United States 2,872,913 ABRADIN G WHEEL DRESSING APPARATUS Edward A. Rosier, Los Angeles, Calif. Application February 7, 1958, Serial No. 713,977 1 Claim. (Cl. 125-41 The present invention relates to an apparatus for dressing an abrading wheel.
An object of the present invention is to provide an abrading wheel dressing apparatus which lends itself to rapid and efiicient dressing of an abrading or grinding Wheel.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an abrading wheel dressing apparatus which may be accurately adjusted for wear, and one in which the component parts are protected from abrasive dust.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an abrading wheel dressing apparatus which is sturdy in construction, one simple in structure, and one economical to manufacture and assemble.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the apparatus of the present invention showing in dotted lines the longitudinal movement of the carriage and handle;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is an exploded isometric view of the block and carriage components, the carriage being partially broken away.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the apparatus of the present invention comprises a base of O-shaped cross-sectional configuration and having a clamping screw 12 extending through the lower end portion thereof. An upstanding block member 14 is superimposed upon and fixedly secured by cap screws 16 to the base 10.
A closed slot 18 extends from one face to the other face of the block member 14 and one face of the block member 14 is provided with a trackway 20 connected in communication with the slot 18.
A carriage 22, of inverted 'U-shaped cross-sectional configuration, is superimposed upon the block member 14 for back and forth longitudinal movement therealong. The inner face of one leg of the carriage 22 carries a dovetailed projection 24 fitting in the trackway 20. A transversely disposed threaded shank 26 extends through a threaded bore 28 in one leg of the carriage 22 and through an aligned another bore 30 in the other leg of the carriage 22. The shank 26 extends at an angle to the horizontal and through the slot 18 provided in the block member 14. A thumb screw 32 is disposed vertically in the carriage 22 and has its lower end bearing against a soft plug 34 which is in frictional engagement with the threads on the shank 26.
One end of the shank 26 projects beyond the base 10 and carries on its free end portion a socket member 36 having a diamond point on one end thereof, the point being designated by the reference numeral 38 and shown in Figure 2 to be in engagement with the periphery of a grinding wheel 40.
The portion of the shank 26 carrying the diamond point 38 projects beyond the side of the base 10 and the portion adjacent the other end projects beyond the other side of the base 10 and carries a knurled hand actuable wheel 42 for effecting the clockwise and counterclockwise rotational movements of the shank 26 to advance the latter or retract the latter through the carriage 22.
An upright arm 44 is pivotally connected by means of a bolt 46 to the base 10 and is operatively connected by means of another bolt 48 to the carriage 22 for elfecting the movement of the carriage when the arm is caused to swing from the full line position shown in Figure l to the dotted line position. The bolt 43 carries a roller 50 engagea-ble in a cam slot 52 provided in the arm 44 for effecting the movement of the carriage 22. A spacing sleeve 53 is circumposed about the shank portion of the bolt 46 and holds the arm 44 at the proper distance for wardly of the base 10. A shield 54 projects upwardly from the upper end portion of the carriage 22 and serves to keep dust from the hand or face of the operator of the apparatus of the present invention. A flexible skirt 56 depends from the lower end portion of the carriage 22 on the side of the latter adjacent the wheel to be dressed and keeps the emery dust from entering into the interior of the carriage 22.
One wall of the trackway 20 is provided with an adjustable strip member 58 held in position by a plurality of screws 69 for taking up any slack in the engagement of the projection 24 in the trackway 20.
In operation, the base 10 is clamped upon a work support such as is shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 and designated by the reference numeral 62 and the shank 26 is turned in a clockwise direction or counterclockwise direction to effect the position of the point 38 adjacent the perimeter of the wheel to be dressed. With one hand on the operating arm 4 6 and the other on the wheel 42, the operator may efiect the back and forth longitudinal movement of the carriage 22 relative to the block member 14 and to dress the wheel 40 as desired. The ends of the closed slot .18 in the block member 14 limit the longitudinal back and forth movement of the carriage 22 relative to the block member 14 and the attached base 10.
While only a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been shown and described, other embodiments are contemplated and numerous changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
An abrading wheel dressing apparatus comprising a base adapted to be secured to a work support, an upstanding block member superimposed upon and fixedly secured to said base, said block member having a longitudinally extending closed slot, a carriage mounted on said block member for back and forth longitudinal movement, a transversely disposed shank extending at an angle to the horizontal through said carriage and the slot of said block member and connected to said carriage for rotational movement in clockwise and counterclockwise directions, said shank having the portion adjacent one end projecting beyond one side of said base and having the portion adjacent the other end also projecting beyond the other side of said base with the part of the shank within said block member slot upon engagement with the closed ends of said slot limiting the back and forth movements of said carriage, a dressing tool projecting from said one end and adapted to engage an abrading wheel to be dressed, hand operable means on the other end of said shank for efiiecting the rotational movement of the latter, and an arm pivotally connected to said base and operatively connected to said carriage for effecting the movement of the latter.
