DISPENSER FOR BOBBY-PINS AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 14. 1955 Y 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ,azziw 7 57K /4 TTQE/Vfy United States P t r DISPENSER FOR BOBBY-PINS AND THE LIKE John George Karasevich, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Application December 14, 1955, Serial No. 553,148
4 Claims. (Cl. 1321) The invention relates to a dispenser for Bobbie pins and the like, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form a part of the same.
The invention consists essentially of the novel features desired distance apart for placement of the pin in the hair, causing it to automatically close when positioned to the hair; to furnish a dispenser in which a number of Bobbie pinsmay be stored in their ordinarily closed condition and which automatically ejects a single pin in proper open condition for placement in the hair,
closing the same when in place; to provide aBobbie pin dispenser of a compactness enabling-it to be easily and handily carried in a purse or handbag; to eliminate the necessity of personal handling of Bobbie pins when placing them in the hair, thus avoiding loss of time and annoyance caused by opening and closing the pin with the fingers or nails; to construct'a Bobbie pindispe'nser consisting of comparatively few mechanical components,
one adapted for manufacture in a variety of suitable materials and that is simple in its operation; and generally to providea dispenser for Bobbie pins and the like that is attractive in appearance and efiicient for its purpose.
In the drawings:
' Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dispenser.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the dispenser having the lid open and showing the compartment for the pins. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the flanged base-plate of the dispenser and illustrating the operating lever mounted therein. l p
Figure 4 is a'longitudinal sectional view as taken along the line 44 in Figure 1. V I
Figure 5 is an enlarged'fragmentary detail, in perspective, showing the manner in which the free'ends of the Bobbie pin are spread as it is being ejected from the case. H
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective detail showing the manner in which the Bobbie pin is ejected from the dispenser in its spread'position.
Figure 7 is a perspective detail of the pressure bar.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary perspective detail of the pin supporting member and illustrating the pins mounted thereon. i i
Like numerals of reference: indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
Referring to the drawings;.thei'dispenser, as; indicated by the numeral 10, consists of a base plate having an elongated portion 11 at one end and an enlarged portion 12 at the other end, the two end portions being joined together by a narrow neck portion 13.
Th b P s r qv w th fla e 14 ex en in around its contour with the exception of the open recess 15 or cut out which is formed by the neck and end portions.
The cover plate 16 is similarly shaped as the base plate but does not necessarily need to have the flange and this cover plate is secured to the base plate ,by the screws or other fastening means 17. In this manner the base plate and the cover plate form the handle 18 and the pin ejection compartment 19.
These plates may be made of any suitable material,
such as plastic, metal or the like and which may be easily molded, pressed or otherwise fashioned to form the comparatively narrow handle and the wider and outwardly tapered pin ejection compartment.
A manually operated pressure rod or lever 20 has its inner end portion contained in the handle 18 and is provided with a slot 21 located at its inner or left extremity and which is engaged by the roller pin 22 and held under spring tension such as a sear spring 23.
The pressure spring lever projects fromwithin'the handle 18 across the opening or recess 15 and into the pin ejection compartment 19 at a slight outward or upward angle, the inner end walls of the handle and the pin ejection compartment being provided with apex tures or slots permitting the lever free movement when pressed on. e
The pressure rod is provided with a finger saddle 24 and which is so located as to be moved with the rod in and out of the opening or recess 15 of the dispenser and the ejection or piston 25 is firmly secured to the lever at the levers right extremity.
The Bobbie pin compartment 26' is formed on the cover plate 16 above the location of the ejection pin compart-,
ment 19' and is provided with the end walls 27 .and 28 and the side walls 29 and-30. These walls may be can: tiguous with one another and have outer flaring end recesses 31 and 32' that are parallel to one another and form an ejector or piston chamber and a pin ejection chamber, the latter having the ejection opening 33 for the Bobbie pin,
The ejector guide rail 34 is formed adjacent to the end of the pin compartment and leaving a spacebetween itself and the end wall 28 of the pin compartment so' as to form a space for the fixed spring 34A and is in direct alignment with the ejection opening 33 for the Bobbie pin. The ejector guide rail terminates short of t the sidewall 30 and its free end is in contact with the l drawn back to its normal position, through the manual fixed spring 34A. The purpose of the fixed spring is to act as a pressure guide for the rail so as to aid in guiding the pin into the ejection opening. After the pin has been ejected, theejector or piston is automatically release of the rod or lever 20 and which is brought to its normal position by the spring 23." The pressure against the spring 34A is then diminished, allowing the spring to give 'sufiicient resilient contact with the free end of the guide rail '34 so as to keep the same in align ment with the pin ejection opening. Y Y
The ejector member or piston 25 has a curled lip portion 35 that engages the underside of the ejector guide rail and overlaps the exposed edge thereof and is slidable therealong. The underside 36 of the ejector member forms the engagement and pressure means for ejecting the Bobbie pins 37 through the ejection opening33, where the pinspreader block 38 projects from the free arcuate end of the fixed spring.
The Bobbie pin compartment is provided with a hinged lid 42 having a suitable type latch or catch 43 for locking the lid to the compartment and has also the slot 43 along one side for removing the card supporting the pins from the compartment.
Access to the interior of the Bobbie pin compartment and the pin ejection portion is by lifting the lid 42, placing a card of Bobbie pins within the compartment and causing the pins to be engaged by the pin guide rod 41, removing the card and thus leave the pins in their guided position within the compartment.
Due to the spring pressure on the pressure bar the pins are kept under constant abutting contact with one another and always having the outermost pin in abutting contact with the inner surface of the guide rail so that each pin in succession will be located below the under surface of the ejector or piston 25 which engages with the guide rail 34 and acts as the means for ejecting the pin out through the pin ejection opening.
In using the dispenser, the person holds the unit to the portion of the head of hair to which they wish a Bobbie pin to engage, pressing on the finger saddle to move the lever, which being so mounted on the bearing or roller pin as to be given axial movement, permits the ejector member .to move directly forward along the guide rail and force the individual Bobbie pin forward or across the pin compartment until the free ends of the Bobbie pin contacts the pin spreader block which is extended to the centre of the path by means of the spring to which it is fixedly secured. The forward movement of the Bobbie pin against the spreader block causes the same to open apart the prongs of the pin as it is forced along the guide rail towards the pin outlet where it emerges to contact the persons hair, the pin being now opened by the finger. As the pin is placed in position in the hair, the person releases pressure on the lever, the same being actuated by the lever spring to automatically move backwards and draw the ejector member back from the Bobbie pin and this coincidently allows the fixed spring and the pin spreader block to return to their normal position until the pin is brought back into position and ready for ejecting another pin when required.
It is of course understood that ramifications and modifications may be made without departing from the essential features of the invention as described and illustrated hereinabove;
