Definitions
- the invention relates in general to rotating devices and more particularly to remote controlled rotator units, especially for antennas wherein the remote control unit and the rotator unit are interconnected by only two conductors which may be the two lead-in conductors for the antenna and wherein the control unit contains an indicator and receives impulses from the rotator unit to establish the correct follow-up indication.
- Antenna rotators which have a remote control unit have previously been constructed; however, the present invention relates to a remote control rotator wherein only two wires need be used to interconnect the remote control unit and the rotator unit. Previously, at least three wires were required and often four or five wires in order to obtain a reversible rotational direction of the antenna rotator and to send some form of signal from the rotator unit down to the remote control unit so that the system would shut itself olf upon re-establishing alignment.
- the present invention solves the problem of using only two conductors or wires for interconnecting the rotator unit and the remote control unit; and since only two conductors are needed, it is possible to utilize the two lead-in wires of the typical high frequency dipole antenna to convey the electrical requirements of the rotator unit and remote control unit. This may be accomplished by using highpass filters to connect the radio device and the antenna to the lead-in wires and utilizing low-pass filters to connect the remote control unit and the rotator unit to the lead-in wires.
- An object of the invention s to provide an impulsing indicator and remote control unit interconnected by only two wires to a reversible rotator unit.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a remotely controlled rotator unit which is reversible in response to two different voltage conditions.
- Another object of the invention is to provide an impulsing indicator and remote control unit which is operable by first and second current conditions to change the indicator position.
- Another object of the invention is to provide low-pass and high-pass filters connected to antennanlead-in wires to separate the antenna high frequency currents from the control currents utilized between a remote control unit and a rotator unit.
- Another object of the invention is to provide in a remotely controlled rotator unit a motor driven switch which provides different current conditions which control an impulsing indicator and which furtherl control a switch energizing the rotator.
- Still another object of the invention is to provide a reversible direction rotator unit controlled by a manually reversible selector means and indicator means in a remote control unit interconnected by only two conductors.
- Still another object of the invention is to provide a voltage responsive electromagnetic means in a first unit controlled by a selector switch in a second unit to control the direction of rotation of a drive train in the first unit and With current responsive electromagnetic means in the secw Patented Nov. 18, 1958 2 ond unit controlled by an interrupter switch in the first unit to control the selector switch in the second unit.

- the two contact disks 39 and 40 are electrically connected together and connected to a terminal 41.
- the escapement wheel 25 carries' an insulator bar 42 which is parallel to the blades 34 and 35 and is wider than the width of the two blades.
- the blade 34 is adapted to make contact with a tongue 31 on the contact disk 40
- the blade 35 is adapted to make contact with a tongue 32 on the contact disk 39.
- the position of the detent wheel 21 controls the position of a primary switch contact 44, and the position of the escapement wheel 25 controls the position of a primary switch contact 45.
- the primary switch 44-45 is in an open condition, as caused by a cam 61 moved with wheel 25 and abuttable against switch contact 45.
- the primary switch 44-45 is connected in the energization leads to the primary 14.
- the terminal 18 is connected to the blade 35 by a conductor 46, and the terminal 17 is connected to the blade 34 by a conductor 47.
- the terminal 41 is the common terminal of the selector switch33, and it is connected to a winding 48 of a current relay 49.
- the other end of the winding 48 is connected by a conductor 50 to a terminal 51 of a low-pass filter 5,2.
- the other input terminal 53 of the low-pass filter 52 isl connected by a conductor 54 to the terminal 16.
- the low-pass filter 52 has output terminals 55 and 56 which are connected to lead-in wires 57 and 58.
- a high-pass filter 59 connects a radio device 60 to the lead-in .wires 57 and 58.
- the upper end of the lead-in wires 57 and 58 is connected through a second low-pass filter 68 to the rotator unit 12.
- the two lead-in wires are connected to an antenna 69 through a second high-pass filter 70.
- a voltage solenoid 71 is connected across the output terminals 72 and 73 of the low-pass filter 68.
- the voltage solenoid 71 has a movable core 74 and also controls a switch blade 75.
