UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ooEYnoN WHEAT, OF GENEVA, NEW YORK.
COMBINED VENTILATING AND HEATING'APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,533, dated September 25, 1883.
' Application filed November 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORYDON WHEAT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, county of Ontario, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ventilating and Heating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac: companying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in heating and ventilating apparatus; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of the pipes for the inlet of fresh air and the outlet of the air which has been heated, so that the fresh air shall be obtained from the highest point practicable in connection with the building to be heated, all of which will behereinafter more particularly described, and set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and on which like letters of reference indicate corresponding features, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the combined heating and ventilating apparatus, showing myarrangement of the ventilating and heating pipes; and Fig. 2, a vertical sectional-view of the same.
A represents any form of heater or radiator. I do not confine myself to any particular design or any form of radiator, direct or indirect coils or tubes that will radiate heat,
although I prefer to use the heater represented in the patent numbered 260, 512, of July 4, 1882, which is to some extent represented in the drawings, which is composed of sections B, placed one upon another. The sections are provided with tubes B, which tubes are placed in line with each other. The lower of these sections rests upon the base 0, having registers D at the side thereof, and the upper of said sections is provided with a register D. This register is constructed in a circular form, and surrounds the exit-pipe E for ventilation, which pipe E may go directly out to the air, or may be passed out through a flue prepared for the purpose up through the building, as shown at G.
H is the fresh-air flue or pipe, which may be constructed in the wall, or be carried up through lines ofvpipes to the top of or above the building.
J is a valve in the lower part of air-pipe H.
J is a valve in pipe E, for the exit of the air from the radiator to the pipes G and E for ventilation, as will behereinafter described.
The operation of this apparatus is as follows, viz: When the spaces are filled with steam, thereby producing rarification in the radiator, the valve J and flue H are opened, the bottom. register, D, is closed, and thetop register, D, is opened, and the valve J in pipe E G-is closed. The air is then brought directly from the top of the house, or any high point above the earth, where it is pure, by the pipe H. It is then heated in its passage through the heater and discharged into the room through the register D. The valve J at the bottom of air-pipe H may be closed,
can be taken from the surface of the floor. h h are the steam and drip pipes. When the apparatus is to be used for ventilation, valve J is closed in air-flue H, the register D at bottom is opened and top register, D, is closed, valve J in ventilating flue E G is opened, when the air from the bottom of the room will pass immediately through the radiator out to the open air.
The usefulness of this apparatus for heating and ventilating buildings, hospitals, schools, churches, and other public as well as private buildings will at once be seen, especially where the malarial influences are supposed to occupy the air near the earth. The elevated airpipe H Will take air from a purer and higher stratum of the atmosphere.
