RAWE SECURING DEVICE FOR V E-BAGS IN VALVE-BAG MANUFACTURI MACHINES Filed Oct. 1. 1954 Patented Nov. ll, T958 SECURING DEVICE FOR VALVE-BAGS IN VALVE- The present invention relates to a device for securing the valve-inserts inserted into valve-bags in correct position during the closing of the bottoms of the bags in a valve-bag manufacturing machine.
In paper-bag manufacturing machines of this kind it frequently happens that the valve-insert moves out of its correct position during the closing of the bottom of the bag, in which case, when hose-shaped valve-inserts are employed, leakage occurs at or beside the valve opening, which may be the cause of considerable trouble when the valve-bags-are used.
The object of the invention is to overcome this deficiency in the manufacture of valve-bags through the provision of holding means for. the valve-insert during the closing of the bottom of the bags.
For this purpose the invention provides the valve-bag manufacturing machine with holding means adapted to seize the valve-insert. The holding means are moved at the same speed as the valve-bag and are mounted to meet.

These holding means consist preferably of pins which pierce the bottom of the paper bag and the valve-insert and thereby secure the valve-insert in it correct position during the closing of the bottom. Additional features and advantages of the invention will be understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica tion and in which an embodiment of the invention has been shown by way of example. However, the invention is not limited to the example shown in the drawings, but includes any changes or modifications which mark no material departure from the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral 1 designates the valve-positioning-roller which seats the preferably hose-shaped valve-inserts 2 in the bottom of the valve-bag 3a fed into the machine on platform 3b as indicated by the arrow 3. Arranged above the device for the closing of the valve-bag-bottoni around the valve-insert 2 through folding of the lateral flaps of the bottom of the bag in downward direction, is positioned the holding device for the'valve-insert during the closing of the bottom. The holding device of the invention comprises a supporting member 4 of angular shape provided with chain- wheels 5, 6 and 7 and with a guide-wheel 8 for an endless chain 9, serving as movable pins are fastened in holding members 11 exchangeably secured by means of screw-threads or the like to the chain-links of the endless chain 9. The angular supporting member 4 is pivotally mounted with a supporting arm 12 which is adjustably fastened and secured in its adjusted position by mean of clamping screws 14 to a stationary bolt of the machine frame or to a shaft 13. In addition to this, the angular supporting member 4 can be pivoted with the supporting arm 12 about the driving shaft 22 for the chain-wheel 6 in upward direction into the dot-and-dash-line position. The member 4 may be thereby put out of action when disturbances occur and are to be removed in the bottom-closing-device underneath it. Through rotation of the supporting arm 12 about the bolt 13, after loosening of the clamping screws 14, the height of the angular supporting member 4 and of the endless chain 9 as well as the piercing depth of the holding pins 10 can be adjusted, and secured in the adjusted position by retightening of the clamping screws 14. The angular supporting member 4 is provided at its free end with a handle 15 for moving it out of its operating position in an upward direction. For the support of the supporting member 4 in the lifted dot-and-dash-line position illustrated in Fig. 1 the machine frame is provided with a movable spring-loaded supporting arm 17 provided with stop 23, while the supporting member 4 is provided with a cooperating stop 18. For rotating the supporting member 4 back into working position, the movable supporting arm may be swung temporarily against the action of its spring out of reach of the stop 18.
The third chain-wheel 7 is mounted on axle 19 adjustably supported in an elongated hole or slot 20, for tensioning of the endless chain 9.