- the switch blade 75 co-operates with switch contacts 76 and 77.
- the switch contact 77 is connected through a choke 78 to a terminal 79 to which this switch contact 76 is connected.
- the motor in the rotator unit 12 is a single phase shaded pole induction motor 80 having one terminal connected to the terminal 79.
- the other terminal of the motor 80 is connected through an interrupter switch 81 to the terminal 72 of the filter 68.
- the motor 80 drives a speed reducing gear train 84 which has an output 85 connected to the shaft 86 of the antenna 69.
- the interrupter switch 81 is actuated by the gear train 84 and is designed to be only momentarily actuated to an open condition and cannot be maintained in an open position.
- the Figures 2 to 6 show the details of construction of the gear train 84.
- the rotator unit 12 includes a housing 89 which encloses the motor 80.
- the motor 80 has a drive shaft 90 carrying a drive pinion 91.
- the drive pinion 91 meshes with an idler pinion 92 and with a first drive gear 93.
- the idler pinio-n 92 meshes with a second drive gear 94.
- the Figure 5 shows to an enlarged scale that the drive gears 93 and 94 are coaxial and mounted on hubs 95 and 96, respectively, which are journaled on an intermediate shaft 97. Because of the idler pinion 92, the drive gears 93 and 94 rotate in opposite directions.
- the intermediate shaft 97 is axially connected to the solenoid core 74 as shown in Figure 1.
- the intermediate shaft 97 may axially move to the right from a first limit position as shown in Figure 5 to a second limit position.
- the shaft 97 carried pins 98 and 99 with the pin 98 receivable in a recess 100 in the hub 95 and engageable with a drive lug 102 on the inner periphery of this recess 100.
- the pin 99 is receivable in a recess 101 in the hub 96 and engageable with a drive lug 103 in this recess 101.
- the recesses 100 and 101 are oppositely disposed; and hence, the pins 98 and 99 are alternately engageable with the drive lugs 102 and 103. These pins and lugs thus form a positive clutch with the intermediate shaft 97 being drivingly connected to the drive gear 94 in the position shown in Figure 5. Alternately, upon movement of the intermediate shaft to the right to the second limit position, the second drive gear 94 is disengaged from the shaft 97 and the second drive gear 93 is placed in driving connection with the shaft 97.
- the pull of the solenoid 71 is to the right as viewed in Figure 5, and the gear train 84 may be disposed so that gravity will urge the shaft 97 to the left to the first limit position or a spring means may be utilized for this urging.
- the intermediate shaft 97 drives a pinion 104 which connects through additional gearing 105 to drive a shaft mount 106.
- a cam disk 107 is driven from the drive train 84 to momentarily actuate the interrupter switch 81 to an open condition
- the rotator unit 12 is a reversible unit which will rotate the antenna shaft 86 in either rotational direction and in so doing will momentarily open the interrupter switch 81.
- the remote control unit 11 controls the operation of the rotator unit 12 and further contains an indicator 24.
- the operator will grasp the knob 19 to rotate it in either direction. If it is rotated clockwise, for example, the shaft 20, the detent wheel 21, and the pointer 23 all move clockwise.
- the escapement wheel 25 remains stationary since it is held by the tongue 29 of the verge 26.
- the insulator bar 42 remains stationary, and the primary switch 44 45 closes because of the non-alignment of the detent wheel 21 and escapement wheel 25. This energizes the transformer 13.
- the blade 34 electrically contacts the tongue 31 on the contact disk 40.
- the voltage solenoid 71 is voltage responsive and has insufficient pull on twelve volts to move the core 74 into the solenoid 71.
- the shaft 97 is in the position shown in Figure 5 for a drive connection through drive gear 94. This will rotate thel antenna shaft 86 in the appropriate direction.
- the interrupter switch 81 is momentarily 'actuated by the cam disk 107. This momentarily opens the series circuit ofl the switch 81 and motor 80. During this momentary interruption the load on the secondary 15 will be considerably reduced since only the voltage solenoid 71 is being energized in the rotator unit 12 rather than the solenoid 71 plus the motor 80.
- the current relay 49 in the remote control unit 11l is responsive to this change in current.
