Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN TIEBOUT, OF BROOKLYN, NENV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WM. TIEBOUT, OF SAME PLAGE.
BUNG- CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,640, dated June 5, 1860.
To all lwhom 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN TIEBOUT, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Cutting Bungs, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specificat-ion, in which- Figure l represents a sectional front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, the line :0, Fig. l, indicating the plane of section.
Similar letters in both views refer to corresponding parts.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawing.
The driving shaft O, has a longitudinal sliding motion in the frame A being guided by the cross-bar B and by a tubular projection D which is secured to the lower crossbar. A rotary motion is imparted to the shaft O by means of a pulley E which is of sufiicient length to allow of sliding the shaft up and down without throwing off the belt.
Secured to the lower end of the shaft C, is a disk F by means of a screw or screws a or in any other convenient manner. This disk is furnished with a series of radial slots b, the number of which corresponds to the number of the cutters to be employed and which form the guides for the adjustable hinges c to which the cutters G are attached by means of pivots (Z. These hinges are secured to the disk by means of screws e or in any other convenient manner so that they can be moved nearer to or farther from the center of the shaft as may be desired. The
cutters are secured to arms 7, the upper ends of which are bent from the center of the shaft C as clearly shown in Fig. l, and these arms pass through another disk H similar move up and down.
to the disk F. This second disk however is not connected to the shaft O but it is retained by a neck g in the lower end of the tubular projection D in such a manner that it rota-tes freely without being allowed to Adjustable guide plates 7L are secured to the under side of the disk H, which is furnished with radial slots L to allow said guide plates to be moved nearer to or farther from the center, and they (the guide plates) are provided with openings just large enough to admit the arms f of the cutters.
The operation is as follows: The hinges o and the guide plates L are adjusted according to the size of the bungs or corks to be cut, and the length of the cutter arms f is such that when the shaft O is up and before it begins to move down the bent portion of the same extends beyond the upper disk H. As soon as the shaft begins to be depressed the bent portion of the cutter' arms enters the guide plates h and the points of the cutters are forced farther and fart-her apart, as the cutting proceeds.
By these means the bungs or corks are cut out to the desired bevel in a simple and effective manner, and all the parts of my device are so arranged, that they are not subjected to any liability to get out of order and thereby to cause an interruption of the cutting operation.
lllhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination with the disk F, and arms f, of the adjustable hinges 0, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the tubular projection D, guide plates it, and adjustable with the sliding shaft O, and disk F, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
JOHN TIEBOUT.
