JAMES A. ALLEN, OFFHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BRANDlNG-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,366, dated October 9, 1883. Application filed October 14, 1.882. (No model.)
irons.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a branding-tool made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, the same with the iron detached from the handle; Fig. 3, a side view, partly in section; Fig. 4, a sectional plan on the line 1 2, Fig. 3; and Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8, views of modified forms of the tool.
By constructing the tool in accordance with my invention the iron can be laid upon the fire face upward, and a number of irons can be used with each handle, the operation of branding being facilitated, as one iron can be heated while another is in use.
In the tool shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 the handle consists of a tubular stem, a, having a forked lower end, and a rod, 1), adapted to said tubular stem, and also having a forked lower end, both the stem at and rod I) having suitable projections, by which they can be firmly grasped. The arms d (I of the handle are hooked at the lower ends for adaptation to pins 6, which extend across recesses f in the back of the iron B, and the lower ends of the arms'g of the rod b are adapted to bear upon inclined lugs h on the back of the iron, these lugs bearing the relation to the recesses f shown in Fig. 4. In fitting the handle to the ironthe parts are adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2, the arms 9 of the rod b being in line with the arms (I of the handle. The hooked ends of the arms (1 are then applied to the pins 6, and the rod b turned so as to bring the arms 9 of the same to a position at right angles, or thereabout,
to the arms (I, the lower ends of said arms 5 bearing upon the inclined lugs 71, and servcausing the iron to swing on the arms d when released from the control of the locking-arms.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification of my invention, in which the hooked arms (1 are adapted to pins projecting from the edges of the iron, and a single locking-arm, g, only is used.
The iron, when detached from the handle, can be laid on the fire face upward, so that there is no risk of destroying or impairing the face of the brand. Instead of detaching the iron, the locking-arms 9 may be turned to the position shown in Fig. 2,'in order to unlock the iron, and the handle can then be turned down against the back of the iron, so as to permit the same to be laid upon the fire face upward. The iron may also be pivoted to the handle, so as not to be detachable from the same, if desired, instances of this form of the tool being shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8. Fig. 6 shows a forked handle so pivoted, and provided with a single locking-arm, while Fig. 7 shows a single handle-arm and a forked locking-arm. In Fig. 8 the looking-arm is of a somewhat different character from that shown in the other figures, the arm in this case being pivoted to the handle so as to swing up, in order to unlock the iron, and being prevented from swinging up accidentally by a pin, :0, passed through the lugs to which the arnris hung, this pin being removed when it is desired to unlock the iron from the handle.
I claimas my invention 1.. The combination of a branding-iron with a pivoted handle and a locking-arm, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a branding-iron, a locking arm, and a handle pivoted to the iron, but detachable therefrom, as set forth.
3. The combination of a branding-iron, a handle pivoted thereto, and a lockingarm adapted to turn on the handle, as set forth.
4. The combination of a branding-iron, a In testimony whereof I have signed my name handle pivoted thereto, and a pivoted loekingto this specification in the presence of two subarm, adapted to engage with a lug or lugs on scribing witnesses. the iron, as set forth. J AS. A. ALLEN.
5 5. The combination of a brandi11g-iron, a \Vitnesses:
handle pivoted thereto, and having a lug or HARRY DRURY, lugs m, and a locking-arm, as set forth. HARRY SMITH.
