Application September 16, 1957, Serial No. 684,023
1 Claim. (Cl. 200-168) This invention relates to improvements in rotary switch covers for lamps, and more particularly to novel rotary switch covers of an ornamental type.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type which will cover a conventional rotary switch having a purely utilitarian appearance and which will share the artistic appearance of the lamp structure on which it is placed.
Another object of the invention is to provide ornamental shell covers for a rotary switch having internal ribs to engage grooves in the latter to facilitate manual operation of the rotary switch.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a view in elevation of a lamp equipped with rotary switch covers embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the covers and a conventional rotary switch.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the lamp base and switch covers.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the covers and switch.
Fig. 5 is a view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a View taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 3,
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 refers to a lamp base supporting a shade 11. The base 10 is formed in three segments of which the base proper is designated by the numeral 12. A switch portion separates the base 12 and the upper segment 14. The composite switch portion 13 comprises a center tubular portion 15 carrying the conventional rotary switch 16 which i provided with the external vertical grooves as at 17, and the ornamental cover shells 18 and 19 which are provided with a plurality of internal ribs 20 which engage in the grooves 17, whereby when the shells 18 and 19 are rotated manually, the rotary switch 16 will turn with them. The shells 18 and 19 may be constructed in many different ways and in an endless variety of ornamentation.
It will be understood that the invention may be adapted for use on either floor or table lamps, or in other uses, in any position on the lamp standards or the like.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In a lamp having a rotary switch disposed in the standard thereof, said rotary switch having spaced vertical grooves in the handle portion thereof, a pair of ornamental shells freely enclosing portions of said standard, and a plurality of inwardly pressed embossments on said shells engaging in said grooves whereby when the shells are manually rotated the switch will be operated.