- the current relay 49 Upon initial energization of the motor 80, the current relay 49 would be energized to rock the verge 26 causing tongue 30 to be in engagement with the escapement wheel 25.
- the current relay 49 will drop out to rock the verge 26. This will cause a step-by-step arcuate movement of the escapement wheel 25 for each interruption by the interrupter switch 81. This will continue until the indicator 24 again becomes aligned with the pointer 23 whereupon the primary switch 44-45 will be opened.
- the knob 19 may be rotated in a counterclockwise direction which means that the transformer 13 will again become energized, the blade 35 will electrically contact the tongue 32 of the contact disk 39 to place twenty-four volts across the terminals 51 and 53. With this higher voltage, the voltage solenoid 71 will be energized sufficiently to move the core 74 into the solenoid 71, and hence, clutch 99-103 will be disengaged and clutch 98-102 will become engaged. This will rotate the antenna shaft in a direction opposite to that formerly effected. The cam disk 107 will again periodically actuate the interrupter switch 81 to control the current relay 49. The actuatio'n of the voltage solenoid 71 will close switch blade 75 against contact 77 which will place in series with the motor 80, the choke 78. This makes more nearly Constant the current supplied to the motor 80 and to the current relay 49.
- FIG. 7 shows another modification of the invention.
- a remote control unit contains many parts similar to those shown in the remote control unit 11, and hence, is marked with the same reference numbers.
- The' blade 34 is connected by a conductor 116 through a dry disk rectifier 1,18- to a terminal 120.
- the blade 35 isl connected by a conductor 117 through a dry disk rectifier 119 to the terminal 120.
- the rectifiers 118' and 119 vinterrupter switch to an open condition.
- a conductor 121 interconnects the terminal 120 and a terminal 122 on a solenoid 123.
- the solenoid 123 has first and second windings 124 and 125.
- the winding 124 has a second terminal 126, and the winding 125 has a second terminal 127.
- the terminal 126 is connected by a conductor 128 to a terminal 129 ofV a secondary 130 of a transformer 131.
- a terminal 132 of the secondary 130 is connected by a conductor 133 to the terminal 41.
- the conductor 128 connects to the low-pass filter 52, and a conductor 134 connects the terminal 127 to the low-pass filter 52.
- the lead-in wires 57 and 58 are again connected to a second low-pass filter 68 having terminals 72 and 73.
- a direct current permanent magnet motor 138 is connected in series with the interrupter switch 81 across the terminals 72 and 73.
- the motor 138 drives the antenna shaft 86 through a drive train 139 which includes the cam disk 107 actuated by the interrupter switch 81.
- the circuit of Figure 7 again uses an impulsing indicator and a control unit 115 to control a rotator unit 114.
- the transformer 131 Will become energized' and the blade 34 will conduct current through the rectifier 118, through the winding 125, to the low-pass filter 52.
- This will supply direct current of one polarity to the direct current motor 138 causing it to rotate in a particular direction.
- the current flow through the direct current motor 138 plus the permanent magnet in this motor is a combined electrical and magnetic means which determines the direction of rotation.
- the speed reducing drive train 139 will thus rotate the antenna shaft 86 in the appropriate direction.
- the cam disk 107 will momentarily actuate the This will deenergze the solenoid winding 125.
- the solenoid winding 124 remains energized continuously from the secondary 130 through conductors 133 and 128 and the selected one of the rectifiers 118 and 119.
- the windings 124 and 125 are wound in opposition and of equal ampere turns so that upon de-energization of the winding 125 by the opening of the interrupter switch 81, the solenoid 123 will exert a pull to rock the verge 26.
- the solenoid 123 will be efiectively neutralized by equal and opposite energization on the windings 124 and 125. This releases the verge 126 under the urging of the spring 28.
- the escapement wheel 25 will thus step-by-stepangularly move to a position coinciding with the selected position of the knob 19 and pointer 23.
- a counterclockwise rotation of the knob 19 will cause the blade 35 to make contact with the tongue 32; and hence, current will fiow through the rectifier 119.
