(ci. 711-462)- The present invention has for its subject a lock of the type comprising a bolt of the type adapted to be driven by a cylinder device actuated by a key and in whichrtheA lockbolt is adapted to be moved in translation by means of a catch pivotally mounted in the lock case and provided, with a pin passing through an opening ofthe lock bolt, said pin being vadapted to be actuated by an intermediate driving member for controlling the movements of translation of the lock bolt.
p The lock according to the invention is characterised in that said intermediate driving member is mounted in an adjustable manner on the end of the cylinder opposite to the keyhole, the said cylinder end and said member having the one, at least a' male part and the other at least a female part of such shape that they permit of rendering angularly fixed one to the other of the two parts iny four different positions, in such a manner -as to 4allow the mounting of the lock in at least four diierent positionslocatedrectangularly one relatively -to another, while retaining for the key the most correct position of operation considered to be the most favourable.
In general, the normal position of the key, considered to be the most favourable, is that in which the plane of symmetry of the key is vertical.

Figs. 5 and 6 show diagrammatically the position occupied by the lock bolt and the intermediate driving member in the retracted and projected position of theibolt, when this is mounted on aldoor pivoting about a horizontal axis, the lock being secured at the top and near the left hand end of the door.
Figs. 7 and 8 are diagrammatic views similar to the previously briey described embodiments in the case and in which the lock is mounted at the top and near the right hand end of the door.
This lock comprises a bolt formed Iby a lock case 1 in which is capable of sliding a lock bolt 2. The lock bolt 2 is adapted to be moved in translation by a catch 3 (see Figs. l and 2) pivotally mounted on a tubular part 4 formed integral with the lock case 1. A spring 5 is adapted to hold the catch 3 in the two retracted and projected positions of the bolt. The bolt is adapted to be moved by an intermediate driving member 6 partaking in the rotation of a cylinder device 7 controlled by the keyrS.

A transverse groove 12 (Fig. 3) is providedrat the end of the cylinder 7 to extend orthogonally relatively to the major axis of the cross-section of the bore 11. Thus the female parts 9 are formed on the one hand by the seating or bore 11 and on 'the other hand by the transverse groove 12.v Thus'the driving member 6 may be locatedY selectively in one of four different positions at the end of the cylinder 7, said four positionsbeing located along two axes which intersect at right angles.
The intermediate driving member 6 also has two oppositely vlocated projections 13 :adapted to co-operate with a projection 14 of the catch 3. The projection 14 passes through an opening 15 of the bolt 2. As shown particularly in Fig. 1, the opening 15 is located at the @centre of the -bolt and has a recess 16 extending toward one of the narrow edges of the bolt. yIt is also to be noted that the two end portions of the bolt 2 located on opposite sides of the -opening 15 are symmetrical. It is thus possible to place the bolt selectively in one of two positions located at relatively to one another in the lock case 1, this Vbeing for the purpose of making it possible `to place the bolt inthe closed position by turning the key either in a clockwise direction or in the.

As shown in Fig. 2, the cylinder device is secured to a plate 17 forming a'closing flange-for the lock case 1 and theyarious partsv of; the lock are held together by a screw 18 screwing into a threaded hole 19 of the case 1.

