Figs. 14 and 15 are, respectively, full and sectional which it can be easily removed by the fingers and another type elernent snapped into place. Change of ele-v ments does not require the removal of the clip from the type bar and one of the functions of the tongue 24 is to prevent the clip from slipping out of the slot 18 of the type bar during the replacing operations.
In Figs. '7, 8, and 9 the type bar 50 is adapted to hold two type elements 51 and-52, and is provided with a cylindrical or full guide or hinge stud 53 and a semicylindrical or half guide stud 54. The latter provides the clearance necessary to allow the type 51 to be swung about its stud 53 when it is being removed and also makes it possible to space the type elements the proper distance vertically of the characters thereof. The type bar 50 is shaped to provide an enlarged striking head 56 which is slotted inwardly as at 57 from its outer end and parallel to a flat face 58 which has spaced notches 59 therein for the reception of suitable keys 61 projecting from the bottom of the slot 62 formed in each type element. The sides 63 of each type element are provided with pockets 64 or depressions into which seat the nubs 66 of the clips 67. The latter may or may not be provided with tongues as is the clip 26, but are substantially U-shaped and are tempered so that the sides thereof converge to provide gripping jaws for holding the type elements in place. The sides of each type element are tapered and the edges bevelled as described in connection withtthe element so that the type can be snapped into place with a minimum of effort.
Suitable clearances are provided between the top of the slots in the type elements and the finished face of the type bar, so that when the form of clip 26 is used the tongue 24 provides a cushioning effect when the type strikes the platen, and the combined action of said tongue and the trunnion effect of the nubs makes the type selfseating at platen impact so that a clear type impression is produced. The type elements of each form have recesses for the studs in each side and the studs have a drive fit with a hole in the type bar so that the stud can be used at one side of the type bar or the other to engage the type elements as used on the right or left hand type bars. The clips may be secured in place by the swaged spots 65 which crowd the metal of the slot and block exit of the clips.
-In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 12 and 13, the clip 70 is made the same as the clip 26 except for the tongue 24. It is fixed in place in the slot 71 of the type bar 72 by swaging the metal of the type bar as at 73 to crowd the metal of the type bar and jam the clip in place. A shoulder or flange 74 formed at the ends and sides of the type element 76 permits the use of a simplified pick-off tool 77 whose legs 78 can be spread so that the turned lower ends 79 thereof, notched as at 80, can snap beneath the flange 74 of the type element. When the tool is rocked in counterclockwise direction the type is lifted out of engagement with the clip and can be readily removed from the type bar.
In Fig. 14 the clip 81 is held in place by a spot of solder 82, and in Fig. 15 the method of fixing the clip 83 in the slot 84 is by swaging the outer edges of the material at the end of the slot as at 85. This figure also illustrates the clearance between the sides and bottom of the key 86 of the type 87 and the notch 88 so that the floating effect of the type is obtained, particularly when a clip, having a tongue, is employed.
It is to be noted that the clip 26 with its tongue 24, can be used in the slot 84 which does not need to be recessed as at 22, with the end of the slot being restricted as by swaging 85 so that the cushioning effect of the tongue gives further floating and self-seating advantages to the type mounting.
While I have described whatI consider to be highly desirable embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that many changes in form could be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I therefore, do not limit myself to the exact forms herein shown and described nor to anything less than the whole of my invention as hereinbefore set forth, and as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination: a type bar having a striking end shaped to provide side and end edges and a slot opening inwardly from said end edge; a type element fitting over said side edge and having depending portions flanking the opposite faces of said striking end; a clip in said slot having jaw members for yieldable gripping engagement with the depending portions of said type element for holding the latter in place on the type bar; and means for securing said clip in said slot.
2. In combination: a type bar having a striking end shaped to provide a side edge, an end edge and a slot opening inwardly from said end edge and having a seating groove in a wall of said slot; a type element fitting over said side edge and having depending portions flanking the opposite faces of said striking end; a clip in said slot having jaw members for yieldably gripping said type element to hold the same in place; and a tongue on said clip engaging the seating groove of said slot to secure said clip in the slot.
3.