- Each o-f the windings 124 and 125 will thus have current fioW therethrough in a direction opposite to that which was formerly effected. However, these two windings are still equally and oppositely energized so that there is no pull on the verge 26.
- the opposite polarity of direct current combined with the magnetic field of the permanent magnet, will cause the direct current motor 138 to rotate in the opposite direction and hence rotate the antenna shaft 86 in the opposite direction.
- the power current and control signals on the two conductors 57 and 58 is of power frequency, such as sixty cycle, or is direct current which in either event will be passed by the low-pass filters 52 and 68 which have low impedance to low frequency and high impedance to high frequency.
- the radio signals such as H. F., -V. H. F., or U. H. F., are passed from the antenna 69 through the high-pass filters 70 and 59 to the radio device 60. These high-pass filters will have high impedance to low frequency and direct current and low impedance to high frequency.

19 Claims. (Cl. 343-766) The invention relates in general to rotating devices and more particularly to remote controlled rotator units, especially for antennas wherein the remote control unit and the rotator unit are interconnected by only two conductors which may be the two lead-in conductors for the antenna and wherein the control unit contains an indicator and receives impulses from the rotator unit to establish the correct follow-up indication.
Antenna rotators which have a remote control unit have previously been constructed; however, the present invention relates to a remote control rotator wherein only two wires need be used to interconnect the remote control unit and the rotator unit. Previously, at least three wires were required and often four or five wires in order to obtain a reversible rotational direction of the antenna rotator and to send some form of signal from the rotator unit down to the remote control unit so that the system would shut itself olf upon re-establishing alignment. The present invention solves the problem of using only two conductors or wires for interconnecting the rotator unit and the remote control unit; and since only two conductors are needed, it is possible to utilize the two lead-in wires of the typical high frequency dipole antenna to convey the electrical requirements of the rotator unit and remote control unit. This may be accomplished by using highpass filters to connect the radio device and the antenna to the lead-in wires and utilizing low-pass filters to connect the remote control unit and the rotator unit to the lead-in wires.
An object of the invention s to provide an impulsing indicator and remote control unit interconnected by only two wires to a reversible rotator unit.
Another object of the invention is to provide a remotely controlled rotator unit which is reversible in response to two different voltage conditions.
Another object of the invention is to provide an impulsing indicator and remote control unit which is operable by first and second current conditions to change the indicator position.
Another object of the invention is to provide low-pass and high-pass filters connected to antennanlead-in wires to separate the antenna high frequency currents from the control currents utilized between a remote control unit and a rotator unit.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a remotely controlled rotator unit a motor driven switch which provides different current conditions which control an impulsing indicator and which furtherl control a switch energizing the rotator.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a reversible direction rotator unit controlled by a manually reversible selector means and indicator means in a remote control unit interconnected by only two conductors.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a voltage responsive electromagnetic means in a first unit controlled by a selector switch in a second unit to control the direction of rotation of a drive train in the first unit and With current responsive electromagnetic means in the secw Patented Nov. 18, 1958 2 ond unit controlled by an interrupter switch in the first unit to control the selector switch in the second unit.

Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the preferred embodiment of the invention;
.Figure 2 is an end viewlof the rotator unit used in Figure l;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 3;

Figure 6 is a partial view on the line 6-6 of Figure 5; and
Figure 7 is a schematic diagram of a modified form of the invention' The Figures 1 to 6 show the preferred form of the invention with Figure 1 schematically showing a remote control unit 11 and a rotator unit 12. The construction of the rotator unit 12 is shown in the Figures 2 to 6. The remote control unit 11 includes a transformer 13 having a primary l4connectable to an alternating current source. The transformer 13 also has a center tapped secondary 15 having terminals 16, 17, and 18. Twelve volts are obtained between terminals 16 and 17, and twenty-four volts are obtained across the end terminals 16 and 18. A knob 19 is fastened to a shaft 20 and a detent wheel 21 is fastened to the shaft 20. A detent 22 holds the detent wheel 21 in any selected rotational position. An escapement Wheel 25 is also journalled to the shaft 20 and is controlled by a r-ockable verge 26. The knob 19 carries a pointer 23 which co-operates with an indicator 24 moved in accordance with the movement of the escapement wheel 25. The verge 26 is pivoted at 27, and a spring 28 urges a tooth 29 of the verge 26 into engagement with the escapement wheel 25. When the verge 26 is rocked against the urging of the spring 28, a tooth 30 of the verge engages the escapement wheel 25 and thus permits step-by-step movement of this escapement wheel.
