1 Claim. (Cl. S12- 194) This invention relates to desks particularly intended for use in schools or by students and provides convenient means for storing a typewriter preferably of the portable type and for supporting the typewriter when in use.
Other advantages and desirable features will appear more fully from the following specication taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig, 1 is a front view of a desk embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a partial front View showing a shelf compartment with its door open and the shelf or platform for a typewriter in operative position.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing lthe typewriter shelf in folded retracted position.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a sectional View taken on the line 7--7 of Fig. 5, and
Fig. 8 is a sectional detail showing the supporting carriage for the typewriter shelf.
My improved desk 10 may be provided with the usual tiling or storage drawers 11 and sliding shelves or drawers 12 and 13. The central portion of the desk has a guide- Way 14 for supporting a slidable board or plate 1S which extends partway of the depth of the desk as shown in Fig. 2. A front door 16 is hinged at 17 to the board and extends upwardly at an angle to approximately the top of the opening in the desk, and engages with a stop plate 18 when in closed position. It is held in this position by any suitable catch 19 and is provided with a handle 20 for convenience in raising and lowering the same. The door 16 has a pocket or a receptacle 21 on its inner face for receiving and storing a typewriter as indicated at 22, which will ordinarily be a portable typewriter or one of small size. When the typewriter is not in use, the door may be closed as shown and then when it is to be put in operation, the door is swung down as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the typewriter removed therefrom.
The board or plate 15 has an upwardly extending wall 23 at the rear thereof, thus forming a storage space between the wall and the typewriter receptacle. Access to this place is readily obtained by drawing the board and Patented Oct. 14, 1958 parts associated therewith forwardly as shown. This makes a convenient space for storing stationery or other articles.
The desk has a door 24 at one side to provide access to a shelf compartment 25 formed by a vertical wall or partition 26 as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5?. This space is utilized for holding an adjustable shelf 27 which is secured to a plate 28 hinged to a carriage 29 which has a. plurality of supporting rollers 30 mounted in a channel or -C-shaped guideway 31 secured to a horizontal plate or beam 32 fixed to the inner wall of the desk. The rollers 38 are carried on short stub shafts or bolts 33 extending through holes 34 in the carriage 29 and provided with nuts 35. This provides for a vertical adjustrnent of the carriage with respect to the desk.
When the writing bed or adjustable shelf 27' is not in use, it may be folded downwardly on the hinge and the carriage moved back into the space provided therefor as shown in Fig. 5. When it is to be used for supporting a typewriter, it is drawn forwardly until it is clear of the adjacent walls and swung up to horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4. lt is further supported in this position by engaging with notches 36 in the front edge of the partition 26, the arrangement being such that the writing bed may be raised or lowered to the desired elevations for supporting the typewriter.
From this description, it will be seen that I provide a compact and serviceable desk for the purposes intended which is readily adjustable for different sized users and which provides means for conveniently storing stationary, books, or other articles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A desk, particularly intended for use in schools or by students, having back and side walls andi top enclosing a storage space, a guideway adjacent to the bottom of the storage space, a board slidably mounted on the guideway, a wall extending upwardly from the back of the board, a door hinged to the front of the board and extending upwardly and outwardly toward the top and front of the space, a catch for holding the door in raised position and a receptacle on the back of the door for storing a typewriter, the arrangement being such that the door may be swung downwardly and pulled forwardly to remove the typewriter from the receptacle, the upwardly extending wall defining a storage space at the back of the board.
