UNITED STATES APATENT EEICE.
WILLIAM H. LEONARD, oE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE-HYDRANT.
i SPECIFICATION forming party of Letters Patent No. 287,554,`dated October 30, 1883. y
Application filed May 24, 1883. (No model.)
' To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain -new and useful Improvements in Fire-Hydrants, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to lire-hydrants; and the improvement consists in providing means whereby a full flow of water, free from any obstruction either of the valve-rod or from the mechanism of the valve itself, is secured.
In the accompany-ing drawings, in which similar lettersof reference indicate like parts, Figure l shows an elevation of my improved nre-hydrant. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, showing the hydrant open and the water passing through inthe direction indicated by the arrows.
A A represent the outer casing of the hydrant; B B, a movable water-way inside the outer casing; C, ascrew surrounding the water-way and secured thereto. The screw C Vmay be integral with the water-way B, or atbeveled cog-wheel surrounding the screw G- and working into and with it.
E is another beveled cog-wheel gearing into the wheel D; b, the bearing of the wheel D. This bearing passes through the outside casingof the hydrant, and on the` outer end thereof is square, so that a wrench or similar device may be iitted thereto. F is a water-supply pipe connecting with the hydrant. H is a valve-seat secured into the lower part of the outer casing A, and surrounding the movable water-way. K is a valve on the end of the movable waterway. c is a small .opening at the bottom of the movable water-way, to allow the water remaining in the water-way after the hydrant is closed to escape land pass through the opening c in the outer casing into the ground. d is a feather strip on one side of the lower end of the water-wayV and passing'thr'ough a corresponding slot in the valve-seat, and thus preventingthe y tion to the wheel D,which in turn operates on the screw C, thus raising the waterway B until the valve K is brought up to the valveseat II, when the water is securely cut off, any water remaining in said water-wayfpassing off through the openings c c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United Y States Letters Patent, is-
f l. In a Iire-plug, the movable water-way B, provided with the screw C, in combination with the beveled cog-wheels D and E, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
2. In a nre-hydrant, the combination of thev supply-pipe F and casing A` with the movable.
water-way B, provided with an opening near the bottom and having below the opening an extended flange forming the valve K on its upper face, the valve-seat located above the supply-pipe F, and means for raising and lowering the water-way, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix. my signature in presence of two witnesses.
`WILLIAM H. LEONARD. Vitnesses:
