SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,640, dated October 16, 188?.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK O. RoLLINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weld, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Horseshoe, of

which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to horseshoes; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, the object of which is to provide the shoe with calks which may be easily detached or replaced, as will be hereinafterfully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved horseshoe with the calk in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the toe-calk detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the horseshoe the toezo calk havingbeen removed; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view, showing the toe-call: in position.

The same letters refer to the sameparts. in all the figures.

A in the drawings designates the horseshoe, which is constructed in the usual manner with the nail-groove B, and which is provided on its under side, at the front end, with a trans. verse dovetailed recess, 0, which is tapering 0' or wedge-shaped in direction of its length, as

shown. At the wide or front end of this recess is a notch, D,which enters the nailgroove B, as will be clearly seen in the drawings.

F is the toe calk, which is provided on its 3 5 upper side with adoveta-iled tapering or wedgeshaped strip or cleat, G, adapted to fit in the recess 0 and secure the calk in position. The

strip or cleat G extends at one end, so as to form a point, H, corresponding with the contour of the recess 0 at the edge of the horseshoe. This point, which, being formed in one piece with the calk, is of steel. and consequently somewhat elastic, is bent slightly to one side, as at I, so as to form a spring-catch adapted to enter the notch D when the calk is driven into position, and thereby hold the calk securely.

The operation of my invention will be readily understood. The calk is adjusted by driv ing the wedge-shaped cleat into the recess 0, when it will be held partly by friction and partly by the point H entering the notch D. By prying the said point back the calk may be readily removed without removing the shoe from the foot of the horse.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with ahorseshoe having on its under side, at the front end, a transverse dovetailed recess tapering or wedge-sh aped in direction of its length, and having at its wide or front end a notch communicating with the nail-groove, in combination with the toe-calk having on itsupper side a dovetailed wedgeshaped cleat extending at the front end, so as to form a point adapted to enter the notch in the dovetailed recess, as setforth;
