1 Claim. (Cl. 210-223) This invention relates to improvements in oil lters, and more particularly to a novel oil filter containing novel magnetic separation means.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type provided with a twin magnet plate which will separate magnetic particles from the oil subjected to the filter.
Another object of the invention is to provide an oil filter having a magnetic plate which can easily be removed and replaced.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing7 in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of an oil lilter ernbodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view taken on line 22 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the magnet retaining plate viewed from the under side.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral refers to the device generally, having a container 11 provided with a cover member 12. Centrally of the container 11 is a vertical tubular member 13 having spaced apertures as at 14 and open at the lower end at 15. An oil inlet port is provided at 16 of the conical. lower container wall 17. The upper end 18 of the tubular member 13 is closed by an upwardly open threaded socket 19.
The tubular element 13 is provided with the circular shoulder 20 spaced from the lower end 21 thereof. A circular plate 22 has a pair of laterally extending tabs 23 and 24 in the blank, and the latter are rolled to em- Patented Nov. 1%, 1958 brace and retain a pair of magnets 25 and 26. Each magnet is held against longitudinal movement by the stops 27, 28, 29 and 30 struck down from the blank.
When assembled, the circular plate 22 with the retained magnets 25 and 26 thereunder is placed on the shoulder 20. A conventional oil cartridge 31 is placed thereon over the tubular element 13. A Washer 32 is placed laterally of the socket 19 over the oil cartridge 31, and the coil compression spring 33 is placed thereon. The bolt 34 is applied through the Washer 35, the cover 12 and the spring 33 and threaded into the socket 19 and tightened to hold the cover 12 securely,
In use, the oil enters through the inlet port at 16 of the conical lower wall 17 of container 11, circulating under the plate 22 and magnets 25 and 26, which latter will attract and retain metallic elements afloat in said oil. The oil then passes through the lter cartridge 31and passes by means of apertures 14 into the vertical tubular member 13 and thence downwardly and out through the lower end at 15.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In combination with a conventional container for an oil filter cartridge in a vehicle oil system, a filter cartridge, a circular metal plate having a circular central aperture disposed freely under said cartridge, a pair of cylindrical permanent magnets, tab means oppositely laterally integral with said plate embracing the magnets and securing the same thereto, and stops struck from the plate engaging the ends of said magnets to prevent longitudinal displacement thereof.