The holding members 11 of the pins 10 are screwed into laterally projecting portions 21 of the chain-links of the endless chain 9. The chain-Wheel 6 mounted on the shaft 22, is driven by means of gear wheels, driving chains, belts'or the like. There are preferably two holding pins 10 arranged in parallel to every chain-link. When the bag 3a and the preferably hose-shaped valve-insert 2 move simultaneously into the position shown in Fig. 2 above the valve-seating-roller 1, the holding pins pierce the valvebag-bottom and the valve-insert 2 and thereby secure them in correct position relative to each other during the closing of the bag-bottom. The holding pins with the bag bottom and the valve pinned together travel over platform 3b in the direction of arrow 3. Only when the endless chain 9 and the holding pins 10 fastened to it are passing the driving wheel 6, that is, after the valve bag-bottom has already been closed through downward folding of the lateral flaps of the bottom, the holding pins 10 are automatically withdrawn from the bottom of the valve-bag 3a and from the valve-insert 2. The actuation of the endless chain 9 is effected in synchronized cooperation with the actuation of the valve-bag machine or with the bottom-folding device always in such manner that, a valve-bag, a valve-insert and the pair of holding pins arrive simultaneously at the valve-seating-point. The pins 10 automatically then penetrate into the valve-bag bottom and into the valve-insert and secure both of them in correct position with respect to each other until the bottom of the bag has been closed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A device for securing the correct position of the valve-inserts inserted into the open bottom of the travelling valve bags during the closing operation of the bag bottoms in a valve bag manufacturing machine, comprising in combination with the valve-insert feeding means of the valve bag manufacturing machine, movable position securing means for the valve-insert to the valve bag bottom oppositely disposed to the latter and to said valveinsert feeding means and consisting of a movable endless chain having links, laterally projecting portions at said links, threaded supporting members exehangeably'fiastened. by means of their threads in said projecting portions, and.
piercing pins rigidly secured in said thread-ed supporting members adapted to pierce said valve bag bottomrand the oppositely inserted valve-insert to secure the (:Qljititlt. position of both parts to each other during the; closing operation of the bag bottom, said movable endless chain being adapted to move parallel to the path of said travelling valve bag from the beginning of the insertion of the valve insert in the bag bottom to the end of the closing operation of the latter with a speed synchronized with the speed of the valve bag motion.
2. A device for securing the correct position of the valve-inserts inserted into the open bottom of the travelling valve bags during the closing operation of the bag bottoms in a valve bag manufacturing machine, comprising in combination with the valve-insert feeding means of the valve bag manufacturing machine, movable positionsecuring means for the valve-insert to the valve bag bottom oppositely disposed to said valve-insert feeding means and consisting of a supporting arm adjustably fastened at one end at the valve hag manufacturing machine, an angle-lever provided at its angle-corner and at its free ends with rotatably arranged chain wheels and being rotatably arranged at its angle-corner at the free end of said supporting-arm, an endless chain disposed on said .chain wheels and having links, and piercing pins attached to said links for piercing said valve bag bottom and the oppositely inserted valve-insert to secure the correct position of the latter to the valve bag bottom during the closing of the valve bottom, and driving means coupled .to the chain-wheel at the angle-corner of the angle-lever and adapted to rotate said endless chain parallel to the path of the travelling valve bag during the closing of-the bag bottom with a speed synchronized with the speed of the valve bag motion.
3. In a valve-bag manufacturing apparatus providing continuous supply of open bag blanks having bag-bottom flaps, a device for securing valve inserts in correct position during the closing of the bottomof each bag relative whereafter said holding pin is released from said pinning engagement.
4. A device as claimed in claim 3, wherein said valve insert continuous delivery and positioning means further comprise a rotatable wheel mounted with its periphery at one point adjacent to the meeting place .of said bags and to it, comprising in combination: a valve-insert continuous delivery-and positioning-means to position one said of said'holding pins, said wheel provided at its periphery with means to convey said valve insert toward said meeting place.
5. A device as claimed in claim 3, wherein said chain comprises additional means for rigidly securing exchangeably at least one said holding pin in each link of said chain.

Adevice as claimed in claim 3, wherein said holding pins continuous advance and positioning means further comprise a supporting arm adjustably fastened at one end of the housing of the valve-bag manufacturing machine, and angle-lever provided at its angle-corner and at its free ends with rotatably arranged chain wheels, said endless chain mounted on said chain wheels at least one said holding pin fastened to each link of said endless chain.
7,. A device as claimed in claim 3, further comprising means to remove said holding pins continuous advance and positioning means from the said meeting point of said valve-insert of said bag and of said holding pins by manual reciprocation.
8. A device as claimed in claim '3, further comprising means to adjust the depth penetration of said holding pins at the said meeting point of said valve-insert, bag, and holding pins.
