2 Claims. (Cl. 131- 256) The present invention relates to extinguishing apparatus cooperable to positively extinguish an ignited tip of a longitudinal orally smokeable object. It comprises extinguishing apparatus consisting of a container having a hollow interior, said container being provided with inlet means communicating with said hollow interior, said hollow interior being cooperable to removably receive an ignited tip of an orally smokeable object therein for extinguishing purposes, accomplished by manually operable liquid pumping means in communication with said inlet port means and adapted to pump a liquid into said hollow interior of the container whereby to extinguish the ignited tip of the orally smokeable object safely and in .one preferred form.
It is known that a very considerable number of cigarette extinguishing devices have been developed in the past most of which are intended to operate by means of smothering, crushing and/or constricting action whereby to cut off the supply of oxygen to an ignited tip.
It is also true that, in certain instances, there have been absolute extinguishing devices, utilizing other means of cutting off the supply of oxygen. However, most of these utilize sand, or earthof some sort in which the cigarette must be manually and forcibly submerged, making them unfeasible for use in a moving vehicle, and not instantaneous in their extinguishing action. Therefore these cannot be called cigarette extinguishing apparatuses in the truly instantaneous sense of the word.
The present invention is so constructed that there is at all times a reusable supply of liquid securely contained in the hollow interior of a container such as a hollow rubber or elastomeric bulb and in a readily accessible position to instantaneously extinguish the lighted tip of a cigarette by squeezing manually the hollow rubber bulb and forcing the liquid up over the lighted tip of the aforementioned cigarette.
The cigarette extinguishing apparatus of the present invention includes: a container having a hollow interior cooperable to removably receive an ignited tip of an orally smokeable object therein, and being provided with inlet port means communicating with said hollow interior; manually operable liquid pumping means in communication with said port means and cooperable therewith to manually pump a liquid into said hollow interior of the container whereby to extinguish the ignited tip of the cigarette.
One preferred form of the present invention may also include spacer means positioned in said hollow interior adjacent to said port means and abuttingly cooperable with an ignited tip of a cigarette. In a preferred form, said spacer means has downwardly-directed support means extending downwardly through said inlet means in a virtually non-obstructing manner.
In one preferred form of the present invention, said container may consist of an outer downwardly converging conical member terminating in a first hollow apertured apex and in an inner downwardly converging conical member terminating in a second hollow apertured apex United States Patent Patented Feb. 3, 1959 2 providing said inlet means, said inner member being positioned within the outer conical member with the second apex abutting the inside of the first apex with a portion of said support means located therebetween to firmly position the spacer means.
To facilitate understanding, reference will be made to the hereinbelow described drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view illustrating one embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken in the direction of the arrows II-II in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar in aspect to Fig. 2, showing the pumping means in actuated position, to extinguish the ignited tip of a cigarette, which is shownin broken lines; and
Fig. 4 is a reduced perspective view of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1-3 with a supporting loop attached thereto;
As shown in the drawing, the invention takes the form of a container indicated generally at 1, which consists of an outer downwardly converging conical member 2 terminating in a first hollow apertured apex portion 3, and an inner downwardly converging conical member 4 terminating in a second hollow apertured apex portion 5, said inner member 4 being positioned within the outer conical member 2 with the second apex 5 abutting the inside of the first apex 3 with portions 6A of bifurcated support means 6 of a spacer button 7 located therebetween to firmly position the spacer button 7 adjacent an inlet portion 8.
A pump and reservoir consisting of a rubber or elastomeric bulb 9 communicates with said inlet portion 8 and is adapted to manually pump a liquid into said container 1 as illustrated in Fig. 3 whereby to extinguish the ignited tip 10 of a cigarette 11 therein.
Supporting means, such as a looped tensile member 12 may be connected to the container 1 to permit the extinguishing apparatus to be suspended from a projection on the dashboard of an automobile, or the like. Said fastening means is shown in Fig. 4.
Numerous modifications and variations of the present invention will occur to those skilled in the art after a careful study hereof. All such, properly within the basic scope and/ or teachings of the present invention are intended to be included and comprehended herein as fully as if specifically described, illustrated and claimed herein.
The embodiment of the present invention specifically described, illustrated and claimed herein is exemplary only, and is not intended to limit the scope of the present invention, which is intended to be interpreted in the light of the prior art and the appended claims only, with due consideration for the doctrine of equivalents.
I claim:
