Grierson, Barrow-in-Furness, England Application July 31, 1956, Serial No. 601,196 Claims priority, application Great Britain August 8, 1955 2 Claims. (Cl. 164-36) The present invention relates to a portable sheet cutting machine.
An object of the present invention is to provide a sheet cutting machine which lends itself to easy portability, one which is especially useful in cutting interlocking picture puzzles, one which may be used to cut pieces from cardboard, millboard, or wood, the pieces to be of such shapes and sizes as to interlock in a particular pattern only, one which is sturdy in construction and simple in structure, economical to manufacture and to maintain, and one which is highly effective in action.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of the invention, showing the shield removed from the machine.
Figure 2 is a sectional line taken on line 2-2 of Fig; ure 1, with the shield in position on the machine, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary section of the reverse side of a picture puzzle showing the cuts that may be made in a sheet by the machine of the present invention.
Referring in greater detail to the drawings in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the portable sheet cutting machine of the present invention comprises a horizontally disposed Work table 33 which is supported within a frame 34 for upward movement in response to the rotation of a shaft 35 journaled in the frame 34. Hand actuable means, consisting in the crank 36, is provided for rotating the shaft 35 in either direction, there being a cam member 37 disposed on the other end of the shaft 35 opposite to the crank 36 and engaging a slide block 38 carried within the table 33 for effecting the movement of the latter upon rotation of the shaft 35. It is to be noted that the shaft 35 extends slidably through opposed slots 33' formed in the work table 33.
Another cam member 39 is carried by the shaft 35 intermediate the ends of the latter for raising and lowering a rod 40 slidably mounted within the frame 34, the lower end of the rod 40 bearing against the cam member 39 and the upper end of the rod 40 bearing against one end of a lever 41 which is journaled intermediate its ends in the frame 34 for rocking movement about a horizontal axis.
The other end of the lever 41 is received in a hole provided in the intermediate portion of an ejection rod 42 slidably mounted behind a blade 43 which is fixed by screws 44 to the frame 34. A shield 45 covers the blade 43 and is secured to the rod 42 for movement therewith by means of a nut 46 threaded on a bolt 47 which projects from the upper end of the rod 42.
The cam members 37 and 39 are arranged so that after the table 33 has carried the sheet upwardly into cutting engagement with the blade 43 and has again descended, the ejection rod 42 and the shield 45 descend and serve to push the sheet from the blade 43.
The work table 33 is provided with a slot 48 having the same configuration as the cutting blade 43.
In Figure 3, the sheet 12 has been cut into two portions 49 and 49' by the series of cuts extending inwardly of one edge. This was accomplished by repeatedly forcing the cutting blade 13 or 43 through the sheet 12,

and the sheet portion 49' is then cut into smaller portions by turning the portion 49' and then cutting the portion 49' at various angles to form pieces having difierent shapes and sizes.
The portable sheet cutting machine of the present invention enables the user to manufacture picture puzzles from sheets of paper, millboard, wood, or the like, rapidly and efficiently and in such a manner that each of the pieces of the sheet has a different configuration and interlocking with each other in a particular pattern to form the picture puzzle.
What is claimed is:
1. A portable sheet cutting machine comprising a frame, a work table adapted to support a sheet to be cut, a cutter blade of a prescribed configuration arranged in an upright position and spaced above said table, said table having a slot of a configuration conforming to that of said cutter blade, an upstanding shield positioned above said table and forwardly of said slot, at horizontally disposed rotatable shaft carried by said frame, means embodying a cam member carried by said shaft and engaging said table connecting said shaft to said table so that said table moves upwardly with the slot in interfitting engagement with said blade and downwardly with the slot out of interfitting engagement with said blade responsive to rotary movement of said shaft in one direction, an ejection rod slidably mounted behind said blade, said shield being secured to said rod for movement therewith, means embodying another cam member carried by said shaft and connected to said ejection rod so that said ejection rod and said shield operate following completion of the up and down movement of said work table to push a cut sheet from said blade responsive to the rotary movement of said shaft in said one direction, and hand actuable means on said shaft for effecting the movements of the latter.
2. A portable sheet cutting machine comprising a frame, a work table adapted to support a sheet to be cut, a cutter blade of a prescribed configuration arranged in an upright position and spaced above said table and fixely secured to said frame, said table having a slot of a configuration conforming to that of said cutter blade, an upstanding shield positioned above said table and forwardly of said slot and slidably mounted in said frame, a horizontally disposed rotatable shaft carried by said frame, means embodying a cam member carried by said shaft and engaging said table connecting said shaft to said table so that said table moves upwardly with the slot in interfitting engagement with said blade and downwardly with the slot out of interfitting engagement with said blade responsive to rotary movement of said shaft in one direction, and hand actuable means on said shaft for effecting the movements of the latter,
