SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No.` 285,693, dated September 25, 1883.

Be it known that we, MICHAEL SHINABERY and SAMUEL SHINABERY, eitizens ofthe United States of America, residing at Melrose, in the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Spades; and We do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawngs, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which formv a part of this speeification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view.

This invention relates to ditching-spades; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as Will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.

Referring by letter to the acconipanying drawings, a designates the blade of the spade, and b the bearing-flange for the foot, at the top of the blade, which is formed by turning the material down at thispoint. o indicates'the perforated strapsl by which the blade is fastened to the handle, which is of Wood and of any well-known constructiono The blade a is about three-fourths of an inch Wider at the I bottom than at the top, and is turned in at the edges to form Vertical side cutters or blades, d d. These edges are turned in ou a Vertical line, and the lower ends of these cutters,which are ground sharp, are Wider than their upper ends, as shown in the drawings. The side cutters, d d, therefore have their forward cutting-edges inclined rearwardly from bottom toward the top, and are designed to cut earth at the edges of the blade and forward of the same, thereby rendering the removal of the clay or dirt less difficult than where the ordinary spade is used, for the reason that the cuts at the edges partially shape the spadeful and' the strain required to remove it is greatly 'lessened The spade is to be made of good steel, and may be made in the various sizes known to the trade.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved article of manufacture, a ditching-spade having the bearing-flange b at its top edge and the inclined side outters, d d, at its Vertical edges, substantially as specified.
