G. WILSON.
MACHINE FOR GROOVING BOARDS FOR BOXES.
No. 287,207. Patented Oct. 28, 1883.
wz a Ma irn TATES GEORGE WILSON, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR GROOVING BOARDS FOR BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,207, dated October 23, 1883.
Application filed May 17, 1883. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE \VILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo,
in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Machine for Making Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the construction of machinery for the better, stronger, more rapid, and more economical production of the partitions of bottle and other packing-boxes, which require their inside spaces to be partitioned or divided for the safety and convenient handling of the contents which they are designed to carry, and for strengthand durability requiring the said partitions to interlock and be secured together in the most substantial manner. The said partitions as usually made are composed of a series of pieces, preferably of wood, the length of which corresponds to the inside measure of the box which is to be divided, and of suitable width to give the required height to the compartments, and are commonly united by grooving one-half way through the width or vertical height of the several pieces-a process which is known to the trade as halving together. The edges of the several pieces which are thus out are thereby weakened, and often break away for want of adequate support from the adjacent parts with which they connect; and to remedy this defect another and partially different form of uniting the said partitions has been adopted, which is hereinafter explained, the economical production of which partitions requires special machinery, which machinery is the object of my invention and explained in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section on line A, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is aview in perspective of the table, upon which the stock is placed and held by any suitable means while being operated upon; and
Fig. at is a plan of the inside partitions of a box as made upon my machine. Fig. 5 is a side view of one piece of material as prepared on my machine to form a section, as shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an edge view on line B, Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is also an edge view Fig. 5.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
on line C,
Attached to the frame D, and mounted in suitable bearings, e, revolve three arbors, f.
These several arbors carry a series of saws or cutters, g, of suitable width and'diameter to cut the slots and grooves shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7. Mounted upon tracks h, and adapted to be adjusted vertically by means of wedges j, screws 70, and wheel m, and to slide toward and from the saw-arbors g, is the table I.
The table I, Fig. 3, is constructed with radial fingers a, which are adapted to be adjusted longitudinally by means of slot 0, bars 0, and bolts g. It is obvious that this construct-ion admits the cutters g to be passed between the fingers n for the purpose of cutting a piece, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7. It is also apparent that more or fewer cutters g and and fingers a may be used, ifdesired, to have more or less sections, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7.
I am aware that the form of rack shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, slotted and grooved together as shown, is old, also saws and tables of various kindsv for grooving the same by more than one operation; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a box-making machine constructed substantially as herein described, the table I, having arranged relatively thereto longitudinally-adj ustable radial fingers n, which are supported at one end only, in combination with the three saw or grooving-arbors, f ff, arranged and adapted for completing the slotting and grooving of one section of stock by one operation, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a box-making machine constructed substantially as herein described, the table I, having relatively thereto longitudinally-adjustable radial fingers 12, slots 0, bars p, and bolts in combination with the three saw or grooving-arbors f f f, arranged and adapted for completing the slotting and grooving of one section of stock by one operation, substantially as shown and described.
ADOLPHE GALIPEAU, EMIL LEHMAN.
