationary stop member to a release position retracted from the path of said margin end stops; a manually operated member movable to and from an operative position for actuating said margin release means;
ianintermediate margin stop mounted on said bar intermediate said margin end stops movable along said bar, said intermediate margin stop being movable in a transverse direction to and from an operative position for engaging said stationary stop member during movement of said carriage; a margin stop connecting member connecting said one margin end stop and said intermediate margin stop for movement together with each other along said supporting bar said margin stop connecting member spacing said one margin end stop and said intermediate margin stop a selected distance corresponding to a teletyped line; and operating means for moving said intermediate margin stop to and from said operative position, and for holding said intermediate margin stop in said operative position so that said typewriter carriage moves only through a distance corresponding to the distance between said intermediate margin stop and said one of said margin end stops for preventing movement of the carriage through a distance exceeding the length of a teletyped line, said operating means including a blocking member located in the path of said margin release means to said operative position thereof While said intermediate margin stop is in said operative position whereby release of said stationary stop member is prevented while said intermediate margin stop is in the operative position thereof.
