tCiairns. (Cl. 40126) The present invention relates generally to cake dummies and to foldable blanks therefor, and in particular to blanks which are foldable into the form of a cylinder with an open base and a closed base, to be used as a cake dummy. Y
It is a practice in bakeries to display frosted cakes in. a window or case, such display being usually dummies in the form of cakes covered with frosting. Also, in catering schools, such dummies are used for cakes in training for the artistry of frosting.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a single piece of foldable flat material as a blank which is readily converted into the form of a cake to be used as a cake dummy.
It is a particular object of the invention to provide a cake dummy in flat blank form which can be folded and united without use of any instrument or additional means or material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cake dummy with a cylindrical wall and a flat top and with internal vertical supports for the flat top.
Various other and ancillary objects and advantages of the invention will become apparentfrom the following description and explanation of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

In general, the blank includes a substantially circular section or cylinder base on the periphery of which there are narrow hinging score linesintegrally connecting the base with a plurality of tangential strips which are to con-,

provided with interlocking means so that they may form a continuous cylindrical wall. The strips may be two or more in number. The more strips there are, the more regions there are of integral connections between cylindrical wall and base. Also, the more strips there are, the shorter the strips may be with appropriate decrease in a dimension of the blank.
It has been found that four wall-forming strips of identical shape and size permit the blank to be made in the general form of a square'with a minimum loss or waste of material. Fig. 1 shows such a form having a base or circular section of which the major extent of the periphery is a cut edge designated 11. The periphery at 90 regions is formed by short straight folding scores illustrated by dotted hinging lines 12 which serve as integral connections of the base it) to the four wall-forming strips designated 13.
Each strip 13 is tangential to the base 10 and all have the same width which becomes the height of the cake dummy. The tongue-end 15 coacts with a tongue-receiving slot 20 therefor, both tongue and slotformed and positioned to unite adjacent strips with a minimum departure from a trulycylindrical connection. As shown, the interlocking means includes in addition to tongue and slot, mutual interlocking slots. Commonly, such interlocking means results in strain and stress. By locating the regions of the tongue and slot connection in the vicinity of the hinge 12, as by positioningtheslot 20 in line with the hinge 12, the tendency of each tongue-end 1510 move each receiving strip outwardly, is resisted by the tie at the hinge.
The horizontal slot 20 has at one end a vertical extension 20'. Tongue 23 (Fig. 2) slips into the horizontal portion 20 and the peak 22 of the notch adjacent tongue 23 moves to the terminal end of the slot extension 20', as shown in Fig. 3. These parts fit together as indicated in Figs. 2' and 3. That portion of the tongue-end. 15 which would lie directly outside the hinge line 12 is cut off as shown by the line 24.
Fig. 4 shows the completed cake dummy inverted to indicate the position of the'wing-ends 14 of the strips 13 as they are turned inwardly to give vertical support to the base 10, for example, to resist the'weight of frosting applied to the top.
In "the preferred form illustrated, having four integral connections between the completed wall and the base 10 the wall. However, additional connecting means may be provided and are illustrated in Fig. 1, although it is to be understood that they are optional in such form. The four strips designated 26 which extend normally from the periphery 11 ofthe base at locations between each pair of hinges 12, provide tongues which may be entered into slots 27 in each of the strips, thereby to provide additional connections where the top edges of the wall meet with the periphery of the base. These optional tongues and slots mayvary in number and location, any increase in number adding, however, to the operations required in assembling the blank to dummy form.
In' addition to-the connections of tongue and slot between adjacent strips 13, it is to be understood that other means of union may be employed, for example, staples. Where-such means is to be employed, the provision of tongue and slot may be omitted. Likewise, the projecting tabs 26, which are optional-in the illustrated form, may be'stapled to the wall, without the provision of receiving slots therefor. The lines of folding of the material at the periphery of the base, being straight and relatively short, need not bescored for folding, because the structure is such that the action to fold results in a properly located folding line. However, tongues and slots, and scored folding lines are preferred in order to dispense with other instrumentalities for forming the dummy.
From the foregoing, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the form illustrated and described. Numerous departures and modifications are contemplated as falling within .thescope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A flat blank of foldable sheet material cutand slotted for folding and uniting to form a cylinder having a closed end suitable for use as a cake dummy, comprising a piece of the blank having cut arcuate edges arranged in broken sequence forming a circle for providing a cylinder base, and a plurality of strip sections each integrally connected at a small section of its side edge to a small section of the periphery of said base between two of said arcuate edges, said connection being'a straight scored foldingline forming a portion of the periphery of said base, the said strip sections in the blank all being of the same width and all extending tangentially to the circular base, the said strips having lengths and being arrangedvfor folding on said scored lines to positions perpendicular to said base and to be curved in overlapping relation to provide a cylindrical wall for said base, the overlapping portions of adjacent strips being provided with interlocking means for joining one strip to the other in making said wall continuous, the inner ends of said strips lying inside the wall in the folded dummy being scored perpendicularly to the-extent of the strip for folding inwardly of the folded cake form and into a generally radial direction as vertical supports for the face of the base when said base is positioned as a top horizontal end wall of the cylinder.
2. A fiat blank, of foldable sheetmaterial cut and slotted for folding and uniting to form a cylinder having a closed end suitable for use as a cake dummy, comprising a piece of the blank having cut arcuate edges arranged in broken sequence forming a circle for providing-a cylinder base, and a plurality of strip sections each integrally connected at a small section of its side edge to a small section of the periphery of said base between two of said arcuate edges, said connection being a straight scored folding line forming a portion of the periphery of said base, the said strip sections in the blank all being 7 of the same width and all extending tangentially to the circular base, the said strips having lengths and being arranged for folding on said scored lines to positions perpendicular to said base and to be curved in overlapping relation to provide a cylindrical wall for said base, the overlapping portions of adjacent strips being provided with interlocking means for joining one strip to the other in making said wall continuous, said interlocking means including a tongue on one strip and a slot in the other, the slot having two closed ends, the inner ends of said strips lying inside the wall in the folded dummy being scored perpendicularly to the extent of the strip for folding inwardly of the folded cake form and into a generally radial direction as vertical supports for the face of the base when said base is positioned as a top horizontal wall of the cylinder.
3. A flat blank of foldable sheet material cut and slotted for folding and uniting to form a cylinder having a closed end suitable for use as a cake dummy, comprising a piece of the blankhaving cut arcuate edges arranged in broken sequence forming a circle for providing a cylinder base, and four strip sections forming a square each integrally connected at a small section of its side edge to a small section of the periphery of said base between two of said arcuate edges, said connection being a straight scored folding line forming a portion of the periphery of said base, the said strip sections in the blank all being of the same width and all extending tangentially to the circular base, the said strips having lengths and being arranged for folding on said scored lines to positions perpendicular to said circular section and to be curved in overlapping relation to provide a cylindrical Wall for said base, the overlapping portions of adjacent strips being provided with interlocking means for joining one strip to the other in making said wall continuous, the inner ends of said strips lying inside the wall in the folded dummy being scored perpendicularly to the extent of the stripfor folding inwardly of the folded cake form and into a generally radial direction as vertical supports for the face of the base when said base is positioned as atop horizontal wall of the cylinder.

