My invention has relation to car-axle boxes, and vhas fo its object to exclude dust and dirt from the b@ x; to oil the journal and bearing without using packing on the back of the box, 3o waste-pumps, chains, or other like appliances; to prevent breakage or undue wear of the box or its parts by the end-thrustofthe axle, and to provide a springv catch or lockibr the axlebox lid, *to the accomplishment oi' which my invention accordingly consists of, first, the provision. of emcllar permanently secured to? the axle, which has an annular groove or cha1n- I ber in its forward or outer face, and subscrves the purposes of a dust-excluder and oiling 'de- 4o vice, and prevents the end-thrust of the axle; second, to the provision of acar-axle box-made in two sections, the inner one of which cntains the oil-bearing 4for the journal, and to which is attached the box-lid; third, to the provisionof a box, a collar on the axle, and an interposedpackingor gasket between the4 front face of the collar and the axle box; fourth, to the provision of a lid havingaspring catch or'rlock, as hereinafterl more specifically 5o described, whereby the lid is automatically locked or sccurcdiu-its om-uml posiif )n on the box to close the same, and may be readiiy unf: fastened to obtain accessl thereto, and, fth, to the novel combination, construction, and

The latter' may be formed-with lugs J J or ribs K K, for attachment of the box to the truck or equalizing-bar thereof. When the ribs K K are used, the sections 1B and C are secured together by means of screws or bolts l; k, as plainly shown in Fig. 10. The oil for the bearing` and journal is placed or poured into the sccti on Il, from whence it ows to the chamber or annular recess in collar F, and as the 'latter revolves with the axle the oil is carried up by said collar and falls upon the end o of bearing,r G. To provide. for the proper lubrication of the `journal, the bearing vGr is recessed at g', and provided with openings g2, as shown in Figs. l and 7, so that as the oil from the collar F ilews on the end f/ of said bearing it passes to the .recess g, and thence through the openings f/'l to the journal.