The detent wheel 21 carries a secondary selector switch 33 which is a double throw switch. The selector switch 33 includes first and second blades 34 and 35 insulatively carried on the detent wheel 21. These blades lie parallel to the shaft 20. A coil spring 36 has a first end 37 carried by a contact disk 39 and has a second end 38 carried by a second contact disk 40. The two contact disks 39 and 40 are electrically connected together and connected to a terminal 41. The escapement wheel 25 carries' an insulator bar 42 which is parallel to the blades 34 and 35 and is wider than the width of the two blades. The blade 34 is adapted to make contact with a tongue 31 on the contact disk 40, and the blade 35 is adapted to make contact with a tongue 32 on the contact disk 39.
The position of the detent wheel 21 controls the position of a primary switch contact 44, and the position of the escapement wheel 25 controls the position of a primary switch contact 45. When the detent wheel 21 and escapement wheel 25 are aligned, the primary switch 44-45 is in an open condition, as caused by a cam 61 moved with wheel 25 and abuttable against switch contact 45. The primary switch 44-45 is connected in the energization leads to the primary 14. l
The terminal 18 is connected to the blade 35 by a conductor 46, and the terminal 17 is connected to the blade 34 by a conductor 47. The terminal 41 is the common terminal of the selector switch33, and it is connected to a winding 48 of a current relay 49. The other end of the winding 48 is connected by a conductor 50 to a terminal 51 of a low-pass filter 5,2. The other input terminal 53 of the low-pass filter 52 isl connected by a conductor 54 to the terminal 16. The low-pass filter 52 has output terminals 55 and 56 which are connected to lead-in wires 57 and 58. A high-pass filter 59 connects a radio device 60 to the lead-in .wires 57 and 58.
The upper end of the lead-in wires 57 and 58 is connected through a second low-pass filter 68 to the rotator unit 12. The two lead-in wires are connected to an antenna 69 through a second high-pass filter 70. A voltage solenoid 71 is connected across the output terminals 72 and 73 of the low-pass filter 68. The voltage solenoid 71 has a movable core 74 and also controls a switch blade 75. The switch blade 75 co-operates with switch contacts 76 and 77. The switch contact 77 is connected through a choke 78 to a terminal 79 to which this switch contact 76 is connected. The motor in the rotator unit 12 is a single phase shaded pole induction motor 80 having one terminal connected to the terminal 79. The other terminal of the motor 80 is connected through an interrupter switch 81 to the terminal 72 of the filter 68. The motor 80 drives a speed reducing gear train 84 which has an output 85 connected to the shaft 86 of the antenna 69. The interrupter switch 81 is actuated by the gear train 84 and is designed to be only momentarily actuated to an open condition and cannot be maintained in an open position.
The Figures 2 to 6 show the details of construction of the gear train 84. The rotator unit 12 includes a housing 89 which encloses the motor 80. The motor 80 has a drive shaft 90 carrying a drive pinion 91. The drive pinion 91 meshes with an idler pinion 92 and with a first drive gear 93. The idler pinio-n 92 meshes with a second drive gear 94. The Figure 5 shows to an enlarged scale that the drive gears 93 and 94 are coaxial and mounted on hubs 95 and 96, respectively, which are journaled on an intermediate shaft 97. Because of the idler pinion 92, the drive gears 93 and 94 rotate in opposite directions. The intermediate shaft 97 is axially connected to the solenoid core 74 as shown in Figure 1. Thus, the intermediate shaft 97 may axially move to the right from a first limit position as shown in Figure 5 to a second limit position. The shaft 97 carried pins 98 and 99 with the pin 98 receivable in a recess 100 in the hub 95 and engageable with a drive lug 102 on the inner periphery of this recess 100. Similarly, the pin 99 is receivable in a recess 101 in the hub 96 and engageable with a drive lug 103 in this recess 101. The recesses 100 and 101 are oppositely disposed; and hence, the pins 98 and 99 are alternately engageable with the drive lugs 102 and 103. The pull of the solenoid 71 is to the right as viewed in Figure 5, and the gear train 84 may be disposed so that gravity will urge the shaft 97 to the left to the first limit position or a spring means may be utilized for this urging. The intermediate shaft 97 drives a pinion 104 which connects through additional gearing 105 to drive a shaft mount 106. A cam disk 107 is driven from the drive train 84 to momentarily actuate the interrupter switch 81 to an open condition.