In Fig. 4, the lock is assumed to be mounted on a hinge with a yvertical axis located at the left of the lock. The lock is shown with the bolt in projected position. It is to be observed that this position corresponds to the retracted position of the bolt shown in Fig. 1. The mounting of the lock `according to Figs. l and 4 is thus eiected without changing the position of the member 6 relative to the cylinder 7.
In Figs. 5 and 6, the lock is assumed to be mounted on a door pivoting about a horizontal axis, the lock being fixed at the top and near the left hand end of the door. In this case the casing of the lock has been turned from its positions of Fig. 1 or 4 through a quarter, of a turn relative to the flange 17 on which the cylinder 7 lis mounted. However, lthe member 6 has `been moved through a quarter of a revolution relative to the cylinder 7. Thus the key normallyjretains the same position as that which it occupies in the case of Figs. 1 and 4.
yIt is also` tobe noted that thev threaded hole k194 and the screw'18 enable the assembly of the'various parts of the lock `to :be maintained both in the relative positions which they occupy in Figs. l and 4 and in the position which they occupy in Figs. 5 and 6. n Y
In Figs. 7 and 8, the lock is assumed to be mounted on a door pivotingabout a horizontal axis, V,the lock Vbeing secured near the top and to the right hand end of the door. In this case it lis preferred yto project thebolt of the lock by turning the key in a clockwise directionas inthe case of Ythe .mounting shown in Fig. 4. In the. latterV case illustrated,'the casing 1 of therlock occupies, relative to the flange 17, the same position as that shown in Figs.; 5 and 6. Qn theYc-ontrary `the member 6 has' been turned through 180 relative to the cylinder 7. Further, the bolt 2 has pivoted throughV l80rrelative to the lock casing -1 so that the notch 16 instead of being on the right hand portion of the bolt as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, is located on itsleft hand portion. Thus, when the bolt of the lock is in the retractedposition shown in Fig. 7 and itis to be brought into the closed Vpositi'on,'the key is first turned through half a turn idly in a clockwise direction 'so as to.
bring lthe upper projection 13 into contact with the projection 14.. By turning the key through `another half a turn, the catch 3 is moved by the member 6, this movement of the catch thus producing an upward movement, that is to say into the closed position, of thelock bolt 2.
Variousv modications in construction may be made in the lock described. Thus instead of the member 6 being capable of occupying selectively one of four different angular positions relatively to the cylinder, these two parts may be so arranged that the member 6 can only occupy selectively one of twodiierent positions located angularly 180 apart.
I claim:
1. A lock adapted to be driven positively both in opening and in closing, comprising, in combination, a casing member, Vsaid casing Ymember having side wall portions and top and bottom wall portions, each of said side wall portions having an opening therethrough, each openingy being opposite to the opening in the side wall portion opposite to its side wall portion, a bolt member s lidably mountedr within said casing for movement through the respective side wall portion, at said opening thereof, said bolt member having symmetrically shaped end portions,
said opening of said bolt member, a cylinder having a rectangularly shaped bore extending longitudinally therethrough, whereby a key may be seated therein, said cylinder being rotatably mounted with respect to said casing at the bottom wall surface thereof transversely of the plane in which said bolt slides and ,having at least its end portion positioned within said casing, said end portion of said cylinder having transverse grooves extenidng perpendicularly with respect to the major axis of said rectangularly shaped bore, a driving means for engaging said catch means at said projection thereof extending through said bolt member opening and for causing said bolt to j slide into its retracted or projected position, ,said driving said bolt member having an opening extending there` i through transversely of the plane in which said bolt slides, said opening being in the cent-ral portion of said,
bolt and having a recessed portion, the sideshof said recessed portion yextending toward the respective end portions ofthe bolt, catch means for sliding said bolt into its retracted and projected posit-ions with respect" to said casing, means for pivotally mounting said catch means between the inner surface of said top wall portion of the casing and the `top surface of said bolt member, said catch means including a projection extending through Cfr means being positioned between the bottomsurface of said bolt member and the end portion of said cylinder, said driving means including a first plurality of angularly spaced projection means for engaging said projection of said catch means and positioned in a plane transversely of said catchmeans projection and a second plurality of angularly spaced projection means for selectively engaging the cylinder end portion at opposite portions of said longitudinally positioned bore therethrough and the said transverse grooves, whereby said driving means may be selectively secured to said cylinder for rotation therewith and whereby the lock may be mounted on any one'ofY a plurality of doors to be opened in at least four different directions without changing thek position of the key to be inserted in the cylinder for opening and-closing the door.

The lock of claim l wherein said first plurality of said angularly spaced projection means of said driving means includes angularly movable projections spaced 180 from each other and said second plurality of angularly spaced projection means includes lug members spaced from each other.
