Description

Jan. 13, 1959 c. w. LEE
SAFETY GARMENT AND BELT FOR INFANTS Filed June 25, 1957 INVENTOR. CATHERINE W LEE A TTORNEY United States Patent SAFETY GARMENT AND BELT FOR INFANTS Catherine W. Lee, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application June 25, 1957, Serial No. 667,822
1 Claim. (Cl. 128-134) This invention relates to an improved safety garment and belt for infants, and the present invention contemplates a further development of my original patent on a similar device, entitled safety garments for infants, which was granted on April 13, l943, No. 2,316,602.
One of the important objects of this invention is the provision of a combination sleeping and limited exercising garment for babies which will hold the baby securely in or on a bed without uncomfortably hampering desirable bodily movement.
Another object of this invention is to provide a safety garment for infants which is so constructed that it can be employed for securely restraining the infant from falling off a bed or the like while at the same time permitting sleeping positions both on the back or on the face or stomach.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a safety garment for infants which can be securely fastened on the child and similarly securely fastened to the bed or crib and in such a manner that the operations require very little effort and minimum time.
Another and still further important object of the invention relates to the construction of a garment of the class described which is composed of a minimum number of parts easily assembled, but which will not come apart or get out of order, even though repeatedly and continuously used.
Yet another object is to provide a combination sleeping and safety garment for infants which can be securely positioned around and onto the upper portion of the childs body and without in any way hampering the trunk or leg portions, which accordingly allows ready access for diaper changing and the like.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and following specification.
The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of improved safety garment and belt for infants of this invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the same.
Figure 3 shows an infant on a mattress or bed clothed in the garment of this invention and in a position for resting or sleeping on its back.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, but showing the infant held in the garment for a face or stomach sleeping position.
Figure 5 illustrates an adaptation of the invention, wherein the child is comfortably and safely held in a crib or the like.
As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral indicates generally the body portion of the improved safety garment and belt for infants of this invention. It is provided with relatively short sleeve sections 12 and a neck band 14, having a cut or slit 16 extending downwardly to allow easy application and removal. The slits 16 terminate at a point low enough to allow the garment to slip over the infants head easily,
2,868,194 Patented Jan. 13, 1959 thereby saving time and trouble. The neck band is slotted in both the front and rear, as shown, and integral tapes or ties 18 are provided for a secure fastening operation.
The garment does not extend much beyond the babys Waist line, as is obvious and for obvious reasons. The material may be of any suitable cloth or the like with various patterns thereon and different sizes can be provided.
Two tapes 20 and 22 are provided, one at the front and one at the back of the garment, and these are fastened by stitching or the like 24. When the garment is placed on the baby, the free ends of these tapes are knotted together, as best shown at 30 in Figure 3,. and the neck bands likewise fastened so that there is no possibility of the garment coming off the baby or the baby getting out of the same.
An additional wider and stronger tape of considerable length is likewise provided, this being indicated by the reference numeral 32, and this is likewise fastened to the garment by stitching, as shown at 34. When the tape 32 is fastened to the garment, it is sewed directly over the shorter and narrower tape 22 with additional stitching, as best shown in Figure 2. This provides a substantial and strong construction at the points where the pull is greatest when in use.
As best shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the tape or strap 32 is long enough to extend completely across a bed, mattress or crib, and also to extend downwardly for some distance for fastening by tying, as at 40 in Figure 3, or by pinning, as at 42 in Figure 4. In actual practice, the length of the tape 32 is at least six feet and preferably seven feet. This allows tying of the ends to corresponding portions 44 of a crib 46, in which the infant may be placed for nonsleeping or play purposes.
In practice, the jacket or garment 10 is slipped over the head of the child and the neck pieces 18 fastened, as likewise the belt tapes 22. This provides a snug fit around the body of the baby and for children who have learned to walk the longer straps 32 can be employed to assist the child in maintaining an upright position when held by the parent or nurse.
The child can be placed in the bed for either one of two sleeping positions, as shown in Figures 3 and 4 and as heretofore described.
The jacket can also be used for short naps in the daytime by pinning the straps 32 to a large mattress or the like or the straps can be tied to the babys crib. Also for maintaining the child in a safe position in a high chair or a buggy.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention; and I, therefore, do not propose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
A safety garment and belt for infants comprising a jacket adapted to be fitted about the upper portion of a childs body, means for fastening the jacket at both front, rear and a restraining strap fastened to the garment, said restraining strap having its ends adapted to be fastened to the sides of a bed, the fastening means including neck tapes and waist tapes, the neck portions including vertical cuts at both front and rear, the neck fastening tapes being at the upper ends of the cuts, the waist fastening tapes being stitched to both the front and rear of the garment, and the restraining strap being likewise stitched to the garment over one of the waist fastening straps.