Operation The rotator unit 12 is a reversible unit which will rotate the antenna shaft 86 in either rotational direction and in so doing will momentarily open the interrupter switch 81. The remote control unit 11 controls the operation of the rotator unit 12 and further contains an indicator 24. The operator will grasp the knob 19 to rotate it in either direction. If it is rotated clockwise, for example, the shaft 20, the detent wheel 21, and the pointer 23 all move clockwise. The escapement wheel 25 remains stationary since it is held by the tongue 29 of the verge 26. Thus, the insulator bar 42 remains stationary, and the primary switch 44 45 closes because of the non-alignment of the detent wheel 21 and escapement wheel 25. This energizes the transformer 13. The blade 34 electrically contacts the tongue 31 on the contact disk 40. This completes the circuit of the secondary 15 from the terminal 17 through the conductor 47, the blade 34, contact disk 40, terminal 41, current relay 49, conductor 50, to the terminal 51 of the filter 52. The terminal 16 of the secondary is connected by conductor 54 to the terminal 53 of the filter 52. This places twelve volts across terminals 51 and 53. These twelve volts are passed by the low-pass filter 52 through the lead-in wires and lowpass filter 68 to the rotator unit 12.
The voltage solenoid 71 is voltage responsive and has insufficient pull on twelve volts to move the core 74 into the solenoid 71. Thus, the shaft 97 is in the position shown in Figure 5 for a drive connection through drive gear 94. This will rotate thel antenna shaft 86 in the appropriate direction. As the shaft 86 rotates, the interrupter switch 81 is momentarily 'actuated by the cam disk 107. This causes a considerable `current change, and the current relay 49 in the remote control unit 11l is responsive to this change in current. Upon initial energization of the motor 80, the current relay 49 would be energized to rock the verge 26 causing tongue 30 to be in engagement with the escapement wheel 25. During the momentary interruptions caused by the interrupter switch 81 the current relay 49 will drop out to rock the verge 26. This will cause a step-by-step arcuate movement of the escapement wheel 25 for each interruption by the interrupter switch 81. This will continue until the indicator 24 again becomes aligned with the pointer 23 whereupon the primary switch 44-45 will be opened.
The knob 19 may be rotated in a counterclockwise direction which means that the transformer 13 will again become energized, the blade 35 will electrically contact the tongue 32 of the contact disk 39 to place twenty-four volts across the terminals 51 and 53.
Details of construction of the remote control unit 11 and rotator unit 12 may be similar to that shown in the copending Application Serial No. 190,506, filed October 17, 1950, entitled Remote Control Impulsing Rotaton now Patent No. 2,682,628, issued June 29, 1954.
The Figure 7 shows another modification of the invention. A remote control unit contains many parts similar to those shown in the remote control unit 11, and hence, is marked with the same reference numbers. The' blade 34 is connected by a conductor 116 through a dry disk rectifier 1,18- to a terminal 120. The blade 35 isl connected by a conductor 117 through a dry disk rectifier 119 to the terminal 120. The rectifiers 118' and 119 vinterrupter switch to an open condition.
asemes are connected 'in oppos'ition relative to the terminal 120. A conductor 121 interconnects the terminal 120 and a terminal 122 on a solenoid 123. The solenoid 123 has first and second windings 124 and 125. -The winding 124 has a second terminal 126, and the winding 125 has a second terminal 127. The terminal 126 is connected by a conductor 128 to a terminal 129 ofV a secondary 130 of a transformer 131. A terminal 132 of the secondary 130 is connected by a conductor 133 to the terminal 41. The conductor 128 connects to the low-pass filter 52, and a conductor 134 connects the terminal 127 to the low-pass filter 52. The lead-in wires 57 and 58 are again connected to a second low-pass filter 68 having terminals 72 and 73. A direct current permanent magnet motor 138 is connected in series with the interrupter switch 81 across the terminals 72 and 73. The motor 138 drives the antenna shaft 86 through a drive train 139 which includes the cam disk 107 actuated by the interrupter switch 81.
