BALING PRESS. l No. 286,771. vPenzented Oct. 16, 1883/l WITNESSES l INVEMUR gw f3 m/ v ,Bf /MM/(J I .Attorney Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DESIRE BOYER, OF TERRE BONNE PARISH, LOUISIANA.
BALINQ-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofV Letters Patent No. 286,771, dated October 16, 1883.
Application filed May 4, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, DEsIEE BOYER, a resident of the parish of Terre Bonne, State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Baling-Iresses; and I do hereby declare 'the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the, same, reference being had to the annexed drawing,` making a part of this specification.
This invention relates tothat class of baling-presses in which the follower is operated by means of levers and connecting-chains; and it consists in providing the frame of the press with pinion or iluted rollers, and the inner ends of the levers with teeth adapted to engage said rollers and operate in conjunction therewith, as will be hereinafter described. y
My invention further consists in the combination and arrangement of parts,as hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
The accompanying drawing rep resents a vertical longitudinal section of a baling-press provided with my improvements.
The letter A designates the main frame, B the packing-box,0 the bed or lower platen, andD the follower, all of which are of ordinary construction.
My improvements consist in the combination, with the frame A, of a pair of pinion or Iiuted rollers, E E, having journals at the ends thereof, adapted to operate in boxes or bearings connected with the lower longitudinal timbers of the frame, as shown at f f The follower is provided at or near its ends with eyebolts g g', to which chains are connected,
as shown at h h, and the ends of the packing,
box have vertical slots t' fi cut therein for the outward passage of the said chains, as shown.
K K are levers, the inner ends of which are made straight or curved, as preferred, and each is provided with teeth which are adapted to gear into the pinion or fluted rollers and to operate therewith, as .will be presently described. Each lever is, furthermore, provided with a hook for engaging the aforesaid chains, as shown at Z Z, and the ends of the lower platen are furnished with pins m m for engaging the links of the chains and holding the same whenever requisite.
In the operation of my invention the packing-box is lled with cotton 'or other material to be baled in the usual manner. The follower is then placed in position and the free ends of the chains passed outward through the slots in the end of the box. The toothed portions of the levers are then made to engage the pinion or grooved rollers, and the outer en ds of the saidlevers raised, so that the hooks thereof may be inserted in any of the upper links of the chains. The outer ends of the levers are then depressed, so as to press the material contained in the box by pulling [downward the follower. By this arrangement it will be seen that the fulcrums are partially l revolved as the levers are drawn downward,
and that the distance between the fulcrums and pulling-points is gradually decreased as the material becomes more compact, thereby increasing the efficiency of the levers and of the power applied thereto. When the levers have been depressed to their full extent, or to anyl desired distance, they are Inoved endwise under thepress, so that the chains may be brought in contact with the pins m an of the lower K platen, and be securely held by the same until the hooks can be disengaged from the chains and' fresh holds taken thereon, when the said chains are disengaged from the pins and the levers again depressed, as in the nature of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I clai In as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in a baling-press, of
the packing-box B, having its ends provided with vertical slots t' t', the lower platen 'provided with pins m m', and the follower provided with eyebolt-s and chains, substantially as and for the purpose specified. A
2. The combination, in a balingpress, of a pair of pinion or fluted rollers, a pair of levers having teeth adapted to engage Vthe same, a packing-box having vertical slots in the ends thereof, and a follower provided with chains, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. In `testimony whereof `I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. J
I DESIRE BOYER.