A flat blank of foldable sheet material cut and slotted for folding and uniting to form a cylinder having a closed end suitable for use as a cake dummy, comprising a piece of the blank having cut arcuate edges arranged in broken sequence forming a circle for providing a cylinder base, a plurality of strip sections each integrally connected at a small section of its side edge to a small section of the periphery of said base between two of said arcuate edges, said connection being a straight scored folding line forming a portion of the periphery of said base, the said strip sections in the blank all being of the same width and all extending tangentially to the circular base, the said strips having lengths and being arranged for folding on said scored lines to positions perpendicular to said base and to be curved in overlapping relation to provide a cylindrical wall for said base, the overlapping portions of adjacent strips being provided with interlocking means for joining one strip to the other in making said wall continuous, and a plurality of tongues extending normally away from the periphery of said base and being connected to said base by short straight scored folding lines each forming a portion of the periphery of said base between two of said arcuate edges, said strips being foldable through 90, and said strips having slots to receive and hold said tongues in folded position, whereby locally to tie the wall edge to the periphery of the base, the inner ends of said strips lying inside the wall in the folded dummy being scored perpendicularly to the extent of the strip for folding inwardly of the folded cylindrical form and into a generally radial direction to provide vertical support to the inner portions of the circular blank when said blank is positioned as a top horizontal wall of the cylinder.

A flat blank of foldable sheet material cut for folding and uniting to from a cylinder having a closed end suitable for use as a cake dummy, comprising a piece of the blank having cut arcuate edges arranged in broken sequence forming a circle for providing a cylinder base, and a plurality of strip sections each integrally connected at a small section of its side edge to a small section of the periphery of said base between tWo of said arcuate edges, said connection providing a region for a straight folding line which on folding forms a portion of the periphery of said base, the said strip sections in the blank all being of the same width and all extending tangentially to said base, the said strips having lengths and being arranged for folding on said lines to positions perpendicular to said base and to be curved in overlapping relation to provide a cylindrical wall over the periphery of said base, whereby the overlapping portions of adjacent strips may be joined together to make said wall continuous, the inner ends of said strips lying inside the wall in the folded dummy being of suflicient length that upon folding them perpendicularly to the extent of the strip and inwardly of and generally radially to the folded cylindrical form they provide vertical support to the inner portions of the base when said base is positioned as a top horizontal face of the cylinder.
