UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
. NATHAN H. DAvIs, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR orv ONE- THIRD TO LEWIS o. GRATZ, or SAME PLACE. I A
CAR-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 287,638, dated October 30, 1883.
I Application filed June 20, 1883. (No model.)
, cation and accompanying drawings, in'which .Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car-spring embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof in line as 0, Fig. 1. Fig. 3
- is a top view thereof. Fig. 4 is a bottom view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a car-spring formed of tapering form, or form increasing in thickwith a .nut, .E, which occupies a recess on the. Within the spring A 35 ness from beginning to end, the same being coiled, wherebythe greatest thickness of the spring is at the bottom, the thin part being consequently at top, or vice versa.
The spring as thus constructed is fitted bein position by a bolt, 7 0, whose head occupies the socket D, which depends centrally from the follower, and whose threaded end engages lower face of the base. is inclosed a spring of 1 similar tapering construction, the coil or pitch thereof being in reverse order. 7
It will be seen that owing to the formation of the spring A the same has resiliency of dif ferent degrees, so that when the load is normal the'lighter parts of the spring are in servfor the purpose set forth.
possesses easy-rid Owing to the employment of the two taperlng sprlngs coiled in reverse order and inclosed one within the other, a powerful, easyriding, uniform, and well-steadied spring is produced, this provision obviating the emof an exterior wall and an interior ployment guide.
The socket or cup D is extended above the' top plate or follower, and thusadapted to enter an opening in the bolster, thus serving to connect the bolster and spring and prevent the latter from shifting. The cup D is also made separate from the follower, and has an: gular sides, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 3, and sets in an angular opening centrally in the follower, so as to be prevented from rotat- 1ng. The opening of the cup is also angular, and the head of the bolt Ocoincidestherewith, by which provision .the bolt and cup are prevented from turning, theopening in the bottom recess being also angular to accord with the nut E, (see Fig. 4,) whereby the nut -.1s prevented from turning, the bolt thus always retaining its position, connecting the base and follower. I A
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is tween the base B and follower vB, and retained 7 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.,
2. A spring formed of a coil tapering from end to end, an inclosed coil tapering from end to end, the coils being of reversed pitch, a recessed base, a follower with a central opening, a separable cupv non-rotatingly fitted in said opening, and a non-rotating bolt and nut, combined and operating substantially as and N.