Operation The circuit of Figure 7 again uses an impulsing indicator and a control unit 115 to control a rotator unit 114. When the operator turns the knob 19 clockwise, the transformer 131 Will become energized' and the blade 34 will conduct current through the rectifier 118, through the winding 125, to the low-pass filter 52. This will supply direct current of one polarity to the direct current motor 138 causing it to rotate in a particular direction. iThe current flow through the direct current motor 138 plus the permanent magnet in this motor is a combined electrical and magnetic means which determines the direction of rotation. The speed reducing drive train 139 will thus rotate the antenna shaft 86 in the appropriate direction. The cam disk 107 will momentarily actuate the This will deenergze the solenoid winding 125. The solenoid winding 124 remains energized continuously from the secondary 130 through conductors 133 and 128 and the selected one of the rectifiers 118 and 119. The windings 124 and 125 are wound in opposition and of equal ampere turns so that upon de-energization of the winding 125 by the opening of the interrupter switch 81, the solenoid 123 will exert a pull to rock the verge 26. When the intermpter switch 81 again clo-ses after its momentary open condition, the solenoid 123 will be efiectively neutralized by equal and opposite energization on the windings 124 and 125. This releases the verge 126 under the urging of the spring 28. The escapement wheel 25 will thus step-by-stepangularly move to a position coinciding with the selected position of the knob 19 and pointer 23. The
mechanism will shut itself off upon re-alignment of the pointer 23 and indicator 24.
A counterclockwise rotation of the knob 19 will cause the blade 35 to make contact with the tongue 32; and hence, current will fiow through the rectifier 119. Each o-f the windings 124 and 125 will thus have current fioW therethrough in a direction opposite to that which was formerly effected. However, these two windings are still equally and oppositely energized so that there is no pull on the verge 26. The opposite polarity of direct current, combined with the magnetic field of the permanent magnet, will cause the direct current motor 138 to rotate in the opposite direction and hence rotate the antenna shaft 86 in the opposite direction. Again, the momentary actuation of the interrupter switch 81 will periodically de-energize the solenoid winding 125 to rock the verge 26, and hence, permit re-alignment of the pointer 23 and indicator 24 to de-energize the remote control unit 115 as well as the rotator unit 114.
In Figures 1 and 7 it may be noted that there is a voltage responsive electromagnetic means in the rotator unit Controlled by a selector switch in the control unit to control the direction of rotation and further that there Lis a current responsive electromagnetic means in the controlunit controlled by the interrupter switch in the rotator unit to control the selector switch in the control unit.
The requirement of only two conductors interconnecting the rotator and control units makes possible the utilization of the lead-in wires 57 and 58 as the current carrying conductors for the power to the rotator unit as well as the signals sent back from the rotator unit to control the selector switch in the control unit. Further, these two conductors carry power current which has two different voltage conditions so that a voltage responsive electrom-agnetic means in the rotator unit may determine the correct direction of rotation of the antenna shaft.
The power current and control signals on the two conductors 57 and 58 is of power frequency, such as sixty cycle, or is direct current which in either event will be passed by the low- pass filters 52 and 68 which have low impedance to low frequency and high impedance to high frequency. Further, the radio signals, such as H. F., -V. H. F., or U. H. F., are passed from the antenna 69 through the high- pass filters 70 and 59 to the radio device 60. These high-pass filters will have high impedance to low frequency and direct current and low impedance to high frequency.
Although this invention has been described in its preferred form with a certain degree of particularity, it is understood that. the present disclosure of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
