essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 10 is a transverse sectional view of a fricproduction of a simple and effective machine for grinding cocks and faucets in a manner similartothatnowemployedbybrass-finishers. To attain this end, I construct my cock and faucet grinding machine essentially of a suit "able frame, A, having a bed or table, B, carrying standards 0 G, D D, respectively, the former pair being provided with journals for the reception of the spindle E, carrying the cone-pulley F, and the latter pair being adapted to receive the spindle G, having the chuck H.
I Upon one end of the shaft E is fitted an eccentric, K, connecting with a crank, L, on the shaft Gby means of a connecting-rod, M. Rotary motion being communicated to the conepulley in any desirable and well known manner, this motion is, by means of the eccentric and the crank mentioned, converted into a vibratory or rocking motion in the shaft G, which motion is so devised as to be always somewhat less than one-half of a revolution.
,On the forward part of the frame A are provided two cheeks, M M, respectively, in the jaws m of which are fitted boxesor bean ings O 0, receiving a shaft, P, to which a frame, Q, made preferably of wrought-iron pipe, owing to its lightness and strength, is affixed in any suitable manner. This frame Q has arod, Q, carrying on each end a handle, R, whereby said frame is actuated and manipulated in a manner as hereinafter more fully referred to. This frame Q is vertically adjustable by the sliding boxes 0 O, and these are locked in any position within the compass of the vertical movement of said boxes 0 O by .means of locking-segments S S, fixed to a treadle crank-shaft, '1, so that by depressing said treadleshaft the locking-segments will liberate the boxes 0, while a suitable spring, U, willraise said treadle assoon as liberated, and thus again lock the said boxes 0. In order to balance the weight of the frame Q and its accessories, I provide springs V, or a similar suspending device, to uphold said boxes 0, while, to prevent said frame from falling over, I attach a spiral spring, q, to said frame and connect it with any part of the table B, as clearly shown in the figures.

two pieces of wood hinged together, if desired, and recessed in their meeting surfaces, so as to receive the cock or faucet Y between them when said clamp is closed, a locking device. Z, Fig. 8, consisting of a hook and eye, Z Z, respectively, or any other suitable mechanism, being provided to keep said clamp in a closed position, while another clamping mechanism, constructed, essentially, of a hooked-shaped fastening, 2, and a camshaped lever,1, )ivoted to the under side of one part of the body-clamp ISO \ be removed from the machine, to remove the faucet and replace it by another one, as often as necessary.
The machine heretofore described is capable of grinding all the differentkinds and sizes of faucets in the market, each kind or size requiring adifferent body-clamp. These clamps are therefore required to be of various thicknesses, and in order to enable the various size of fancets, 850., being brought in line with the axial line of the shaft G the frame Q is rendered vertically adjustable, as heretofore described, and when adjusted to any desired position is retained in that position-by the foot-lever T, with the cams S acting upon the boxes 0 O of the shaft I, supporting the frame Q, all as hereinbefore set forth and described.
In operation the faucet Y is placed into the faucet-clamp X, and the latter secured to the rod Q of the frame Q. Now, the plug y, Fig. 8, is clamped in the chuck H and the machine set in motion, whereby said plug 11 is caused to rock or oscillate in a manner readily comprehended. Now, a suitable abrading substance, consisting, usually, of very fine yellow sand mixed with soap and water into a paste of the consistency of cream, is applied to the plug,
and then the body of the faucet pushed lightly and gradually onto the said plug and pulled off again, the operation being repeated very frequently, so as to prevent the plug from binding in the body, which would cause cutting or creases to appear, and thereby render the faucet, &c., useless. \Vhen a'sufficient grinding has taken place, the plug and faucet are washed to examine the progress in grinding, and when the plug is found to bear perfectly in the body these parts are removed from the machine and others inserted.
It will now be readily observed that the action of this machine is precisely like that now performed by a mechanic when grinding cocks and faucets, the only difference being that in the process of grinding cocks by hand the plug is held stationary and the body actuated, while in my present machine the body remains stationary, as it were, and the plug is vibrated.
In order not to keep the plug in the same position while the grinding is taking place, I may provide the chuck H with suitable means for self-centering the plug, so that I can remove the same and turn it around sufficiently to present the plug tothe faucet in different positions; or I may make the shaft G in two parts and connect these parts by means of clearly shown in said Fig. 10, or by any other suitable mechanism, so that one part of said shaft maybe revolved'while the other remains fixed, and thus produce the desired result in an expeditious manner. This clutch mechanism is, furthermore, of advantage, because it would cause the plug to remain at rest should it become locked or tight in the body while grinding takes place, from any cause whatever, until the machine can be stopped or the faucet pulledoff the said plug. The shaft G is inclined with reference to the'shaft E, the inclination being downward toward the front side of the machine. This is quite an essen tial feature in cock-grinding machines, because it prevents the grinding substance from flowing off the plug or out of the body, the inclination being such that the lower side of the tapering plug is horizontal.
It is perfectly evident that a different clamp X is required for every different faucet-body, and that any kind of a chuck H that may be found to answer the purpose may be used in this machine in place of the chuck shown. So may other different clamping mechanism be used for attaching the cock-clamps X to the actuating-frame Q without changing the nature of my invention, such changes in the details of the mechanism being readily madeas circumstances require.
In the drawings I have shown mechanism for converting the rotary motion of the shaft E into a rocking motion of the shaft G, such conversion being accomplished'by the eccentric, the throw of which is less than that of the crank on said shaft G. It is perfectly obvious, however, that any other mechanism for converting rotary into oscillating motion may be employed without changing the nature of my said invention, such mechanism being well known and in common use on many different machines, engines, &c., and neednot, therefore, be here described as equivalents for the mechanism specified.
The operation of grinding cocks and faucets by hand without the aid of machinery is a very slow and tedious one, and by brass-fin ishers is shunned more than any other work connected with their trade. Any machine that will do this part of the brass-finishers work perfectly cannot but be a welcome tool in brassfinishing establishments, and my present ma- 1. The combinatiomwith the frame A and table B, of the rocking-shaft G, having the chuck H for holding the faucet-plug, the adjustable frame Q, with the body-clamp X, and mechanism, substantially as described, for looking said frame in any desired position, said shaft G being fitted within suitable hearings on the machine, substantially as and for the object stated.

In cock-grinding machines, the adjustable mechanism for holding and actuating the faucet-body, consisting, essentially, of an adjustable frame having suitable handles, and a clamp to embrace said body, said clamp be ing removably affixed to said frame in a manner substantially as specified, for the object stated.

6. In cock-grinding machines, the oscillating shaft having the chuck for holding the faucet-plug, in combination with the frictionelutch on said shaft, substantially as specified, for the object stated.

In cock-grinding machines, the combination, with the shaft E, having the driving-pulley F, of the shaft G, with chuck H and friction-clutch, as described, eccentric K, connecting-rod N, crank L, and the adjustable frame Q and locking device for said frame, the whole being constructed and combined substantially
