7 Claims. (Cl. 30-281) This invention relates to a hair clipper having a shear plate, means for adjusting the position of the plate and means for adjustably imposing frictional drag on the adjusting means.
In the device disclosed in my United States Patent 2,795,848, a shear plate is adjustable with respect to the heel of the clipper case and with respect to the cutting blade with which the shear plate cooperates in clipping hair. The device of the present invention includes means for adjustably imposing drag or friction on the carriage or guide piece on which the shear plate is mounted for movement.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention I provide a clamp bar for the flange of a slideway which overhangs an exposed marginal portion of the shear plate carriage. The clamp bar is desirably actuated by a screw adjuster.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following disclosure in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly in section of a hair clipper embodying the device of the present invention, the section being taken along line 1-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of a portion of the clipper with the shear plate, the cutting blade, etc. removed to expose details of the claimed device.
Figure 3 is a cross section taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
The hair clipper has a case 6 with a heavy heel plate 7 to which a slideway plate 8 is attached by means of the screws 9. The slideway plate 8 has longitudinally extending marginal flanges 10 turned through angles greater than 90 and which overhang marginally exposed beveled portions 11 of shear plate carriage or slide 12. The carriage is fastened by means of the bolts 13 to the shear plate 14.
Heel 7 is transversely bored at 17 and carries a rock shaft 18 having a laterally projecting peg 19 with a ball 20 engaged in a suitable socket 21 in the carriage 12. Rocking motion imparted to the rock shaft 18 by manipulation of its exposed handle 22 will cause reciprocation of the shear plate in the direction of elongation of the flanges 10.
In order to impose moderate frictional drag on the shear plate and to impositively lock the shear plate in any position to which it is adjusted, I provide dual clamp bars 25 at each side of the clipper heel. The bars 25 have beveled sides 26 inclined substantially at the same angle as the flanges 10 of the way plate 8. The clamp bars 25 function as wedges under the pressure of adjusting screws 27 which are tapped into suitable bores 28 in the heel 7. By applying tightening pressure to the screws 27, the
States Patent 0 beveled sides 26 of the clamp bars 25 will tighten slideway flanges 10 against the underlying beveled margins 11 of the carriage.
Ordinarily the screws 27 will be factory adjusted to im-- pose light frictional pressure on the carriage. Accordingly, the shear plate 14 will be impositively held in any position to which it is moved by manipulation of the handle 22. As the parts wear, however, it may be necessary to tighten the screws 27 to maintain the proper pressure on the side flanges 10. Access to the screws 27 can be had simply by loosening the screws 13 and removing the shear plate 14 from its carriage 12.
As is conventional, the clipper is also provided with a shear blade 29 actuated from vibrator arm 30 through driving arm 31.
I claim:
1. The combination in a hair clipper having a shiftable shear plate, of a carriage for the shear plate and a slideway along which the carriage is movable, means for adjustably imposing frictional drag between the carriage and slideway, and means for overcoming said frictional drag for shifting said plate notwithstanding said drag.
2. The combination in a hair clipper having a shiftable shear plate, of a carriage for the shear plate and a slideway along which the carriage is movable, and means for adjustably imposing frictional drag between the carriage and slideway, said carriage being provided with a laterally exposed margin and the slideway having a flange overhanging said margin, said means comprising a clamp to adjustably tighten said flange against said margin.
3. The device of claim 2 in which the carriage margin and slideway flange are correspondingly wedge-shaped in cross section, said clamp comprising another wedge engaged with the said flange.
4. The device of claim 3 in which the clamp wedge is provided with a screw tightener.
5. In a hair clipper having a heel portion and a shear plate mounted for movement with respect to said heel portion, said heel portion being provided with a slideway plate having flanges elongated in the direction of movement of the shear blade, said shear blade being provided with a carriage plate having exposed margins embraced by said flanges whereby said shear plate is guided by said flanges in its movement, and means for tighten ing said flanges against the exposed margins of the carriage plate.
6. The device of claim 5 wherein the exposed margins of the carriage plate and the said flanges are correspondingly inclined, said tightening means comprising wedges respectively engaged with the inclined flanges and means for clamping said wedges against said heel whereby to adjustably impose pressure on the flanges and against the embraced margins of the carriage.
7. The device of claim 6 in which the means last mentioned comprise screws threadably engaged with the heel.
